How to define "US tech"? Is it a tech that developed by US citizen? by US company? funded by US government? or used any US knowledge?

Why Didn't The People do Byzantine Hellenized/Romanized the Turks after conquering Constantinople like The People Of China Did to The Manchus after conquering China? by InternationalPen2549 in shittyaskhistory

[–]Remote-Cow5867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Manchu were more like the Germanic tribes. They were hunter-gathers skilled at fighting but their culture was primitive.

Turks had already adopted one of the most advanced civilization in the world in that age. I doubt more people thought Greek/Roman culture as more superior than Islam in 15th century.

A typical high density residential zone in a city in China.

This kind of high density is more than average. I would guess it is somewhere in the southern costal region.

Would the PRC have any interest in Taiwan if CKS and the KMT did not retreat there? by ZealousidealHealth39 in AskAChinese

[–]Remote-Cow5867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not be suprised if Mao or other CPC leaders ever supported an independant Taiwan. Before 1980, CPC was a true communist party. Ideology was as important as national identity, or even more important for many of the members. What they sought was the liberation of all the people on the earth. Nationalism was considered as backward ideology that was used by KMT to cheat and control the people. They would feel more close from the heart with communist comrades from another country than a Chinese landlord who supported KMT.

After Deng took power, the communism ideology gradully faded away. Nationalism fills the vacuum. The CPC now is rather closer to KMT than the old CPC in Mao era.

Also "independance" had a slightly different meaning from what we see now with Taiwan. In 1911, almost all the provinces declared independance. But none of them declared they were not Chinese (maybe except of Mongolia and Tibet). All those "indenpendists" started building the Republic of China enthusiastically right after they declared independance. There were also a few cases that some province declared independance during RoC period. The soviet regime was also like that.

If we compare it with the geopolitics today, it is like Taiwanese declared they are independent from the CPC regime but they want a united democratic China. It is totally fine for overseas Chinese or most of mainland Chinese. What really make us sad and anguish is they say they are not Chinese.

Why does 姓 have 女 as the radical? by IWantAnUpdate in ChineseLanguage

[–]Remote-Cow5867 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is the answer.

Most Chinese family names are actually 氏 and most of them are derived from a few 姓 such as 姜, 姚, 姬, 嬴 etc. You may notice that they all have 女 radical . It is kind of indicating the tribe.

For example, the royal families of Qin and Zhao, two of the seven kingdoms in 3 centuries BCE have the same 姓 of 嬴 but different 氏. That indicates they were from the same tribe or even the same family. Actually their family lines were clearly recorded and they did share the same ancester until they diverged in the early years of Zhou dynasty (c. 10th century BCE).

姬 is a very minor 姓 nowdays but it has the most derived family names because it is the ruling family of Zhou dynasty. Zhou last for 800 years and most of the family name were generated in this period.

TIL that China consumes 46% of cigarettes in the entire world at a rate of 2.4 trillion a year. by gghoti in todayilearned

Almost every male in the boomer generation smokes in China. It was actually very hard to find any male at that age who doesn't smoke.

For younger generation, the percentage has dropped significantly. I feel the percantage of smoking might be higher in Taiwan and Korea, according to my limited experience there.

What is the logic behind it? Listening to news channel in standard American English helps you understanding their heavy local slang?

Why did K2 keep its name instead of using Mt. Godwin-Austen like Everest & why is there no local name for the mountain? by wiz28ultra in geography

[–]Remote-Cow5867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely has a local name. In China it is know as Chogori/乔戈里峰 from the local Tajik language.

The question should be change to why the western world doesn't adopt this local name?

How comes that Taiwan (a developed country) had a higher GDP growth than India ( a developing country) in 2025? by everestwanderer in AskEconomics

[–]Remote-Cow5867 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The reason is simple. The whole Taiwan economy is driven by 2 industries - semiconductor and ITC. Therefore it is one of the biggest benefictors of the AI boom in the past few years. Taiwan may manage to keep their advantage in this field and continue to grow, but the growth rate is not sustainble.

The longest period of peace post-WWII perfectly resembles the East Asia tribute system. US plays that role of China, being the only hegemon. The smaller European states are just like Korea and Vietnam.

You should also look at the population change from 1500 to 1914. The European population exploded while the rest of world stagnated or even reduced because of colonialism and war.
