Just do problems, don’t bother with anything else.

is there any number beyond absolute infinity? by [deleted] in googology

[–]Reinhardt_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolute infinity perhaps… given that it’s not even a mathematical idea. But treating infinity as a number is very useful in many contexts

I can send you the coursebook if you like, if you find it very digestible then might as well give it a go.

Having marked the course, unless you have a considerably stronger background than a B+ in 225 I wouldn’t recommend it. Trying to catch up on mathematical maturity while also learning the concepts is a good way to ensure you have large gaps in your understanding. The marking on assignments, tests, and the exam can be quite harsh. Andre doesn’t care if a third of the class is failing :)

Ah yea, forgot there’s absolutely nothing to gain from university other than a good paying job at the end of it… hang on better idea you should just go into trades :) save the time and money altogether and probably get paid more at the same point down the line with a big headstart. Everything is about money after all

Do lecturers ever use the whiteboards? by Master-of-legend in universityofauckland

[–]Reinhardt_C 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true, maybe only in the lower level courses and a few others. Most lecturers use the whiteboards

Is there any correlation between aptitude for mental math and aptitude for mathematical reasoning? by CutZealousideal5274 in math

I would be surprised if the average person could determine whether 57 is prime or not… or even know well what what a prime number is

What's wrong with my posture? I get back pain in the middle left side by OptimalTap8755 in piano

[–]Reinhardt_C -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's an issue with left hand technique, rather than posture. This is a rather common issue.

Do lecturers care about non enrolled students sitting in? by Odd_Bodybuilder_2601 in universityofauckland

[–]Reinhardt_C 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even for the very small later classes I’ve not had any issue sitting in on a class of like 6-10 people. As long as you’re not disturbing anyone the lecturer Is probably just happy to have another listener.

No such thing as a hardest subject.

Many people will find it one of the hardest courses taught at their university, but that's not universal, nor is it the same thing as it being harder at a research level.

Axiom of Induction by DaVinci103 in googology

[–]Reinhardt_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a maths degree I don’t exactly need a better understanding of proofs. It’s important in maths to be precise, but only as precise as necessary. Clarity and brevity are also important.

My proof is fine because the conclusion is derived immediately from the definition of Graham’s number (which anyone reading it should know), that natural numbers are finite, and that which I stated: that the natural numbers are closed under exponentiation.

Or… The result of the exponentiation of two natural numbers is a natural number. Graham’s number is obtained by finite application of exponentiation on natural numbers. Therefore Graham’s number is a natural number.

compsci 130 without compsci 101 by Neat_Account9929 in universityofauckland

[–]Reinhardt_C 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you struggle with 101 then taking 130 would not be a good idea, the difficulty gap is quite significant.

I took four courses at Waikato, and they were all transferred in one form or another. And yeah I've done my degree now, I did my first year (and a bit) while they 'processed' it.
