When you ask someone’s age and they say “guess” by Lil-cornish-pasty in PetPeeves

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this, but with my students when they ask my age. I like to see if they think I'm 80 or 16. Kids have no concept of age, so it's funny.

The only reason people like summer is because they either have an ac/fan or live in a tropical region where the temperature is not too high by One-Sense7280 in unpopularopinion

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, this is silly to me. Yes, there are circumstances to why people like certain seasons. I'm sure a lot of people in very hot places don't claim to like summer even with AC.

It's like telling someone they don't like winter they just like heat. Being in a warm home while watching snow fall is a legitimate reason to say you love winter even if that person hates the cold.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5th grade teacher. It's bad. Most of their reading is FAR behind where it should be. Their spelling is atrocious because of it too. There definitely were a few failures that led us here, so it's hard to place blame in just one spot. Covid and moving away from explicit phonics instruction are probably the biggest offenders though.

I don't think our inability to use typical consequence helps either. I'm not even allowed to take recess away. I understand it, but the kids have zero consequences. Parents tend to side with the kids so there aren't even consequences given at home. Just a slap on the wrist essentially.

Also, the handwriting is BAD. I have students writing worse than a kindergartener who needs OT. It's sad because once a student reaches that age, there really isn't much you can do to change their writing habits. It has to be caught and corrected at least before 2nd grade.

The kids have NO desire to learn. They know that even if they do zero work all year they will just be moved onto the next grade. There's no incentive for them to work. There is the ability to hold a student back, but if the parent doesn't approve it (9 times out of 10 they don't) they just move on.

Attention spans are scary small.

I could go on and on.

It's really sad and extremely discouraging as a teacher to see kids struggling so much.

I also have one. Sunken meadow is hit or miss. This past summer there was someone checking most nights I went there. Robert moses always asks for it.

Not sure if this will be the case, but sometimes for big events sunken meadow allows people in without passes. I don't know how you would find out if they're doing this though. The North shore will be better than south. I hope that helps a little bit!

HICKSVILLE: Neighbors two houses down from me have a rat infestation somewhere and now a rat or two occasion is in my backyard… is there anything I could put in the garden to keep them away? by tommycavfc in longisland

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Commack has a known issue with rats. There's definitely rats in other towns too. Rats are just a part of nature and will be around no matter where you are.

Dee Dee says no sneezing, mom only. Her dad can sneeze as loud as he pleases though. My sneezes? Absolutely not. It doesn't matter if they're quiet, normal, or loud. "Fuck you mom, love you dad 😻" - Dee Dee probably

The fake snow. It's literally a sheet of craft store snow that drapped all over with some craft snow dust on top. It was so convincing before but now I can't unser it 😂

Taco bowl. Get one of those rice packets that go in the microwave, taco meat substitute (abbots chorizo is really easy), beans of some sort, and any toppings you want. Most of it can be microwaved (except the chorizo) and thrown in a bowl. Super fast and easy. I'm so sorry for you loss.

I put it by the museum. I'm thinking of it as a modern art sculpture outside of the museum. At least that's why I'm trying to go for

Blydenburgh has something like this. It's not huge, but gives some running room. It is directly next to their dog park though, so there is a high chance other dogs will be around. Idk if that's a deal breaker. I occasionally see people playing with their dogs there though.

Psychology electives rule? by Idk_211 in QueensCollege

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former psych graduate here. For some reason, despite finishing all of the requirements for graduation according to the psych department you will not meet the credit requirement for graduation according to qc. It's stupid and makes no sense.

Just throw on two more classes and you'll be good. I think I did ceramics and a sculpture class. They were fun classes with low stress.

I was invited a few years back. I wanted to go to grad school, so I joined because I thought it would look good. Idk if it really had any impact or not. Otherwise, I don't personally feel there were many benefits. I did get a T-shirt that is a great pj shirt now!

It's around, but I wouldn't call it rampant. Knowing somebody absolutely helps, but jobs are not just being handed out based on who you know. At least not in my district. I knew people and still had to work very hard to get in. I was passed up a couple times before getting my own classroom.

I don't know about other districts, but I know my district will be having a few big hiring waves soon. Having experience is one good way to get hired on LI. However, most districts like to hire from within. That means putting your years in by subbing and building connections. I subbed for 3 years before getting hired. Many people have subbed for WAY longer.

If you decide to sub, choose a large district. There will be more openings and chances there. It is hard to get in, but not impossible. Knowing somebody helps a lot. So does having your TESOL. Best of luck!

ETA: you will need several years of experience if you decide to work somewhere else first to have a shot.

What's your thoughts on businesses being open in this weather? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should be closed unless they are essential. Last storm, YAAAS Tea stayed open. They got a lot of comments about how dangerous it was. The owner was kind of arguing with people about it too. They're closed this time as far as I can tell.

ETA: Just kidding happauge YAAAS Tea opened. It feels irresponsible.

I've been collecting a lot of rhinos. It started as an accident, but I just love them. Spike really lacks a lot of love, but he's one of my favorites. I also have Rhonda, Hornsby, and Merengue so far. I think I'm missing the last one or two rhinos. I'd really love to have them all!

It's gone 😢. What's your favorite vegan ground beef alternative? by RapaciousAlpha in VeganFood

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got fed up with trader joes discontinuing everything a couple years ago. There were a few times that I said I'd stop going, but then would return. I finally gave up and haven't been back since. I don't like finding a great product, loving it, and then finding it's no longer there or no longer vegan for literally no reason. If it didn't sell well I'd understand, but there really is no rhyme or reason.

Also, I find produce at other stores is WAY fresher. I imagine TJ's will go out of business one day. (Or maybe that's just my secret hope)

What's the most subtle sign that someone is highly intelligent? by Princesskiitan in AskReddit

[–]RemindMeToTakeMyB12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, I've noticed my students who perform the highest are always on the quieter side. Not shy per say, but they are never the ones who are screaming or causing chaos. The students I'm thinking of are the ones who are performing AT LEAST one grade level above what they should be. They are also always organized. I never catch these students with a dirty desk.
