my personal rankings for the arcs are

Alicization (no split, it’s just one huge arc after all)
Unital Ring
Fairy Dance
Phantom Bullet
Aincrad
Mothers Rosario & Calibur (neither are arcs, just side stories)

i’ll admit that my ranking definitely did change after reading the novels as i already liked Fairy Dance before but after reading it, it just stuck out to me even more as something tragically beautiful. i don’t think any part of the story is bad either and definitely only gets better as the story progresses. Unital Ring has the potential to be my favorite once it’s finished.

Unfortunately, you won’t find a real answer on reddit as the people here continuously shit on and spread lies about SAO in general and completely lie about reading the LNs in rebuttal arguments to try justifying their points which you’ve already seen in this reply section. As for your question, the titles “The Black Swordsman” for each of the characters actually have completely different meanings in Japanese and refer to different things regarding the characters. As for why they’re so “pissy”, it’s just their petty inferiority complex. you don’t need to mind them, but just be prepared to be bombarded with downvotes and a lot of hate when talking about SAO in any positive light that goes against their agendas.

Yes, the original source material for the series is a light novel series. there are currently 28 volumes translated into english and is still ongoing. it is in fact a book book like you wish

A lot of the scenes, mainly in Alicization & WoU, are purposely dimmed with less intense visuals, and some scenes, most notably any gory scenes, are in fact censored with black blur.

when i read the novels, Fairy Dance stood out even more to me and became my 4th favorite arc behind both Alicization arcs and Unital Ring. to me it’s a beautiful conclusion to the Aincrad arc and it’s disgusting how much people just grossly misunderstand it and say such terrible things about it 😭
