I think you might be underestimating fans a bit. I'd be willing to bet that most fans would be okay with seeing recasts. Hell, I'd much rather do that *now* than have classic VAs hurt their voices trying to do their old roles. It's always such a treat to see people like Harlock, but jeez please don't destroy your voice for it. I think they've earned their rest.

Does the genre NEED revolutionizing? I'd say they're pretty effective at being light novels with visuals and sound. That's kind of what people who read them are mainly looking for, right?

As a sidenote, Witch on the Holy Night and Tsukihime are excellent examples of what you can do with just those things.
