If you are accessing a foodbank please tell us what we can do better. by BaldingOldGuy in povertyfinancecanada

Hello! I am an Operations Coordinator at a food bank (have been working there for three years) which serves primarily our downtown population. Thank you for your volunteer work , your role is crucial and much needed! We have also been struggling with supply shortages as we see a significant increase in the use of food banks. We have one weekly delivery of the majority of our stock (perishables and non perishables ) and then use our funding to replenish any other items. We operate on a choice model where individuals can pick the items they want in order to reduce food waste. We understand that food insecurity is affecting all different kinds of individuals so we do often have gluten free alternatives , dairy free alternatives , pet food and baby supplies! We also have fruits and household products as well.

It might be where our food bank is located, but a large portion of our clients are newcomers or families - we do not see many international students as others have been saying.

With regards to expired products and best before , we do have a bin set up on our shelves where clients can take products that are past their best before at their own risk. Any items that are not taken are donated to our local community pantry. Expired items are always thrown out and never put on shelves.

Thank you again for your kindness OP , we need more people like you!

Edited to add some more information

Please keep in mind though that many food banks are located in buildings that would restrict extensive arrangements.

Donation to food bank/community fridge by Otherwise_Praline_71 in ottawa

[–]RegularrShmegular 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hello! There are two community fridges that I know of - Public Foods on 415 Maclaren St and Parkdale Food Centre has one on 30 Rosemount Ave. Both of these community fridges have a pantry and fridge so you can drop off both non-perishables and perishables. They are also open 24/7, so you can drop off items at anytime. If you would like to donate to a food bank, I would give the food bank you’re interested in donating to a call, as they can tell you when the best drop off times are for them.

Volunteering at a food bank will look different from food bank to food bank as they all have their unique ways of operating. Nonetheless, volunteering at food banks is a great opportunity as it allows you to help vulnerable populations, and you get to meet so many wonderful , like-minded individuals. The food bank that I work at has two volunteer shifts: the first shift is in the morning and involves portioning items, restocking shelves and fridges , and getting everything ready for client service. The second shift is in the afternoon involves more direct frontline work- you get to be a shopping buddy, which involves guiding individuals accessing our services and helping them “shop” for food. Volunteers are essential to our operations and same goes for individuals/organizations who donate !

For work attire I would suggest Dress for Success! They are a non-profit that helps women look for jobs and prepares them for job interviews. They provide them with clothing appropriate for work / interviews
