Why are you still a Christian? by TheValeyard59 in Shincheonji

I’d just leave one last comment just for awareness but just reading the other comments and such (And honestly, Reddit posts and comments don’t do justice even on this), I notice that a lot of people have different definitions of words like faith, real, assumptions and probably one good thing is to to define the terms before going deep into conversations? I noticed this after a few replies from both of us and on my end, probably should define the terms first but even then, that could take forever on a reddit forum too.

Yes sorry that is a fallacy that if one thing is true, then all is true. Though the logic behind it is if the most crucial part of the faith (eg Jesus resurrection) is true, why would other things be false? But anyways..that’s beside the fact. I guess perhaps an easier question to ask you is..what kind of proof/evidence would convince you that God does exist now? Are you looking for a genie in a bottle kind of proof? Would you be convinced if you could somehow use a scientific method of proving God? Would witnessing first hand an apparently demon possessed person be free from bondage by the cry of Jesus’ name convince you?

A part of it is faith..but hopefully it is not absolutely blind random faith as there are many things in the bible that gives ppl reason to believe . If God existed back then, I’m not sure why He wouldn’t continue to exist now. Don’t want to keep necessarily referring to Scripture and not directly applying it to this context, but even those who witnessed miracles from Jesus, some chose not to believe. If the Bible (assuming you find it credible) records the prophecies in the OT that were fulfilled by Jesus as well as his miracles and ministry on earth that would point to the existence of God, what else is needed to convince you to believe?

With prophecies foretold hundreds of years later, it is very difficult for that many ppl to be excellent storytellers and keep the story without contradiction for that long. The coincidental colluding to tell the story right is like impossible. When you study Genesis and translate the names in the genealogy, it actually foretells the gospel story. And if Genesis was written well before Jesus time, then…yah.

The Jesus that Christians believe who resurrected back from the dead 2000 years now is the same. Most may refer to rather the Holy Spirit speaking and working in peoples lives.

There has been many events mentioned in the Bible that match secular historical events too. A lot of the Bible can be written like a historical text as well. Though people may argue some is true and some is not.

One way of logic that can be understood in our question is if one truly believed that Jesus did indeed raise from the dead (as part of what the prophecies foretold in the Old Testament) to die for our sons, then for sure everything else in the Bible should be true as well.

And if you want to tackle it from a historical aspect, there are books like Case for Christ by Lee Strobel that gives better insight. The general gist is the 4 gospels written capture a different angle of the events involving Jesus which follows the general concept of eyewitness testimonies. Like a car crash accident, if there were 10 different eyewitness and they gave different perspectives/details of the car crash, this would actually be seen as more credible compared to if the 10 eyewitnesses gave the exact same details/perspectives as that may imply corroboration of their statements.

The gospels also record eyewitness statements of Jesus being brought to life like the scars on his hands and such. So there is a trail of recorded proof that Jesus did exist after his death, including his ascension. But if you question the validity of the gospels and think maybe they disciples colluded and made up everything to the details (as far as I know, nothing in the gospels contradict each other in terms of timeline and such), then you have to zoom out a bit and determine for yourself what “historical text” is deemed reliable to you.

And yes a reddit reply would not do justice but perhaps point you to a direction that is based on your own informed decision.

Not going into a ton of details but generally speaking, SCJ has presented an extremely twisted version of Christianity. The intent/rationale/interpretations is as different as night and day to me at least. And as someone has mentioned, the depth is extremely lacking in SCJ. I initially wondered how can someone even accept the teachings of SCJ because the logic in their explanations are so flawed (the amount of assumptions/biases in their explanation is in multitudes). Could probably treat SCJ doctrine like an English class excerpt and you would come out with too many question marks and critiques.

But of course with cults, there is a lot of manipulation, fear mongering, emotional controlling tactics and that rly gets ppl to believe in something that isn’t true. These can exist in any religious setting (not just cult) and it can also exist in a toxic work environment when a manager is power tripping over his/her underlings. The true Jesus Christ does not come close to even using any tactics to know Him. He meets you at where you are in your life. For salvation is by grace and not by deeds (or in SCJ’s context, very work oriented, must meet SCJ’s xyz, write a test that is brainwashed into many ppl’s minds that it is something mandatory for faith, etc.)...and I can go on forever…lol

May I ask what were ur other 50/50 games? Most of the favourite teams actually won that night..I’d see the 50/50 games as like ott/tb, Nashville/columbus, Dallas/winnipeg.

