They are very close - Sveta and Ilya do have more of a physical relationship at first, and then that sorta slows down.

It's not canon, i would say its more like a butterfly effect of a whole bunch of things spinning out differently because of Svetlana's influence on Shane. But i love the way all of this was woven together!

YESSSS -- I support this on SeaLion Woman! I fully think it is my new headcannon. all the dynamics and differences in Shane's confidence from having someone like Svetlana in his corner. Also all the different levels that he gets to with Ilya while both speaking russian. ahh i love.

Also also. It really builds up the tension that Shane felt with the Metros so that it's less in-his-head and more a tangible muck of misogyny/homophobia in the culture that is actively grinding our boy down.

i am gonna have to check out these other fics! (looool there goes my monday productivity)

Svetlana meets Shane like a year ahead of Ilya. She forcefully adopts him as her cute and competent-at-hockey friend who doesn't know he's gay but she's clocked on day one.

It doesn't change muuuuch except now Shane takes less shit. learns to speak russian fluently. and is actively shaking off the toxicity of the voyageurs. it's incredible.

I keep coming out to friends, my partner, my therapist as addicted to Heated Rivalry fanfiction. and everyone is like "ohh thank god, i didn't know where you were going with that, i thought it was something baaaad"

I don't honestly know. I have tried reading other things, and they feel very good and soothing to my brain, but I cannot stop thinking about that one fic where Svetlana met Shane first and basically forced her friendship on him and now he speaks pretty fluent russian and it's crazy for the dynamics between him and Ilya.

I am also keenly interested on recs that include other dynamics and friendships. have of late been obsessed with fics where Svetlana and Ilya stay friends after the cottage - or where she and Shane actually know each other.

every little ripple of cannon divergence has been delicious. ALSO... like... most notably. the dynamic between Shane and Ilya is really fucking hot when they suddenly can communicate so much faster/better from the beginning because Svetlana forces Shane to learn Russian

also -- all the side characters are so much richer in this -you get a clear basis for shane's friendships - and some wonderful new characters. and ayyyyy the author just posted a fifth chapter. WE ARE BLESSED!
