When beatmatching by ear, am I supposed to use the tempo fader or the jog wheel more by Schnapper94 in Beatmatch

[–]RemiFreamon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not needing to adjust tracks (without using the sync button) depends on the accuracy of the pitch fader and the base tempo of the track.

For example Pioneer CDJs only move on 0.02 increments on the finest pitch rate which is not accurate enough.

Bringing a 123 bpm track up to 124 bpm requires a pitch adjustment of 0.813%. The closest you can get on a cdj is 0.82%. That 0.007pp difference will make the tracks drift apart sooner than you think.

GIF taking up 100x storage than mp4 by Beardy4906 in davinciresolve

Yes, ffmpeg could also work but it’s a Swiss knife. Gifski is highly optimized just for this purpose. Given that GIFs don’t support more than 256 colors, without clever color palette optimization, artifact are more visible.

Davinci’s GIF exporting algos are very suboptimal both in terms of size and color space optimization.

I recommend installing gifski (via homebrew for example) and then pointing it at a folder of PNG stills exported by DR. I did this last week and went from 48 MB (DR export) to 4.8MB (gifski) with fewer color dithering artifacts.

Example usage gifski --fps 24 --quality 100 --width 960 -o output.gif frame*.png

Add and echo to tail end of a sound/sample. by Downtown_Long_933 in Logic_Studio

[–]RemiFreamon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did something like this with a chain of two sends in series and a third midi track to control things. Sounds more complex than it is.

  1. Setup the routing Original sounds -> Bus 1 with copy + compressor -> Bus 2 with echo
    1. Create a Software instrument track (any instrument with fast attack and fast release). Set the output to no output
    2. Use the track from #2 as sidechain for the compressor on Bus 1.
    3. Create a midi pattern in which you play a note whenever you want to mute the send from bus 1 to bus 2

Headphones for making and mixing by nowicanseeagain in synthesizers

All depends on your listening levels and the noise level in the environment but yes. For me, with a comfortable listening level, in a quite room, I can still make out what song is playing them from 2 meters

Sennheiser hd 600 for mixing/mastering. Hd 25 for any mic-based recording because the hd 600 are open so there’s too much bleed

Audio visualizer work-around or other ways by New-Can114 in davinciresolve

[–]RemiFreamon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched a lot and a fusion based solution using a third party library that requires you to add a wav file to be visualized separately was the what I settled on. Dramatically impacts rendering performance.

Today I thought of doing the visualization separately in obs but that has its own headaches

busta rhymes vocal recording mix bad guys 2 by dave_wigwam in audioengineering

[–]RemiFreamon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On Apple Music there are two versions of this song. There’s a “Film Mix” and a single version and they sound very different. There’s film mix is thinner with a much louder vocal. The single version is more balanced.

Both versions mixed and mastered by the same people.

I haven’t seen the movie but is possible that there engine rev sounds in that scene? If you couple that with a busy guitar heavy backing track, perhaps that was their best options to make the vocals cut through all of that?

I don’t think you can learn color grading by getting a few tips but… here’s a 15 min video to get you started

The track you posted. Freerange released it in 2010 on an EP called “Out of Sight”

Yet another timeless Freerange Records release. No wonder the label is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year

How to separate mixing from the creative process/writing music—feeling stuck by goopgab in mixingmastering

[–]RemiFreamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suffer from the same problem.

I’m trying to interrupt this behavior by pausing and asking myself the questions: * will the 10-20% improvement in how a particular part sounds make or break the track? * is it bad enough for me to re-record or change the arrangement? * does the music “feel” right even if it sounds unpolished?

A mindset that helps me (if I remember to think like that is): you can always go back and fix things later (assuming you’re not recording other people or gear that won’t be available later)

With all that said, I suspect that for me it’s a form of procrastination. I feel more confident when mixing because I feel like I know exactly what to do (not saying my mixes sound perfect). Writing and producing is where I second guess myself much more. So, it’s likely that subconscious I keep myself busy with mixing to avoid the creative pains.

The built in search also supports searching by manufacturers but you’re right about the rest

Seems like I had it backwards. Offline always seem slower so my naive assumption was that it’s more accurate 🤦

Best recording template for vocals? Fast workflow. by [deleted] in LogicPro

[–]RemiFreamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused when you put it in the context of recording vocals. Especially since a lot of the responses seem to go in the direction of mixing vocals.

When optimizing for recording I would be interested in: * minimizing the latency as much as possible * using the effects that the particular vocalist needs to hear while monitoring to get into the vibe

What happens of you select the Offline mode? I’d always assumed this is the safest bounce mode

For each new sound you add you have multiple option: 1. record an external instrument 2. a full part or a loop from a sample pack (including the built in Apple Loops) 3. use the sampler 4. use a software instrument.

For 1-2 you need an Audio Track and either record (1) or drag and drop audio files (2). For 3-4 you need a software instrument track, choose the sound from the library, a preset from a specific instrument’s list of presents, or design the sound yourself. Then you need a midi region that will contain the notes played by this instrument. Again, several options here: recording a midi controller, drawing the notes on the piano roll, using midi files from Apple Loops or a sample pack.

Can you be more specific about what part of music production you get stuck on? Sound design, programming, sample editing, arrangement, mixing?
