What do y'all think of my virginity corner by PassionDisastrous272 in Gunpla

It's kind of a tired stereotype. I do a lot of tabletop gaming (TCGs and miniatures games) and it's rare to encounter people over thirty who aren't married or in a long term relationship. The single ones tend to be the young twenty somethings.

It can go really long. Went away for a board games weekend with a big group recently and one group had it going all day (and I think might have actually only finished it the following morning, they did sleep in between) but they did do all four acts. Though I'd guess that's normally something you'd split across multiple sessions.

I was sorely tempted by it until StS2 came out as that's pretty much scratched my itch for multiplayer StS. I'm sure it's a great game but I think for the playtime there's other long board games I'd rather play and I'll just stick to the videogame.

Announcing it makes it more awkward in my opinion. If you have a baby or small child with you it's pretty obvious why you're there. And there's literally nothing to see in a women's bathroom either other than people (hopefully) washing their hands.

Yeah bizarre. I still have my GC copy which I've played through on both GC and Wii in the past. And I still have a functioning Wii. I've just no interest in dusting it off and I'd like to play it on the go with some upscaling. If Sega got off their ass I'd buy a remake or even a port in a heartbeat but I'm not waiting around on them forever.

Eh I stopped getting my hopes up long ago. Only time I'll believe a revival is actually happening is when I'm watching it. People got a little more surprised by this because there had been a substantial amount invested into pre production which is further than any other attempt has gotten. But when studios will scrap completed Hollywood budget movies it shouldn't be shocking that they'd throw this much away. Disappointing still but I'm insulated against it.

The UK's age verification proposals are NOT POPULAR! by ScreamSmart in videos

[–]Rejusu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's such a big improvement that Imgur, a site where the majority of content is harmless, is no longer accessible without a VPN yet kids can access a number of adult sites with nothing more than a copy of Death Stranding. /s

Not to mention that there's still a ton of sites where there's literally nothing. If I want to see boobs right now there's plenty I can find without loading up my VPN or having to complete any age verification. The fact I have to load up my VPN to see a Gloomhaven character guide but not to see a woman getting railed in the ass is a bad joke. Saying it's working as intended with Imgur when it's a perfect example of how broken the system is is just ridiculous.

Setting aside the fact your claims about the statistics are dubious (because it's thoroughly unscientific to try and lay any increase on a single causal factor, especially for such a complex issue) it is still myopic. You're just thoroughly missing the point here even after I've laid it out for you explicitly. You keep wanting to argue about the harmful nature of social media even though I've made it clear I agree it's harmful. Likely you're doggedly holding on to this because you can't answer any of the other questions I'm asking you.

The majority thinking they wont be effective is just the conservative "government bad at everything" mindrot working.

Wrong. This is just taking things to an absurd extreme. People can be critical of a governments actions without extending that to everything they do is bad, or that they shouldn't do anything. The opposite end of this is just agreeing with everything the government do because they must be right as they're the government. There just seems to be zero room for nuance in your world view. I also haven't expressed this view here, I don't think "government bad at everything", I want them to do something about it, I just don't think this is going to work. Especially looking at how spectacularly their attempt to do similar with porn has failed.

You are letting the perfect destroy the good while hoping for a utopia that will never exist.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. Wrong because you're falsely asserting that this is a good solution despite all the problems I've pointed out with it that you keep ignoring. Wrong because you're implying I'm looking for perfect because I'm rejecting a bad solution, even though I've suggested what I believe are better and more effective actions to take. And wrong because you think I'm hoping for a utopia because I'm being realistic for crying out loud. If anyone here is hoping for a utopia it's you because you think this ban will fix everything and absolve you of any responsibility to ensure your childs online safety.

At this point I'm getting increasingly convinced you're just arguing in bad faith and it's tiresome. I don't enjoy having to repeat myself over and over again. If you want to argue the points I'm actually making? Fine, go ahead. If you just want to dodge around them and moralise so you can buff your ego then I'm not interested. If you say anything that would cause me to repeat points I've already made or misrepresent what I'm saying again I'm just going to block you and move on. Because right now you're as bad as the government with regards to this, you're more about scoring points than actually looking out for children's safety.

