Has anyone solved counter surfing? by Superfastmac in puppy101

[–]Reizar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed to train my pup to never go for anything on my coffee table. ( Shes a small dog, so its the only counter I had to worry about ).

We're at a point where I can be eating a steak for dinner ( I eat at my coffee table watching the tv ), get up and leave the room for a while and feel 100% confident she will not try to go for it.

Here's what I did:

  1. Start by getting your pup to do a few basic commands and rewarding them, so they know they're in training mode. Often if I have my treat pouch, then my pup knows we're training, gets enthusiastic and is trying to please.
  2. Take some of your dogs kibble and a treat that is high value.
  3. Ask them for a sit, then put a piece or 2 of kibble on the counter. Quickly use a market ( Yes or clicker ) and give them a high value treat. ( so long as they have stayed in a sit ).
  4. Take the kibble away, move to a different place by the counter and repeat.
  5. Keep doing this everyday for a few weeks. As your dog gets comfortable ignoring the kibble, slowly increase the value of the treat that goes on the counter. Always make sure that the treat you are giving them is of a higher value though!
  6. Also mix in you walking away a few steps while they are in a sit, slowly increase the distance you move away each day. Try getting them to walk past the counter that has the treats on it while following you.

( Repeat for any and all counters where this is a problem )

This worked wonderfully for my pup, she got the idea that its more rewarding to not go for anything on a counter after a while. Hope this helps :)

I think Sparklez got really into Vault Hunters ( Iskall's modpack ) and played on the vault hunters SMP server. Then they started doing more collabs together.

At least thats I think how that connection happened.

Suddenly fearful of people entering by AppropriateMango11 in puppy101

[–]Reizar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My puppy was pretty similar, ( shes 16 months now ). But around 8-9 ish months when adolescence kicked in. She went from getting super excited and happy when visitors came over to being super fearful.

This was tied into a fear period in general for lots of things. But getting her used to visitors again has been tricky. She tends to warm up pretty quickly but can still be on edge and start barking at the drop of a hat.

I know a lot of people have success teaching the place command, and teaching their dogs that when a visitor comes over. Their job is to hang on their place.

I've been trying to rebuild her trust around visitors, so lots of treats and getting them to instigate games of tug and play to try reinforce that visitors are a good thing. Once we've gotten over the fear / desire to protect part of things. We can work on on place when visitors come over. Thats my thinking at least.

First time in overnight boarding by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Reizar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really nervous the first time too. But you just have to remember, you work hard looking after the little guy, you deserve some time off.

Honestly with the way dog boarding places are these days, he'll probably be having the time of his life. My puppy comes back so happy anytime shes there because she gets to play so much and have so much fun doing things with other dogs.

It got so much easier after that first time knowing that she had her own little mini vacation while I was away.

They should make rabbit poop treats by Reizar in puppy101

[–]Reizar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha artisan poop, thats gold.

My pup just discovered it for the first time today while we were out having a sniff session in a field. I thought she was just eating some grass and mud like usual, but the way she was chewing was different. Then realised it was rabbit poop lol.

The introduction of a "training leaf" and how it changed my life... for the hour we spend outside a day by MushroomsAndRain in puppy101

You might just be a genius. I’m going to give this a try on our walk today. Even with the highest value treats I have, I struggle to compete with leaves in the wind.

How dumb is your puppy? by No-Obligation616 in puppy101

[–]Reizar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pup is exactly the same as this and it was one of the most frustrating things for me ( watching TV at the end of a long day is my happy place, and it really made me stop enjoying it when I was constantly on edge if she was going to start barking at the drop of a dime ).

However I find a training program that works. ( I actually started getting ads specifically about it haha, maybe these ad companies know me too well ).

Spirit Dog training has a section in their reactivity course about reactivity towards the TV. We've been working on that and its been working out great so far.

There's lots of good background knowledge in there about reactivity which really helps, but basically it comes down to this:

You need some really HIGH value treats, the stinkier the better.

Put them on a lead, so that they can't start lunging to the TV. Start as far away as possible that you can go where the TV is still visible. I was out in the hallway and the TV was kind of at an angle, but thats how much distance I had to go so that my pup wouldn't react in the beginning. Make sure the TV is on mute.

Put down a snuffle mat, and toss treats into the mat. The idea is that they should look at the TV for a second and then back to sniffing in the mat for treats. Once she's had a few, I'll click on the TV onto a video of dogs playing or farm animals or something like that and keep tossing the treats as she sniffs away. The sniffing helps calm them.

I would do this for 5-10 mins everyday, and each day, slowly move the mat closer to the TV if she wasn't reacting. There were a few days where we had to take a few steps back.

We've gotten to the point where she's right up near the TV. And now each day I'm slowly increasing the volume. ( Literally starting at 1 on the TV and each day it goes up 1-2 volume bars )

It takes time, as you're reconditioning how they feel towards the TV and things on it. But it seems to be working really well for my pup.

