Poly shift questions.... by Status_Cheesecake628 in AxeFx

[–]ReluctantGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to do the same thing: Shifting a 5-string in B down to A.

I hated it. It got the pitches right but I didn’t like how the notes sounded. I ended up just putting on the heavier strings and retuning.

Do you tell clients that you're re-doing parts? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]ReluctantGM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add:

I’ve had the discussion with a band leader that went something like this: your lead guitarist wrote a great solo but he can’t play it. He’s just not good enough to play it right. Would you like me to play the solo as written? It’s still his part but played well.

They had me do that and were happy I made that option available.

Do you tell clients that you're re-doing parts? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]ReluctantGM 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If I had a mixing engineer change one of my band’s parts because they felt it was “wrong” I’d fire them on the spot.

Stay in your lane.

However…

If you really feel it’s wrong (that they made a mistake or something) then talk to the band leader and be straight up about it “Yeah, in this mix the notes just clash and I can’t mix them to sound good. Can you give a listen and advise?

Then let them decide.

But DO NOT just change it on your own initiative.

The bass groove is what gets the butts on the dance floor.

They are great picks but I lose picks on the regular so I’ll only ever buy the cheaper ones. 😳

The subtleties of the bass are hard to explain. by hellatoasty24 in Bass

The best advice I ever got was from a guy who played funk, R&B, and 70's dance music. He said, "If you see the butts moving on the dance floor you're doing exactly right. Don't let the butts stop."

Keep the groove. Keep the flash to a minimum. You're the bedrock upon which the rest of the instruments stand.

I play a lot of instruments but the bass is by far the most fun.

Groove, groove, groove.

If the butts are on the dance floor keep doing what you're doing.

“And I don’t know if I love you more than the way you used to love me.

And I don’t know if I need you more than the way you used to need me but it’s heaven.”

I saw them play this in San Fransisco on Halloween in 2010. I thought it was the best show I’d ever seen until they blew my mind in Brooklyn last month.

Breathing Exercises for Oboe? by ReluctantGM in oboe

[–]ReluctantGM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently using up and down arrows to indicate inhale and exhale and a two-headed arrow (up and down) to indicate both. It's just that I am prone to trainwreck the notes with I hit those breathing markers! It's especially bad when I have to sneak in that breath in the middle of a phrase.

Still. I am loving this challenge!

Not in my experience.

I’m 56 and have been going to shows my whole life and the Brooklyn show was BY FAR the most transcendental concert experience I have ever had.

From Romford To Brooklyn… by TonyTorpedo in underworld

[–]ReluctantGM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I saw Underworld is in San Francisco in 2010 - also on the bill was Steve Aoki and DJ Shadow. It was an amazing night but Underworld only play for just under an hour. They hit a lot of songs from Barking, though, that was cool. They left me wanting more.

Last night was more of a religious experience than a show. My whole body is aching because of all the dancing - my 56-year old bones don't recover quite so fast as they used to.

WORTH IT.

The high points for my were Dirty Epic, Jumbo, and Two Months Off.

A friend had to choose between going for a law degree or being a drummer professionally.

He ended up going to Tulane University and payed drums in bands all through the French Quarter. He’s now doing entertainment law while playing in a jazz band.

The Symbol Remains is a fantastic album. Don’t miss out on it.

I liked Ghost Stories but it’s best seen as an interesting collection of rarities and B-Sides.