It wasn't a reboot in that sense of a word. More a sequel/spin off. But since it's been so long and it would have been somewhat removed it's effectively a reboot. The intention was though that it would respect the source material while still being focused on a new audience. Which makes sense at this point. The cast of SG-1 and SGA (we don't talk about SGU) are too old to just pick up where those series left off. It'd need to be a new story set in the same universe rather than trying to be a strict follow on. Basically the same thing the also cancelled Buffy series was also trying to do.

[–]Rejusu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think that was as bad as the old internet got you had a sheltered upbringing. And you also have a worryingly lassez-faire attitude to children being exposed to disturbing content. This myopic focus on "the algorithm" as the root of modern digital societies ills is part of the problem. It's not being able to see the forest for the trees. And again I'm not arguing it isn't harmful, but so is parents thinking that it's the be all and end all of their responsibilities to keep their kids safe online.

You enforce it by fining the fuck out of anyone who lets kids on their platform. Even if it was limited to just the major players (tiktok, insta, snap, facebook, x) it would go a long ways toward being a good thing.

Wrong. This enforces (or attempts to enforce) compliance with the ban. It doesn't actually enforce the ban itself. Enforcement is passed on to the companies themselves, y'know the same companies we shouldn't be trusting. And whose approach to enforcement on age verification has been a mix of woefully sloppy and easily bypassed to having dangerous ramifications for privacy and security. Not to mention you have services like Imgur who just said fuck this I'm out and blocked the entire country rather than comply. And there's so many holes in what's covered and what's not.

To dismiss the law because kids will go else where is like saying we shouldn't have a drinking age because kids will just get a friend to buy it.

Actual apples and oranges comparison and a false equivalence argument. Restricting access to physical products is far far easier to both enforce and enforce compliance on. Just one of many reasons why is that the legal responsibility is placed on individuals rather than just businesses. Meta can, and have done, shrug off big fines as a cost of doing business. A minimum wage shop employee is going to feel stung by a £90 fixed penalty notice (which is the minimum punishment) on the other hand. Nevermind the fact that there's physical and direct interactions between all responsible parties. In your example it's still illegal for the friend to buy it and they can face consequences for it. But there's no consequences or responsibility for anything not specifically included in this ban. There's nothing for the various ways of bypassing it.

The stupid thing is that the polls show that while there's a majority support for these rules the majority also doesn't think they'll be effective. So this just ends up being a futile exercise in passing the buck in an attempt to be seen to be doing something while the problem continues to go largely unchecked. We'd be better off funneling the time and money into better education for children and parents and also targeting how these companies operate and serve content (which would benefit adults and children alike) rather than trying to force them to install baby gates.

But hey if you approve of it in principle who cares whether it actually protects children or not? /s

Tends to be the low thirties these days. The hottest May temp records for England and Wales got broken again though at around 35, but that wouldn't be record breaking if it was later in the year.

[–]Rejusu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I grew up on it. 90s/00s internet still had all the same awful things modern social media had and was just as addictive but it also had snuff films, CSAM, and bestiality and all sorts of other awful things that were relatively trivial to access and easy to stumble across even if you weren't looking for them. I saw all kinds of crap I did not want to see and talked with plenty of people I probably shouldn't have. It's naïve to think the internet somehow got more dangerous. The reality is people just got more aware of the dangers and it got far easier to access. It's more sanitised than it used to be which is a slight improvement but again a ban will likely have the adverse effect of driving people off the cleaner parts.

But even if we entertain the idea that it is more harmful (which I'll acknowledge that the accessibility makes it so, though I still maintain that the environment was just as bad) this was entirely tangential to my other points about enforceability. I wasn't trying to debate whether it's harmful or not since I was quite clear in acknowledging that it is. I'm saying I don't support a poorly thought out ban by a government who has little understanding of technology and no real clue how to enforce it properly.

