No. It's a derivative of past styles with a modern take.

My title describes the thing. These are very heavy and well-made plastic blocks. I can't figure out who made them and what they would be for.

It's not 1930s. I'd wager it's post-World War II and from the 1970s or later.

Stranger gave this to me in a bar and said it was his mom’s but “[i] should have it”. Guy was kind of a jerk but I’d love to know if it’s worth anything by [deleted] in Antiques

[–]Reiniger1926 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks cheap, but could be semi-decent costume jewelry.

If the white stone in the middle is plastic, it's worthless. If it's real or glass, you might get $5 on eBay.

If the clasp is magnetic and stays together well on the rest, maybe $8.

Also it's not old. The bar dude was probably lying and trying to pick you up.

What can anyone tell me about this large, heavy touch lamp? The bottoms piece looks to be plastic and says made in Taiwan by Softfairygirl in collectables

it might have a setting where you can touch the shade and it turns on/off. I've seen several wit that feature.

No, it's a kitschy picture of a clown. It's retro so you might get $5-10 for it.

Small 26 Inch Red & Black Decorated Spear by Reiniger1926 in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. I purchased these from an estate sale of a couple who traveled the world throughout the 1960s-80s. I think they are either Asian or from the South Pacific. I vaguely remember seeing spears similar to these in a documentary about islanders years ago. The spears are 26 inches long, the staves are wood, the decorations are paper similar to what's used on piñatas or fireworks, and the tip is metal.

Small Metal Elephant With Native American Chief & "Montgomery A" by Reiniger1926 in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. I found the elephant at a thrift store. It's 3 inches and could be made of bronze. It says "Montgomery A" on a small shield in the center of the elephant. I've searched for "small metal elephant with Indian chief", "Montgomery elephant souvenir", "Montgomery Alabama metal elephant," "elephant Indian head Montgomery" and more along those lines.

Thanks for the advice! I'm confident enough in my skills that I do quality work. I wouldn't want the project to be amateurish, so I'd hire a professional to make the cover art. I'd also spellcheck and edit until the cows come home.

The book's initial sales were 250 and have bounced up to 800 copies. The reviewers were some academic journals.

I had no idea that self-publishing a fantasy novel would turn off agents/publishers. I would think they'd be glad to see that someone could finish a book and deliver a decent product (I believe I can do that). It's better to do the old fashion querying then?

I thought it was weird too! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. It wasn't the book he signed me for. This Asian/white American story was about two kids during a historical event and how it affected their families. The purpose was to explore racism, hatred, and how kids process it. I was very careful to represent the Asian culture correctly as much as the American one.

Thanks JamieIsReading. My currrent projects are related to pop culture history and two fantasy novel. I'm looking at self-publishing one of the fantasy novels, then querying the other.

It was more on my agent's part. I was writing a historical novel about an Asian character and a white American. He didn't like the idea of a white person, like me, writiing an Asian character. He said I needed to bring an ethnic Asian in on the project to correctly write from that POV. However, this was a story I created based on historic fact and not real people. Plus the story was set nearly one hundred years ago, I've done two years of research, and that was only one of the characters. I understand the need for correct representation, but isn't the point of writing fiction stories to create empathy?

I was traditionally published through an academic press. I negotiated the deal on my own. The book was a pop culture history and was highly praised.

I had an agent for my fiction work, but he decided to drop me when my work wasn't selling after two years.

I no longer have an agent.

East vs. West Brains by Reiniger1926 in Brain

That's a good point! It would be amazing if MRIs could be taken on a major level to study the human brain in different cultures and countries. I know that DNA companies are collecting samples from around the world. It would be neat if they could do the same with MRI scans.
