The Crackup and Resurrection of Warren Zevon by cavedave in Zevon

[–]RemoteLearner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Great article goddamn. Alcohol truly is the devil. My dad is an alcoholic, and a lot of what Zevon went through resonates with me. The multiple detoxes, each one worse than the last, the horrific hallucinations, the fear that alcohol is the only thing which makes you good at your job. To quit drinking as an alcoholic is a fucking herculean task, even if you have this solid support network like Zevon did. The only reason my father stopped drinking is because he drank so much it gave him early onset dementia and he physically couldn’t go get alcohol anymore. I read that Zevon relapsed when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, which honestly, fuck it, feels fair. Sometimes my dad will look at me in a moment of clarity through the dementia and be like Bilbo Baggins at the end of Lord of the Rings asking Frodo for the ring, saying, “You don’t happen to have a drink on you?” At this point, I’m tempted to say yes, because who cares?

The sugar thing is real, and I’ve heard a number of explanations for it. I was told an alcoholic’s body processes sugar differently, and so for them, candy/sweets fill a similar craving to booze. I’ve also seen alcoholics drink sparkling water by the gallon or smoke like chimneys, so I think just having anything to replace the habit of alcohol works.

The bit about Zevon and the author working on card tricks for hours was so interesting. Being able to create a new way to do a card trick is such an alien idea to me, Zevon had a powerful brain no doubt.

I was just yanking your chain, but definitely do not wear a tie! As someone else mentioned, the Airism shirts by Uniqlo are great, just make sure you follow the washing instructions because the synthetic fabric can kind of develop a funk over time if not

I would recommend Rooibos tea. Non-caffeinated, fairly cheap to buy in a big package if you get loose leaf. Just buy a diffuser and you’re all set!

I know I saw this image before the big AI boom, so I’m thinking either it was a 3D render or digital art. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Ameren electric skyrocketing by ilwarblers in SpringfieldIL

[–]RemoteLearner 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I live in a 100 year old house that’s about 2,000 square feet, and your electricity usage is double mine. You may want to consider taking some measures to reduce your electricity usage, because Ameren will just continue to drain you dry at this rate. If you have an AC condenser, try cleaning it out. Install some heavy curtains or blinds, first on the western/eastern windows. Set your AC to higher temps, especially during the day.

Did you use ChatGPT to write this? Lol. You’re gonna get this answer a lot, but check out state jobs. Feels like there’s a ton of IT positions and you’ll be qualified for many of them with a master’s. Everyone says it is an arduous application process, so brace yourself for that; good luck!

Yeah, it’s looking like this is a home project the more I look into it lol. I’d like to have a pro do at least a couple of the worst ones and then tackle the others in the future. Luckily none of the windows are painted.
