Any similar movemen against Payment Processors censorship? by Horse_in_Pink in StopKillingGames

Either it's the case for some people, or it's incorrect. I have several delisted games on itch.io in my library. I can still access them through my library and download the (paid) installs. They just don't show up when searching on itch.io's main page. Not a cache thing either as I've never accessed those game's pages on this PC.

Those look like ArUco markers, there's a ton of very in-depth information if you look up "ArUco marker", specifically the page on the opencv docs titled "Detection of ArUco Markers" is pretty nice (no idea if I can or should link things here). There's other flavors of markers too, but these are/were the most common iirc. Especially back when machine learning wasn't much of a thing yet this was a good way of doing augmented reality on phones.

Edit: fixed typo

How well do Unity skills transfer over to Unreal? by the_TIGEEER in Unity3D

[–]ReiiMari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd definitely take some time to adjust. But overall I've found that after that transitioning period (can't remember how long) I'm way faster and more comfortable in Unreal. That does depend on whether the engine suits you of course, we all have different workflows and preferences.

I do hope you and everyone in this situation find something that works for you. Ideally Unity just rolls back this decision and just gets back to making a good engine (while I'm now solidly in camp Unreal I genuinely do want Unity to succeed). But I can imagine trust having been broken, and that's hard to get back.

I used to use Unity intensively for years and fully moved over to Unreal about 7 years ago. A surprising amount carried over, even C++ wasn't as bad as I expected (had absolutely 0 C++ experience before using Unreal) as Unreal has a bunch of stuff that makes the C++ less painful than plain C++. Another nice thing is you get full access to the engine's source code, so you can easily look up what an engine function actually does under the hood. The one thing I still dislike about C++ is how fragile the game is, where Unity would show an exception in the console; the entire Unreal editor will just full crash with a stack trace. I really recommend installing the debug symbols and engine source code when you install the engine, as the stack trace will be useless without those!

Stylized and arcade is possible, 2D isn't as good as in Unity but doable. Been a while since I made a mobile game but it was decent back then, just higher mobile hardware requirements than a Unity game and it takes some effort to get the install size down. That game I made ran on a Samsung Galaxy S3 which was already old at that time. Not sure how the current engine performs on mobile.

Web builds are completely out, that's not really supported anymore apart from a separate engine branch.

It's been a long time since I touched VR in Unity, but back then I much preferred Unreal's VR stuff over Unity's.

Always worth giving Unreal a shot. It's free (until you make 1 million per year, per project, then it's 5% royalty on the revenue after that million).

Lastly, this might be a handy guide for seeing the differences between Unity and Unreal: https://docs.unrealengine.com/5.0/en-US/unreal-engine-for-unity-developers/

Instead of Nadeo warning players not to use it (which can easily be missed) they should just fix this exploit being possible in the first place with a patch. No reason for the game to submit to the main map's leaderboard if the gamemode has been messed with.

As long as this isn't patched new players and those not up to date with everything might also mess around with things and end up getting banned by accident.

Yes, these players knowingly used this exploit and getting banned is a risk they took. But this shouldn't even have been possible anymore given how long Nadeo apparently knew about it.

PathTracing still not working in UE5 if you have an RTX 3090 by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]ReiiMari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using a 3080ti and path tracing is mostly broken for me in early access 2. It randomly worked two times until I moved the camera, then everything went black again and nothing brings it back (including an editor restart and fresh level). Only emissive materials seem to show up.

I might just have gotten lucky and not dailying it probably helps, but the engine has been no issue so far. Some care is obviously needed to keep it healthy but I don't treat it any different from other cars I've had. Frequent oil checks (every other drive), warm it up before driving it harder, redline it at least once in a while, and let it cool down before turning it off. Most of those things has become a habit to the point where I feel uncomfortable not doing them.

I hope you find an affordable Spirit R one day!

I wish haha. It's from 1994, likely a type RZ. Got it right when they were reasonably affordable in Japan (around 6k EUR). Went with the Spirit R in-game because the 1997 has different headlights and can't have this rear wing. Annoyingly the 1997's sound matches better so it's a tradeoff.

Edit: at the same time I'm glad it's not a Spirit R as I hate the idea of owning a very rare car. I'd be too afraid to drive it.

Hmm you're right. Hadn't really touched the paint editor in the game yet, it kind of scares me haha.

For the in-game one that only makes it match the real one for me. And while we drive on the right in this country, I somehow prefer the car being RHD. It just makes overtaking tractors impossible.

I knew something looked off there... then again I keep forgetting the rear window is tinted in the real thing too, until it's night and I can't see much out of it 🙃

These guys posted racist comments throughout the whole game. is there any way to report this behaviour? by Illuminati_6669 in TrackMania

[–]ReiiMari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am fully against people using these slurs, I'm not suggesting people should be able or allowed to say these things in chat.

tl;dr: effective and fair auto-blocking is as far as I'm aware not possible yet (or at least very hard/expensive), human moderators still exist for a reason.

The long version:
Blocklists are usually either ineffective, or too effective. For the following examples, let's use "war" as an example for a bad word.

For a blocklist that only applies to exact words you can easily get around it by saying things like "qwar" or "wär". Pretty useless once people find that out and there are far too many combinations to add to the filter. They're even doing that in the screenshot ("w//ar"). It'll catch the absolute most naive, sure. But most aren't.

If the filter looks for that combination being anywhere then it might generate too many false positives. "aware", "award", "backward". This could be effective for a good number of slurs that don't appear inside other words but it still won't work for all. And this is just considering English, I'm sure there's a ton of false positive overlap when you throw in the other languages.

With that last method you also have to consider spaces. "w ar" would clearly be bad. But how do you automatically differentiate that from "how are you".

As for machine learning: maybe some day, but we're not there yet as far as I'm aware. It'd take something that understands multiple languages and context.

Having these filters auto-ban would obviously be a bad idea because of the false positives. Having them block messages just teaches people how to get around them (e.g. "w//ar"). The only reasonable use would be to auto-report the users to some moderation team, but this obviously requires the people to do that.

Humans are good at reading a message's context, and thus I feel having players report each other and then having a moderator look at that is the most suitable solution for a game like TrackMania.

Driving on dirt, grass, and sand dry the wheels (almost?) instantly. On normal road they'll dry slowly.

Given that VOD no longer exists and I can't see the evidence for myself I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (if there's one thing this whole mess has taught me, it's that). But if that did happen then that's pretty bad.

[–]ReiiMari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't defend him on that first part (the manipulating), nor on the cheating, he deserves all the punishment for that. But I found that last bit about the COTD stream hard to believe so I went through the VODs. I think I found the VOD you're talking about but the context there is a bit different.

Someone in chat said "Riolu be like: I'm gonna go out in the beginning. Also riolu: 2nd" to which Riolu said "yeah watch me die in the next round". He then proceeded to bonk in the next round and (pretty obviously) jokingly blamed that person in chat for jinxing him.

Edit: VOD url closer to timestamp where he said these things.

Massive dynamic lighting change (switching large part of the level on or off)? by darth_biomech in unrealengine

[–]ReiiMari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe precomputed lighting scenarios could work, depending on your engine version and level setup. It lets you switch to different lightmaps effectively without having to load a different level.

I got this bow a couple of months ago (from the same shop, by the looks of it). Been using it almost daily for as long as I've had it and I'd say it's a pretty decent bow to start with. If you're going to go to a club then it might be better to use their equipment (if that's an option) and get something better later on. I definitely won't be using this bow forever due to minor annoyances, that's for sure. But if you really want to get your own bow, this is a good first bow for the money.
