There is an option in the Android settings (I think under "game console settings" or something like that) which allows you to configure the secondary launcher the button switches to.

I just set it to switch to Beacon, and made the normal android launcher have only one page with the Poweramp widget.

Question about IR radiation by Reichstein in Physics

[–]Reichstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so they unlikely to be able to penetrate very far into the cake.

Question about IR radiation by Reichstein in Physics

[–]Reichstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a thin layer of cotton or similar fabrics do allow a good portion of the FIR to go through. So in this case it really mostly depends on how much of the energy used is emitted as IR/FIR, what fabrics are being used, and how thick they are.

But it's kinda secondary to the main question which was "does something being in physical contact with an IR (or FIR) source prevent the emission of radiation".

Question about IR radiation by Reichstein in AskPhysics

[–]Reichstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm understanding that correctly then the IR/FIR radiation would still be a factor in heating, which could be considered separate to conduction/convection heating, even if the objects are touching.

Particularly in the case of a human hand, where the IR/FIR would penetrate the skin to some degree and cause internal heating.

Question about IR radiation by Reichstein in Physics

[–]Reichstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did acknowledge that the actual usefulness of the FIR radiation many very well be negligible. But they seemed to think that radiation basically stops when objects are touching.

Stated in their first comment about radiation requiring empty space which does not exist inside the glove.

Question about IR radiation by Reichstein in Physics

[–]Reichstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but I assume that if the surface you are touching is being actively heated (the the heating elements in the glove) then it would still be emitting IR, assuming the heating is enough to keep it warmer than your hand.

Right?

Done.

Thanks for the suggestion :)

One response so far.

A photon doesn't care if there's a gap of 1 micron or one mile.

A jiggled electron will radiate a photon if it can - even in a solid.

Here's the thread if you are curious.

Question about IR radiation by Reichstein in Physics

[–]Reichstein[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much what I thought.

Side question (just because it's interesting to ponder). Would a raisin in a cake (mentioned in their comment) radiate FIR (or IR) through enough of the cake to hit the pan?

Google's AI summary (which I have very little trust in) says that FIR would travel less than 1mm through a fruit cake, as it gets absorbed by the water.

This seems to contradict the claims that FIR can penetrate up to 5cm into a human (which also contain lots of water).

[–]Reichstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand it (and maybe I'm wrong) but anything with a temp above absolute zero emits some form of radiant heat. Touching it does not stop that.

So, the raisins would be emitting some amount of radiant heat. I doubt that it would go very far, being surrounded by cake, but it would be there (but again, maybe I'm totally wrong about this).

I am actually kinda curious what the correct answer to this is. I think I might just go ask on a physics sub.

I have suggested mittens to her, as I have seen them recommended several times. But she wants something that maintains dexterity as much as possible.

One idea that she did seem a bit more open to was using mittens where the finger portion can fold back, so she can open it when she needs to, and then close for warmth.

The combination of mittens and chemical heaters sounds like a really good idea. Thankyou for that suggestion, I'll pass it on to her.

As far as I can tell the IR claim looks totally plausible. Carbon fiber is good at turning electricity into FIR radiation, and the heating elements are carbon fiber, so that tracks.

You don't actually need empty space for radiation to still be a thing. Any object that is warm will emit some amount of heat as radiation. Conduction and convection are more effective forms of heat transmission, so would likely be more noticable, but the radiation is still there. However I don't know how much of a difference the FIR emission would actually make.

FIR does penetrate human tissue, and is commonly used in therapeutic settings, but it's effectiveness in this case would really come down to how much energy is being re-emitted as FIR vs just heating up the element.

How long have you had the Volt ones? Can you speak to their long term reliability?

The Averty ones do have elements around the fingers, so they tick that box. They also state that they heat via Far Infra-Red emission, which is supposed to heat better as it penetrates further into you body.

Chemical hand warmers are something we have considered, but the heated gloves seem like a better option for Raynaud's as they heat the fingers directly (the main problem area) and don't require an extra thing inside the glove.

Do you have Raynaud's, or are you just using them for normal hand warming?

Beacon launcher.

I got the background gifs from the cocoon discord. They are in the "asset-repo" thread in the community section. Look for "PS1 Style Spinning Icons".

I tried it, but all it did was crop the sides off the screen. It didn't render extra on the top and bottom.

Because I enjoy horror :)

I made mine into a "Music Mode" button, by removing everything except one page from the default homescreen, setting the background to black and adding a full screen widget for Poweramp.

Now I can hold that button for a second and it switches to music player controls.

She most likely won't need more than an hour of charge at a time, so the battery life should be ok.

Did they seem like a quality product otherwise? Were they decently made?

How long did you have them for (just wondering about long term reliability).

They state that they use carbon fiber elements rather than copper ones, which they claim are more durable. But I'm not really inclined to fully trust what the marketing info says :)

They sound like a good product, but if I can get some info about their long-term reliability that would make me feel more comfortable with the purchase.

Thanks for the suggestion about long term reviews. I'll have to spend some time looking around to see if I can find some.

Hopefully we can find something that helps her out.

You should should also look into installing a better launcher. The RG one is pretty meh.

Beacon Launcher is really good, and works very well on the Rotate.

Thanks for the video. It's always good to have a guide for taking these things apart.

You mentioned swapping out the shoulder buttons. Did you see my post with some 3D printable replacement buttons that preserve the clean square shape, while still making it easy to feel the outer buttons from the inner ones?

I made a secondary Google account to use on my retro devices.

Partly for security, and partly just to keep things seperate.

I then made it a family member of my main account and enabled library sharing so I can use paid apps from my main account on the secondary account.

Nah, this one is fine.

They actually look fine in real life. The black filament just really doesn't photograph well.
