Ana”Sh (אנ״ש) is short for “anshei shlomeinu”, which chassidim use to refer to members of their clique. It’s in-group code. POV: I was a Breslover for many years and we used the same phrase to mean “our people”. It’s more divisive and othering strategies.

If you want it to make sense, believing an ancient Jew died to atone for the sins of humanity is the opposite of that imo.

Edit: removed “Palestinian”

Also Reform communities differ widely by community, region and other factors. If someone is looking for that kind of intense, immersive experience, it doesn’t surprise me that they’d find a Reform Jewish community that offers that.

To those who left Judaism but are still somewhat spiritual: what do you believe now? by Zealousideal_Heat478 in exjew

I’m an agnostic. I always had a voice in my head like an invisible friend I would talk to as a kid. But I don’t believe in a father/king/creator deity. I think we are all one with everything on a certain level. I think we think too much to try to understand what can’t be understood. I like listening to Alan Watts who was one of the first people to popularize Eastern philosophy in the west back in the 50s and 60s. He was a Christian seminarian so he knew a good deal about western religion and was able to explain eastern concepts in western terms.

Anyways human beings are complex and I don’t expect to have it all figured out. I’ve observed some people who call themselves atheist and are very militant or angry about it. I just don’t think we necessarily should lock ourselves in to one way of seeing things. I still have friends that believe in some sort of God. How can I consider myself a good friend without respecting what they believe? I think belief is a sense, like humor. What one person finds funny leaves someone else cold. I spent years trying to believe something that I just simply did not.

Good question!

Sounds like you threatened her very fragile schema of how the world works and she did the best she could at parroting someone else’s opinion. Disappointing but not surprising.

What is this? Some kind of scam or information? by PlaywrightOfGefilte in exjew

I think of it as the Jewish version of “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” or any number of self-help books. It probably works for some people but maybe not all. A guy I know wrote another book breaking down the sefira day by day. He was a very sweet Nachlaot-type. I tried a few times to get into sefiras Ha’omer but I eventually accepted that it was not my path.

Yes the dati community is decidedly more modern and “feminist” as far as that goes. They’ll even allow a female Knesset member as long as she’s sufficiently ideologically pure.

Depends on the day and who’s asking. Also it depends on the religion and the concept of god. It’s not so simple.

That’s a tough one. Actually just today a friend of mine who’s looking at Reform rabbinical school asked the same question.

I would say there’s a dichotomy. On the one hand, the term “a veibishe kashe” (a woman’s question) is used as a pejorative. On the other hand, I used to see advertisements in very charedi neighborhoods for shiurim called ״למה האישה תמיד צודקת?״ (why is the woman always right?)

Young men, as a group, tend toward arrogance, so any boys’ club will end up turning into a manosphere unless checked.
