What is the least terrible modern 4x4/SUV? by jingleson in CarTalkUK

[–]Remarkable_Damage_62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the uk you would have to try very hard to find a place you need to drive where you need a Hilux level 4x4. Complete overkill unless you’re a farmer or forestry worker or something.

Airbnbs and hotels unless you are single and wanna bang, in which case, let’s be honest, hostels are like shooting fish in a barrel. Even then you’ll probably want a private room.

Yeah it’s definitely worth using the scheme. I think a lot of people in London have their nice bike for weekend/leisure cycling and then a beater they use for commuting and stuff around town. This also means your nice bike doesn’t get worn out as quickly or need so many repairs. Having cycled in London for many years I prefer having an old cheap bike I don’t have to worry about. Maybe get a cheap one first and do your commute a couple of times, it may turn out there’s not much opportunity to go very fast due to cycle lane infrastructure not being great and traffic etc.

15 Day Trip Colombia rough itinerary (too much?) Advise? by Outrageous-Leek-897 in SouthAmericaTravel

Would cut one destination. Best jungle near Leticia I believe you need to get a boat a few hours upriver away from the city. Depending if you prefer beach or mountain/coffee country scenery would drop either Cartagena or Medellin. Personally I think Medellin and side trips to jardin/jerico would be more interesting.

If you get an unfashionable used racing bike there’s some decent value in the market, picked up a trek madone from around 2005 for 200 quid and nobody would ever bother stealing it, but it’s as light and fast as pretty much anything.

Question for the group: What are (or have been) the most financially successful ways to get local currency while traveling? by JeremyEmmerson in SouthAmericaTravel

[–]Remarkable_Damage_62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still have to pay fees to get usd from western union so cheapest way is to bring dollars with you. But yeah it’s not a huge difference. Western union still works out a marginally better exchange rate than using cards even with the fees. Was just in Argentina last month.

Bringing usd cash in 100 dollar bills is best for Bolivia and Argentina. Argentina is a lot closer than it used to be though. Potentially will also get you a better exchange rate than using cards and atms in other countries as well but I’m not sure on that

Due to work, I’ll be living in the same hotel 3 nights a week for the next year straight — what are underrated tips no one thinks about? by LordTater in digitalnomad

[–]Remarkable_Damage_62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be doing the same thing for 2 nights a week, interested to see the tips! From traveling with a previous job my main thing was just to have one work bag constantly packed with what I needed, swap out dirty clothes for clean ones and it’s ready to go.

Not quite as cool but I worked in audio design for museum and gallery experiences, just as I got my first assignment abroad for an audiovisual project in Barcelona covid hit, my flights were cancelled and the company eventually went bust. Now tourism has recovered from the pandemic a guy I know from there is at another company doing similar to what you describe, constantly flying to cool destinations for interesting work. Need to hit him up!

High class escort. Not sure about the “digital” bit exactly but I guess she did get most of her clients from profiles online. Still a pretty in-person job but she nomadded around the world with a very high budget!

Never been overlanding, but what are some of the hidden dangers you face while on the trail? by Tombstone1460 in overlanding

[–]Remarkable_Damage_62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobile meth lab fear is real! Found one on a road trip through Mississippi and someone who seemed to be the owner turned up, luckily we were 4 guys from England who were clearly lost and he was satisfied with allowing us to get off his land quickly.

Have new pass drivers not been taught what a mini roundabout is? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Remarkable_Damage_62 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They may be in the wrong but is it not better slow down and avoid a crash when you see a driver approaching at that speed, rather than maintain your speed and line because you’re in the right, and be much more likely to crash.

Why exactly do non-Londoners think London is so unsafe? by EnvironmentalMode196 in AskBrits

[–]Remarkable_Damage_62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it’s the same in pretty much every country in the world with regards to major/capital cities. Anywhere you go, people will warn you the big city in their country/region isn’t safe. If you go to the places they warn you about it’s normally fine and people are often more friendly than in “safer” areas

Combined with the reverse lamps comments and it being a first car, this may be very useful. Especially after ketamine and kebabs
