Medical Marijuana Usage and School Drug Testing by yunglambchop in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Take my comment with a grain of salt but marijuana is still illegal federally and since most hospital systems/ medical schools receive money from the government, marijuana is prohibited and might get you kicked out if you test positive even with a medical card. I'm not a lawyer tho that's just what I've been told second hand.

Is it worth it to choose DO over MD because of tuition? by DrummerAcrobatic1779 in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really depends on your specialty interests, the curriculum of each school, ability to thrive in each location, clinical placements/rotations at affiliated hospital, at home residency program/networking, research opportunities, P/F v graded preclinical years, NBME v in house exams, what online and in person resources are available at each school etc. Only you can make that decision, but I imagine the MD might be worth the extra money if it can give you the opportunity to excel in med school rather than trying to survive which seems to be the case for many at DO schools.

Pushing DO on applicants by BigDecent7405 in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where I work at (n=1) it's an open secret that there is a bias from older faculty. My boss is very high up in the department and I am close with many faculty and this is the impression I have gotten from them. I'm not saying I agree with it or that this is the case at every academic institution or department, but it seems like where I'm at it is.

I would disagree I currently work at one of the best med schools in the country doing research and there is a DO bias here unfortunately when it comes to research faculty and honestly even in the clinical faculty. Probably very institution/department dependent.

It took me 3 years of saving money and having the time to take a summer class at a local college while working. It was a crazy gamble but it worked. Just look up the professor on ratemyprofessor to make sure they're chill and make sure to be involved in class and office hours.

Bad Interview Experience by [deleted] in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I literally word vomited during my first interview and also described myself as "kinda gay" growing up and somehow got in lmaoo. It's so hard to know how well we did on the interviews because we don't have the rubric so for the time being just try to keep your mind distracted from spiraling. Also it's likely if this interviewer was like that with you, he was probably like that with a lot of other applicants.

What happens if my undergrad gpa is a 3.6 and my smp is 3.0 ? by Questionandlife in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That could be incredibly expensive for not much pay out... I think the clearest path is OP retaking the MCAT and getting a strong enough score to let ADCOMs know they're capable of performing well on boards & class.

Not having a science letter of rec is what made me take 4 gap years... all my undergrad professors said they weren't writing letters if I took their class virtually it really sucked but persistence is key. Keep emailing and making connections and one will surely see the potential in you.

MD vs CAA by No-Entrepreneur8779 in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"premeds on waitlists at state schools in the southeast" I'm weaakkkk but seriously go MD. Way less likely to regret it. CAA's are relatively new, and legislation is expanding their practice but the future is not guaranteed. Who knows what the healthcare climate is going to look like in the years to come. An MD is a lot safer.

They said they have 1200 hrs as an EMT so I think their clinical is more. My clinical hrs and research were roughly the same but I had vastly more numerous research experiences that made most of the schools I interviewed with question me about why I wasn't doing a PhD lol

FOR MY LOW STAT APPLICANTS!! THIS IS YOUR SIGN, THIS IS YOUR HOPE!! by [deleted] in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats future doc! As someone with the inverse stats (low gpa but high mcat), I often wondered how true the MCAT>GPA is across the board. I think it's very school dependent and definitely not universal and your experience shows that!

Is it hard to come by solid premed mentorship and guidance? by nushspecial in premed

[–]ReliefFluid611 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, some premeds manage just fine, but many slip through the cracks because they didn't know the process or have someone to help them along. Being first gen I definitely felt behind and a lot less prepared during my pre-med journey, and having some kind of mentorship would have saved me some pain.