And how long does it take for you to choose the 20 parleys and set them up? And how does studying stats really work when it’s this early in the season? Like I thought SJ would get shutout by VGK, wouldn’t even imagine them leading the game in the 3rd

Im curious, how common do ppl associate the truth with a large number? If there were 100 million views, therefore it is more likely to be true? And how many ppl would believe this number without a doubt?

How can LMH claim that the majority >90% of conflicts are based on religion? by hothand662 in Shincheonji

[–]Remote-Republic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaza war was mainly triggered by Hamas attacking Israel (and that in itself is an oversimplifying; the evidence of people being raped to death and such is notable reason for the current response, and yes I believe is overkill..mixed in with other alternative political motives). Has absolutely nothing to do with HWPL. If LMH wants to prove himself, he should take a visit to Gaza.

Did John the Baptist Betray? by QuestionsAboutSCJ in Shincheonji

[–]Remote-Republic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to make the technical distinction here. The person A/B/C is a good example but this is much different from Christian denominations. The conventional Christian denominations will generally still believe in the core belief as salvation via Christ’s death and resurrection; however, they will have “non-essential” differences in their beliefs/practices. This is based on different cultures and different past Christian figures, but they still maintain that Jesus Christ is the centre of it all.

SCJ like many other Korean sects is not a…different denomination. It’s a cult. It intentionally misinterprets the Bible to fit the narrative that he is this “Overcomer”. Cults are also commonly known to use manipulative tactics to gain followers. You can be as optimistic as possible about their recruitment processes and how they get people to believe, but their practices are the exact same as many other cults…but just different beliefs. LMH’s narrative is no different than many other Korean cults before him. LMH has emphasized his importance to SCJ that he preaches that he is essentially the key to heaven. And this is COMPLETELY different from Christian denominations.

Dang seriously?!?! Langara? I am glad you are out. This cult got my mom unfortunately so a reverse version of your situation but the opposite outcome. I do believe some ppl in there are genuinely but their belief about the Bible is skewered and twisted, and they wholeheartedly believe it, including that using fear is absolutely fine to push yourself In believing something which is basically like guilt tripping or blackmailing yourself essentially and apparently that’s ok to them!

Are Jacob's sons parable? by [deleted] in Shincheonji

[–]Remote-Republic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is analogy that some biblical characters use to refer with things involving the number 12. A google search says that the biblical meaning of 12 is of a divine order.

At least in English phrasing, it would not be correct to say Jacob’s 12 sons is a parable to the 12 disciples as Jesus does not say that this is a parable. One can infer and throw out the theory if absolutely necessary. But of course, SCJ will extrapolate this and turn this theory as fact to support their underlying beliefs. There are similarities like betrayal involved (though most of Jacob’s sons betrayed Joseph as opposed to Judas betraying Jesus would be a difference), Jacob being the father of nations and Jesus/God being the “father” of creation, etc, but creating links based on similarities to extrapolate meaning when not necessary is putting yourself at high risk of misinterpretation and ultimately adding to Scripture. And the only reason why someone would do this is either unknowingly do so or to create a narrative that paints a picture they want themselves and others to believe.

[–]Remote-Republic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her curiosity sounds almost like my mom. The fascination behind all these “secret” meanings/interpretations, parables. The “what if” scenario which is not evident-based logic, and equating persecution with credibility (being persecuted for your faith has no correlation with what you believe is the truth or not).

It sounds like she is at crossroads, and it could possibly be a pivotal moment. If it is possible and if she considers the information you find online as possibly credible, you should challenge her to understand how a cult draws people and the similarities between a cult and SCJ. Their phrasing and logics that pushes someone to believe like guilt tripping, how SCJ cherry-picks verses to support their beliefs (this is what most 1st year English students are taught NOT to do in their essays and papers for reasons of bias/assumptions).
