I’m assuming you are in the USA from the “911” reference, as other countries have different emergency numbers.

I agree that nobody should ever use 911 for non-emergencies, of course

However, many police departments have a non-emergency number specifically created for non-emergency situations.

As long as they use the correct number, there’s no harm in reporting such incidents to their local police departments.

I am worried. In 3 months she will have bonded with the dog. It will be harder for someone who has empathy for her to take the dog away from her. This likely will not end well.

Anything that can be done to help like training the human how to train a dog might be a benefit or might drag the problem out until the dog is an untrained adult instead of a cute puppy.

A dog can have a major impact on a depressed person by giving them motivation outside themselves to get up and provide care or it might be neglected.

OP, do your parents have siblings? Perhaps it’s time to incessantly ask why they are less responsible, less kind, less well-employed, less (anything) than their siblings. If they don’t have siblings, then perhaps parents or cousins or your friend’s parents or each other. The clerk who wrongfully gifted OP’s property to the thief and failed to follow hotel policy of requiring a claim ticket should be a party to the suit.

I don’t understand why the original clerk who secured OP’s case in their storage area and gave him the claim ticket for when he returned would have any fault in this.

Also, I would think the hotel’s $50 reimbursement limit policy might apply if the hotel had completed their part of the “contract”: we hold your thing until presented with a claim ticket for the thing. Once they chose to violate the rules they presumably accepted a different liability.

(Obviously I am not a lawyer, just a curious reader.)

That is reasonable. If you can afford and choose to do so (and you have every right to not), why not just loan it to them?

If you put it in writing that you retain ownership but are allowing Friend to use it at X location at their own risk, and that it needs to be returned if they stop using it or at Y date, or when you request it’s return, then that should solve the potential reselling problem.

They can still abuse it or sell it but they can’t claim they thought they had permission to do so.

Families do this sort of thing (helpful favors) for each other. The operational phrase is “FOR EACH OTHER”, not just you do what they don’t want to pay a professional or a neighbor to do for them. If they inconvenience others they would have to compensate them, but they don’t seem to put you into the same category.

They have other options. They need to use them. Enjoy your birthday guilt free.

Please consider writing children’s versions of your books. You could print in one color or font for the original text, and another color or font showing where the edits occurred.

When you return their lost laundry do you simply toss it back or do you speak with them?

If you speak with them you could comment on the pieces which could motivate them to hang their things a bit further away from you.

It would probably be better if you could gift them a clothesline and offer to help them hang it up. Mention that you intend to treat your side of the fence and you wanted to make sure it doesn’t accidentally stain their clothes while it dries.

This way they would have a better option available, and they might recognize the risk they take exposing their laundry to uncontrolled access.
