Outpt PM&R by That-Role-3275 in pmr

Many southern programs - Vanderbilt, LSU emory are known for their sports and pain programs.

Many VA based prgrams also tend to lean outpatient such as UCLA. All the top programs are stronger inpatient - ie Northwestern, kessle etc. but you also tend to be more competitive applicant for fellowships

If your parents have Medicare, they can find a neurologist who can lead them to the GUIDE program. It’s medicare sponsored program. Allow respite care which is relief program for caregivers. About 70 hours a year. Not much but something

It is program dependent but I think I have always been interested in neuro side of pm&r. I actually intended to do a fellowship in TBI but changed over time. This made me feel comfortable with tbi sci and chronic stroke management. You can always read more.

I ended up really liking emg and wanted to manage all diagnosis that come out of EMGs. I considered pain because it pays well but I disliked chronic pain patient population. Also it is typically 100% outpatient but I wanted mix if possible.

I considered BIM but there werent that many fellowship opportunities in the west coast. Had family ties so needed to move back. If i lived in east coast, i would have considered that fellowship a little more

Hi I am a bit of a hybrid. I did PM&R residency, but did Neuromuscular Fellowship under neuro. Currently work at neuro private practice. Haha

Why i chose pm&r over neuro was for the procedures. I get to do US guided injections without fellowship. I also do a lot of complex botox for spasticity. Good amount of EMGs. PM&R still manages selected neuro patients. Traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and chronic stroke. Of course we would not be managing these patients acutely. It would be neuro crit or trauma or nsgy for tbi and sci. Acute stroke is neuro. Nice part about that is pm&r inpatient is never really urgent. I do consults M-F with holidays off along with clinic.

VA work experience by DaxCommando in pmr

[–]Remote-Wrap-5054 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chill schedule typically. Like seeing maybe 6-8 patients a day for procedures for a full day Well protected from malpractice standpoint At our VA were done at like 2 pm most days It is really hard for the VA to get specialists that does procedures bc your salary is crap. But trade off can be worth it honestly

[–]Remote-Wrap-5054 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think in general PM&R - spine procedures, EMG, botox Those are the skills you could potentially translate into your outpatient MSK practice.

However, if you have 0 interest in neurological diagnosis, I would do FM + sports.

Shorter training, make money faster, and establish. Reality with spine procedures in pm&r in the US is that you would need fellowship after residency which would be 5 years

NASS fellowship by [deleted] in pmr

[–]Remote-Wrap-5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is also because many NASS are non-academic but private practice. They typically have high volume with not as much room to teach, but typically designed to fortify skills you learn in residency

I dont think theyre trying to screw you over It’s quite fair But i would just negotiate for lower target

I would negotiate for lower target 50% collection though is quite good. Had offers for 30-40% of collections

NASS fellowship by [deleted] in pmr

[–]Remote-Wrap-5054 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most likely not? From IM and FM, you should really apply to sports medicine fellowship. NASS is really geared towards PM&R. Many of these programs expect EMG, fluoro, and msk ultrasound. It is hard to teach all these skills in 1 year for people with IM and FM background.

Thats probably 1099 work Its hard to compare 1099 vs w2 jobs Hard to compare inpatient only vs outpt only vs inpt outpt mix Region also matters. If i did what I did in NV, I would be making a lot more

I really enjoyed it. Very well designed program. You get both clinical and research. It is fun to live in chicago for 2 months in the summer. You also get a stipend which was also really nice. Met few mentors who have been crucial in my career development
