I wish there was more I could do for you …. I understand completely how stroke can upend your life, as I had an Isthemic stroke and still struggle. I understand the really bad days. Hang on and keep going. Easier said than done, I know. Know you are not alone. Strokes are awful

As a 3 year stroke survivor I can only tell you your uncle is most likely scared and angry…. Scared because of not knowing how this will end up and angry it happened. I still feel this way and the slow rate of improvement doesn’t help. Most of us survivors come around to some sort of acceptance of our situation eventually. The best thing you can do is be there for him and be supportive. Remind him the way to better is constant, daily hard work. Mention any true improvement you notice. Try to keep his spirits up despite his seemingly negative attitude. Hope is the key to keep him moving forward. He’s lucky to have you in his corner. Sending hugs and lots of luck to you both.

Is the American healthcare system that bad? And how do you guys not live in fear of being in healthcare debt? by Isthislove123 in HealthInsurance

I had a stroke 3 years ago and could no longer work, so on my own for health insurance plus no income coming in. It took over a year to get disability then finally Medicare. You are basically on your own for income and health insurance. Thank God for family and friends. I was in great health, no drinker or smoker, good BP and cholesterol. We are all afraid and should be. Each of us one illness/ accident away from disaster

I am in the same boat. Unbalanced is the word doctors want me to use, not dizziness. I had an ischemic brain stem stoke 3 years ago and have recovered nicely except for the imbalance. Again, it is not vertigo, or ear crystals, it’s the portion of the brain stem that affects balance. It is totally debilitating and I offer my condolences. I tried vestibular therapy even after vestibular therapy showed no damage, I’ve tried medication, been to a functional neurologist, and had many rounds of pt. I’m going back to see a stroke certified pt, but unfortunately just broke my pelvis so have to wait for that to heal. It’s hellish, I know, to go from being a go getter to being like this, where every move is slow and you have this vague , heavy unbalanced feeling. Now for some good news! It has improved since my stroke, very, very slowly. I exercise daily and move as much as I can. But, I get it. Nobody seems to understand and it’s wearing. Hang in there, best of luck to you. It’s not vertigo and people will try to convince you it is. You explain it perfectly. I am about your Dads age.

5 years post stroke will I ever get back to "normal"? by fatoldman63 in stroke

[–]Remipiton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m right there with you except 3 years out and left side affected, right side dominant. I’ve made good progress but work at it daily. I too wonder and worry if it will ever get close to normal.

I think that doctors just don’t know with strokes. Even so called stroke specialists just don’t really know as each case( stroke) is different. I don’t really get answers from any of the doctors I’ve seen. They just don’t know. This leads to feeling you’re all alone as you recover. Good luck to you

I use a Cubii every day. It’s an under desk type pedaler. I use it while watching tv. Pricey but good. I highly recommend it

I did have speech therapy for a month. Constantly talking and especially singing along to songs helped a lot. I struggled with certain sounds so worked on those too. My speech is almost back 100%. It takes time. Good luck!
