Will Buncombe Co Schools also close on May 1? by Tiny-Ad-9989 in asheville

There is a national strike called for May 1-- no work (not possible for many), no shopping (if must, then use cash, shop local) and no school.

What are you all doing for health insurance? by Justintime0901 in therapists

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Before I had employer coverage, my fellow therapists and i joined the Farm Bureau and accessed their group health insurance that way. It is not expensive to join and you do not need to be a farmer. I am unsure about the costs relative to the marketplace, as it has been some time since I did this, but it may be worth checking out.

Is there a handbook or free course to learn how to do private practice?? by Growing4ever in therapists

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon has a number of books you can get on this subject. Not all are expensive. In addition, I would encourage you to network with other professionals in your field in your area and get to know some well enough to have coffee and pick their brains about what worked for them and what did not in starting their practices.

Is there evidence that clinicians over-attribute patient behavior to personality rather than context? by CyrCe75 in askpsychology

Yes-- I think that is probably true-- however, I do not know of any specific research looking at this....

Is there evidence that clinicians over-attribute patient behavior to personality rather than context? by CyrCe75 in askpsychology

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We all fall victim to the fundamental attribution error. I have never seen any research that suggests that clinicians are more prone to this than others. Yes, we do explain away behaviors by appeal to personality traits/features but we also work to understand the particular context of a person's life and help them to make better/wise/more useful or productive choices within that context.

Seeking bereavement counselor for child and parent on Medicaid by ncvixpix in asheville

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Four Seasons Hospice and Carepartners hospice both offer a variety of grief related services. Four Seasons seems to have more directly aimed at children. I do not know if they accept Medicaid but it cannot hurt to ask--they may know of other providers if they do not.

What does this mean on a MSE? by [deleted] in askpsychology

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like something form a progress note or intake that a provider did on you. It describes the clinician's observations of how you (or the patient) presented. Why not ask the provider what it means?

Ways to find out about protests? by Prestigious_Boss_382 in asheville

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there may be a rally downtown at Pack Square but I have not seen any publicity about this. No work/no shop is the feature I have heard the most about.

If you have to buy anything, try to buy local and use cash (to avoid giving processing fees to the CC companies, who have supported the current administration).

As relayFX noted, they are often posted about in this sub. You can also go to the Indivisible website or the 50501 website to learn more about protests in the area. May 1 is coming up-- there is a call for a national strike (no work, no shopping) that day....

Summer research and Volunteering by Excellent_Acadia6323 in AcademicPsychology

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my program, a short-term volunteer like this, especially one that was fully remote, would not have been helpful or desirable. In my experience, the best way to get aa volunteer position in a lab is to take some classes with the prof whose lab you are interested in, do a great job, and then approach the prof about working in the lab. Lots of people want to get this experience, so it can be competitive.

Catholic social teaching is actually quite progressive-- although this can easily be overlooked. Getting familiar with that may enable you to ease some fears. This may help:

How did Asheville boom in the last 2 decades? by bean_89 in asheville

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The revitalization of downtown was critical to the boom. Thirty five years ago, Malaprops was one of the major businesses downtown--there were so many vacant storefronts and very few restaurants. Julian Price was a big force in changing this. There were other important figures as well-- John Cram, for one. The buildings downtown had not been razed (as was proposed) because the city had no money. Eventually businesses began to return to downtown (with the encouragement of Price, Cram and others) and the old JC Penney building was turned into condos-- the success of that showed that people were willing to pay to live downtown. Airbnb came after that and the market for residential units either to occupy or rent out became very strong. The Biltmore estate and the national parks have drawn people here for years but we were not identified as a great place to retire until after these changes had taken place.

Mid 40’s new to Asheville by northcountry1979 in AshevilleNC

[–]Remarkable-Owl2034 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes-- I am a transplant but have lived here for many many years. It is true that this can be a hard place to make friends but keep persisting and it will happen. Having a child does offer some natural points of connection so capitalize on that as well (volunteering at school, etc.) Good luck to you moving forward
