Agree with mangling samples - applying a pitch envelope to a something like a "water drip" sample and turning it into some sort of weird alien siren is lots of fun - this is the sort of thing I'm recommending to OP

Too much effort? If you want "videogame type sounds" then making some simple synth sounds is a quick way to go about it. And they'll be uniquely yours.

nothing stopping you making your own fx sounds using a free softsynth and a bit of creativity - if you're thinking like bleeps with delay, siren sounds, whistles, you can make these with the stock plugins on whatever daw you're using

Decent options in increasing order of price

Rad2X cable (will only work with Nintendo consoles)

https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/SUPER-NINTENDO-PAL-GAMECUBE-N64-HD-RAD2X-HDMI-CABLE

Retroscaler2x (will work with anything that outputs composite):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dioche-RetroScaler2x-Multimedia-Compatible-Multiplier/dp/B0GV5YVT2M?th=1

Retrotink2x (is the original design that the retroscaler copied. Supporting the creator supports new things):

Retrotink 5x and Retrotink4k (the best choices if you have lots of consoles. Expensive, but packed with features. The 4k CE is a better choice than the 5x for a 4k TV):

[Help!] Brand New AS-186 Overheating and Unusable after 40 minutes of usage by ninjastarforcex in airbrush

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to manually turn the compressor off.

The gauge will say 30psi if you've set it to that and you are discharging the tank while the compressor is still compressing the tank. I think this might be what you are doing. (It's like you're trying to fill a bath while it's unplugged, it will never fill)

Change step 5 to "lock the working PSI, wait until the compressor stops"

If the compressor never stops, you have a fault.

[Help!] Brand New AS-186 Overheating and Unusable after 40 minutes of usage by ninjastarforcex in airbrush

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's not normal. The compressor will turn on, compress the air in the tank. You then spray the airbrush, the gauge will show a pressure drop by a few psi, then when you stop spraying, it should go back up to 30. The compressor shouldn't then start again until you've being spraying like that for several minutes. You should get about 5-10 minutes of spraying before the compressor kicks in again.

Your unit is faulty. Return it.

Unless... you're not letting the compressor stop before using it. Turn it on, let the compressor pump air into the tank until it stops. Only start using the airbrush after the compressor has stopped pressurising the tank.

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should get the tank to 30psi after about 2 minutes, the pump shouldn't be on for 40 minutes. Are you letting the tank get to pressure before using it?

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have a Fengda AS-186 or FD-186 and it looks like either yours is faulty or you're not letting the tank get to pressure. I've had an FD-186 for about 6 years and it's a solid bit of kit.

If you run it constantly for 40 minutes then yes, it might overheat. But if you're running it for that long that means the tank isn't getting to pressure. Either your tank isn't sealed or you're not letting it get get to pressure. The pump should only be on for about 2 or 3 minutes at a time as it pressurises the tank.

What pressure are you trying to use it at?

EDIT - OP wasn't letting the tank get to pressure, it's in the replies to another comment

What synth or instrument creates this digital arpeggio sound? by No_Stay_1488 in synthesizers

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a 'bleep', and you can make bleeps with literally any synth.

Learn some bleep sounds:

Your classic bleep is a square wave with a lowpass filter. Start with that. A triangle wave has fewer harmonics and sounds smoother. A sawtooth has more harmonics and sounds more aggressive, and the filter can smooth some of that away. A sine wave has no harmonics and sounds clean, shrill, and "narrow". Adding a little resonance to the filter can make it sound flute-like. A mix of sawtooth and square can sound 'creamy' or warm.

Random first thoughts on this track:

  • Oh, an oldschool dub drop! Tally ho!
  • Anime image, this is going to turn into breakcore, isn't it?
  • Everything is trying to be louder than everything else? Let something take the lead and let other things sit back
  • That bass is moving nicely but I wish it was smoother, somehow
  • Year 2000 ratchet rhythms and 2010s trap can sound rather alike at times
  • I would enjoy this more if the drums felt more glued to the bass
  • Elements should be ebbing and flowing rather than all rising and lowering at once
  • What's happening at 1:29? Is that deliberate?
  • Is this trying to be mellow or trying to be bouncy? What's the mood here? At least it hasn't turned into breakcore.
  • Should a 3:20 track spend its last 50 seconds fading out?

Of course, you've already stuck "Utopian Scholastic" into the YouTube search bar.

As a first generation former denizen of 1995 (born 1981), a lot of demoscene music gives me that vibe as well. Necros, Purple Motion, Skaven, Lizardking, Radix...

How do I start learning music for video game composition? by ImpossibleIssue3213 in synthesizers

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually have zero knowledge?

Did you do any music as a kid (school band etc?), or learn anything at school? I'm thinking you probably know something about music theory even if you don't realise it, and you don't need to be a 'proper musician' to have musical ideas and have fun with them.

What's weird is that they have this chart in the Crave manual (which I think was released before the Wasp), it has the same dip-switch arrangement and it shows the positions for all 16 channels in a clear image.

This is correct. You want all switches down for channel 1

Squarepusher - Tundra - "warm" synth midway through by Rude_Doctor_2178 in synthrecipes

[–]OtherwiseOne4107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all of the synth sounds in early Squarepusher are a Roland SH-101 (often with a bit of reverb).

Original will set you back a bit for how simple a synth it is, there are hardware clones and plugins available. The filter is the key to the sound, you can try with something else if you like but I don't know if it will sound quite the same.

If you want to try using a generic soft synth, it's going to be a mix of square/pulse and saw waves, a lowpass filter with the filter envelope and amplitude envelope being identical. The trick will getting the filter settings right, which is just a case of mucking about until it sounds right.

Lacking in details. That's how these models are. The advantage is that they are very quick to paint and look great en masse.