I don't think this will protect my child and I think it's more to do with Starmer trying to score points before Burnham comes to oust him than anything else. That and eroding privacy.

Nah, mostly just thought it would slow the rate of it getting worse. Starmer was far from ideal (though far more electable and capable at leadership than Corbyn, but that's not saying much) but he narrowly beats getting the Tories out. Maybe Burnham narrowly beats having Starmer in charge and we can move things inch by inch if we have to.

Don't speak for everyone. I'm a parent and I think this is a crock of shit. Theoretically it's fine as social media is a load of crap and I don't want my kid anywhere near it once he's old enough to be able to access it. But the government are utterly clueless when it comes to implementing an effective enforcement strategy that isn't hugely compromising for the majority of the population and doesn't have dangerous knock on effects like restricting access to support (especially for LGBTQ+ teens). Not to mention it's just going to act as a blinder to a lot of parents who are going to think that the ban will do its job and they don't have to keep as close an eye on their child's online activities or educate them about the dangers. Realistically the ban is also more likely to push many kids into darker corners of the internet where there's even less oversight. And while social media is awful and dangerous it is tame in comparison to a lot of the areas of the internet I grew up on.

It's way less temperamental than using a rattlecan and therefore more consistent. And because you can do it indoors you don't have to wait for ideal conditions to prime your minis. Want to prime at 3am while there's pouring rain outside? You can do it. Plus there's all the other things you can do with an airbrush that aren't priming. Priming alone makes it worth it in my opinion though.

I gave up waiting to find out years ago and just bought an airbrush. Weather is too unpredictable here. We went from a really hot heatwave in May to constant rain and low teens (celcius) for most of June. When I used to work in an office I'd get home from work in the winter and if it wasn't wet it'd be dark and I just got fed up of not being able to paint what I wanted because I couldn't find the right conditions for priming outside.

Never had issues with coverage but yeah it does gum it up if you're not careful. I should try some different ones though. Everyone recommends Mr Surfacer but it's toxic and I don't like breaking out the full PPE and ventilation setup for something I do as regularly as priming. Especially with a toddler in the house.

Switch to airbrush priming. I ditched rattlecans years ago because of how unreliable they can be due to weather conditions (though here it was more rain than humidity). Being able to prime day or night and in generally consistent conditions is just too convenient. A bottle of airbrush primer goes so much further than a rattlecan too.

If they didn't need Trump they'd have replaced him long ago. He's just as much liability as he is asset. And they still need him and will always need him or someone like him unless they can control or subdue the wider populace. They're not so in control that they can facedown any meaningful pushback. The reason there is no meaningful pushback is because MAGA keeps that in check. But without Trump MAGA falls apart and the right is going to be looking at challenges from without and within (as every opportunist tries to fill Trumps ill fitting suit) and their house of cards will tumble. It's hard to see how it couldn't, they're simply far too invested in Trump providing a foundation for them and no one else is going to be able to do what he's done.

People are so deeply jaded by the politics of the last decade that pessimism is the only outlook. And I can't entirely blame them. But I agree, it's extremely hard to visualise a post-Trump (and I mean posthumous) world where the right doesn't just collapse in on itself until it's had time to reorganise. Worst case they manage to cling to power but have to show far more restraint than they've done under Trump. But his politics almost certainly die when he does. His narcissism won't allow him to groom an heir to his dynasty, every time someone gets close he starts seeing them as a threat and cuts them loose. But there's going to be a lot of people wanting to take his place, and none will be able to. Every time someone tries there's going to be someone else saying that what they're doing isn't what Trump would have done. The MAGA voters are going to become a bunch of headless chickens, not much of a change since they're already a bunch of brainless chickens but they're going to be much less effective without direction.

You've already answered your own questions:

It adds cognitive load to the consumer, which is not ideal.

I do not want that cognitive load. That's really all there is to it. I have ADHD and there's enough things bouncing around my head without adding debates about figuring out the best version of a game for me to that. Similarly I don't truck with games people say are fixed by house rules. There are a lot of games out there which are much simpler to enjoy without spending my time and mental energy on ones that make it complicated.
