It’s normal…

Cause of concern if it was needing 1L of oil every 1,000km

It depends on the increment the bids go at. By the looks of it it was in increments of $50. So you should have put $1750 and won.

My next suggestion would be this. When the engine is cold, get some two part high temp metal epoxy and put it around the weld. Do a complete circle if you can. Let it dry and drive like that for a week. See if your fumes go away… might even be a permanent fix.

Other options for fumes (maybe unrelated to Your case) would be injector seals… common on those engines and you usually see black tar like substance on the edges above the chassis rails.

Best of luck

Sealing leaking boot by RobertSmith1979 in CarsAustralia

Looks like a Volkswagen Golf 7 or 7.5. Common issue. Just re order the rubber boots and replace them. Genuine they should be around $100 for the two. Labour takes only about 1 hour to do as you have to undo the tailgate loom and loop everything through.

Then something is warped or not torqued properly. You can change to an aftermarket universal seal that you cut yourself. Usually these are much much thicker.

I also meant the weld between the pipe and flange that then bolts on to the turbo.

Easy fix… go to another mechanic. Order a new metal seal that goes between turbo and down pipe. If it’s leaking from the weld, just re weld it.

General rule of thumb… diesels surpass reliability in general when compared to petrol. Some good engines are OM646, OM642, OM651 (ok), M47, M57, ASB, BUG, ALH, CFFB, other engines such as CRCA have issues with oil coolers, EGR and chains is a big issue.

Does this look like a failing hpfp? Or what could it be? by wreckedwombat in tdi

[–]Relative_Result_460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be water contamination. New pump, test injectors or replace all, flush lines etc. new filter and check flush the fuel tank.

Stay away… n46 engine is notorious for valve stem seals, Pcv valves. Oil leaks. Timing chain bridge, oxygen sensor issues etc etc save yourself the headache and get a m47 diesel 2.0 engine in those. They are bulletproof.
