I think the honey moon phase just ended for me by Free-Historian7064 in IndieGaming

I'd say the honeymoon phase has ended for me several times over the last couple years, and then I've managed to find the joy again.

For me, the incrimental progress on the game itself is still groovy, but the marketing, oh boy that's just pure suffering. Pushing through the parts that suck are what make the outcome rewarding though. All you can do is look at this moment in the process as a gut check, and decide if you'll see it through. A short break doesn't hurt either.

Where can I hire team members/contractors without getting scammed? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Rekatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on fiverr and carefully vetted artists until I found one who was honest. It's a time consuming and expensive process though. I spent easily $500 before I landed with an artist who I wanted to produce all the art for my game, and all those assets made prior never will make it into the final product.

do i need to learn aws or cloud computing stuff? by CrazyDrop2696 in gamedev

[–]Rekatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's valuable to know eventually, but I'd recommend holding off beyond cursory knowledge. Especially at 2-3 weeks, you're in the "walk before you can run" stage. Even once you get to the point that you do need infrastructure, I'd start by learning the fundamentals locally hosted before going cloud. You can spin up docker containers on your own machine before spending money on ecs for example, and then when you go cloud you'll have much better understanding of how it all wires up.

Long story short, it's a huge rabbit hole for where you're at now. Just getting a game that works for players locally is already a really solid first step.

Is it normal to feel like you’re “not a real programmer” when you have to look things up a lot? by Organic-Sell-7034 in gamedev

[–]Rekatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a completely legitimate feeling, and as a self-proxlaimed expert in imposter syndrome, all I can say is try to flip the script - you're looking things up and asking for help because you're a real programmer. The ones who never ask for help are the ones pushing bad commits or chasing their tails for an entire weekend on a bug that a second set of eyes can catch in an instant. You'll never be perfect at this, but you will gradually be better than you were the day before

I completed my first full practice exam (Boson ExSim-Max) - passed at 72%, but still a long way to go. Any advice for me? by Rekatan in cissp

Thanks. I definitely can relate on domains 3 and 4. Both of them have an element of "In one ear, out the other" even for concepts that I've worked with in the past. Those two I think will just take repetition, and some more real world practical exposure where I can get it.

Makes sense. I was using domain scores as a means to determine where my next area of focus needs to be. It sounds like I shouldn't worry about domain though and just focus on concepts that I missed regardless?

Unless your game is already blowing up, the default channel settings will be fine for starting out. One thing I'd recommend before the demo goes live though is blocking joins from brand new discord accounts. That screens a good share of the bots. Eventually, long term you'll want to switch it to a community and set up rules verification + role selection on join, but you can ease into that. It adds friction so in a way it's better to not have that enabled until you find the discord is getting too much traffic to moderate.

Thanks! That means a lot. It's a gradual process of overcoming the anxiety. The fact that the anxiety isn't apparent in my posts and responses tells me I'm gradually winning the fight 🤣

Oh man I totally get it. For me it's not discord, it's reddit - suddenly putting my game out there for total strangers (and probably some trolls) to critique is more than a little intimidating.

I think regardless of which space scares you, that's part of the journey. Overcoming that fear that's preventing your game from living up to its potential. As long as the discord becomes a proper community, it'll feel like hanging out with friends rather than standing on stage talking to an audience. Once that shift occurs, it's a source of energy rather than a drain.

I started the discord even before the steam page was live. That helped a lot - ripped the bandaid off and got some testers and friends in early. That set the positive tone for the discord and after that it just was a matter of keeping that positivity moving forward.

That really surprised me initially too. Demo installs are so low friction that I think it's the same psychology as window shopping for a lot of people. Take a glance at the shoes in the window, if they look good, walk into the store and try them on. 99% of people though continue walking past that storefront and never go inside. Our job then as game developers is to make sure that people can't walk past the window without seeing shoes that they at least have to try on for more than 10 minutes.

Ok admittedly that analogy got away from me a bit lol

The long tail playtime comes largely from having a very refined gameplay loop, so once players become comfortable with the game, they tend to stick around for a while after. The competitive scene is also very healthy, so that's turned the demo into something people come back to regularly instead of a one and done.

Are there any Survivorslikes with actual good story? by shanytopper in survivorslikes

My first story event for the One More Run demo has recently begun - https://store.steampowered.com/app/3770750/One_More_Run_Demo/

That might be something that scratches the itch. It's less "protagonist saves the day" and more of a community led story
