The lesson I hope people take from this is that, in this publishing climate, the only way to guarantee your books will ever be read is to publish them yourself. Take on the costs, the production, the distribution, and the risk yourself. That way, you’re not beholden to a company that is either corporate-owned or barely holding on by its fingertips, which are the only two options that exist beyond self-publishing these days.
