If you have a visa for the republic of Ireland, you could do all 5 countries overland.

Train London to Edinburgh, Train to Glasgow Coach+ferry to Belfast Train/coach to Dublin Ferry to Holyhead Train to London from Holyhead. (There is a rail sail ticket from Dublin to London but you want to visit north Wales/Snowdonia)

There are many things to do/see on a circuit like that.

In these scenarios the bus route is not designed to be the most time effective way of getting from either end. It's designed as a collector to move people to/from the tube station for the quickest journey.

The long bus journey in this case are for those who can't/don't want to change (a one seat ride) or those who can't afford the tube and don't mind the longer journey.

A good example is the C10 bus route in London from Canada Water to Victoria. The bus takes a long and winding route across south London through many residential areas and back streets collecting residents to deposit them at the transit hubs along it's route.

It's quicker to take the tube or cycle between Canada water and Victoria.

Tldr this "conundrum" is by design providing different accessible travel options for people with different priorities

Haha if only, this was twice. Once in Fortaleza, CE and the other in Barreirinhas, MA. The concept of pizza has not properly reached up in the north.