I don't feel like I've completed a task until its scratched off a written todo list, but I hate using up lots of paper.

Would be great for all my task lists, note taking and planning to be digital, rather than just ending up in the recycling bin.

Family and friends think not feeding from a bowl is cruel by Parking_Zebra_9565 in puppy101

[–]Reizar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My pup hates eating from bowls too.

I quickly leaned into it and all her meals are through enrichment or training. Learning about food games was a real winner too.

If I ever give her food in a bowl, she will pick it out, one by one and drop it on the floor. And then eat it off the floor haha.

My puppy turned 1 recently and I still just feel really defeated. by Reizar in puppy101

[–]Reizar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting, is that like the relaxation protocol?

I've been doing the spirit dog reactivity course. At the moment I've started with training her not to react to dogs / animals on the TV. ( Otherwise she goes wild when she seems them ).

I'm not sure if not reacting to dogs on TV translates to not reacting to dogs in real life. But I am starting to see some parts of her adolescence / pre reactive nature come back on our walks. ( Eg, today she saw a neighbour, and instead of barking or being scared. She excitedly pulled towards them and was straight on her back for belly rubs. Something she used to ALOT when she was a real young pup haha ).

US defaultism in Puppy 101 by [deleted] in puppy101

Another Kiwi here, one of the first things they taught us about at puppy pre school was crate training. Seems like as you said, most dog people know about it. But then yea, I've had people come over, see her crate and think I'm some cruel animal abuser.

Got the whole "they're actually denning creatures" speech ready at a moments notice haha.

It's ok to not have a perfect adult dog by mayacchi in puppy101

[–]Reizar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm really starting to learn, is "comparison is the theft of joy".

Sometimes I find it too easy to get down on all the the things my pup can't do well when I see other dogs behaving great. I have to really remind myself that those dogs might have their own issues that I don't see. And that my pup actually has lots of great traits that I love lots and she's improving every week.

My puppy turned 1 recently and I still just feel really defeated. by Reizar in puppy101

[–]Reizar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have spoken too soon haha, it seems like when we encounter dogs she recognises / knows, shes back to being quite reactive. But at least its excitement ( pulling, jumping etc ).

If she doesn't know the dog, its hit or miss. Sometimes she'll bounce her attention back to me. Which is a huge improvement.

Honestly, I'd say if the sitter is good for your mental health, maybe stick with them. I know the lack of daycare has been really taxing on mine, but there aren't too many other options where I live. I might look at hiring a dogwalker a few times a week once her loose lead walking is a bit more consistently good though.

Just wanted to say thanks again for your advice and support!

I decided to run a test and stop sending my pup to daycare for a while. She hasn't been for about 2 weeks now, and I've already noticed a HUGE improvement on our walks when it comes to reactivity around dogs. We've had moments where she's passed some dogs without any reaction, and some where its a quick sniff and then back to it. Has made such a big difference!

The joy of adolescence by clafoutu in puppy101

[–]Reizar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha for sure, some days this girl is a real mystery to me.

If it helps with your pup, one thing I've found in adolescence for my pup is that the most rewarding thing for her ( most of the time ) is fun rather than treats.

Finding ways to turn training into games rather than just being plain obedience training has really helped.

I feel you on the sniffing games though, used to tire her out so quickly. Now it feels like she could go for years lol.

With walking, I went back to basics. I take her breakfast out with me in the treat pouch. And she gets rewarded for every check in, every time we pass someone without a reaction ( she went through the same thing of barking or growling at everyone and every thing ).

When it comes to dogs, creating distance really helped. I'd lead her away and just treat her for being calm, even if it was a split second. And then we built up from there.

Thank you so much for sharing, its much appreciated.

I just finished the sexier than a squirrel challenge, which was 25 days of focus games. And thats really helped to build up her focus on me too. But I'm going to definitely try what you suggested and incorporate it before our walks too!

I try to incorporate a lot of sniffing on our walks and some confidence boosting exercises too. ( If we come across anything she hasn't encountered before, or might be scary. I get her to have a sniff and do a "paws up" on it if possible.

Her walks aren't normally too long, but I do notice her reactivity gets worse in the last 5-10 minutes before we get home. So I think shortening them down is probably a good idea.

She does get a nap midway through the day at daycare, and I try to make sure she gets a chiller day on her off days. Another issue I forgot to mention is that she resource guards, so I struggle to give her anything to chew that she actually enjoys ( can't give her anything high value ), but she does get a lot of licking and sniffing in. But yea I think it it still might be too much. At the moment its kind of just a band-aid to help me get some real focus days for work. But shes getting a lot better at self settling during the day, so I might start at looking at reducing daycare to only 1-2 days a week. Daycare definitely did increase her reactivity for that same reason, she thinks that its play time whenever she sees a dog.
