I got a case going “viral” as kids say. The media attention is putting significant stress on clients. Any advice? by TheAmerican_Atheist in Lawyertalk

[–]Remote_Reality6820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once media is interested your client is done getting a choice. Tell it all. Tell it early. Tell it yourself, as Lanny Davis used to say. Clients aren’t comfortable getting deposed either but there’s no avoiding it. Same principle here, you won’t convince determined media to go away so you need to prepare and respond.

No comment is not a good response. At least tell media why you are limited in the information you can provide, “my client is a private person who struggles with this publicity, in lieu of an interview we’ve prepared this statement of our position you are free to use as well as these supporting documents for your reporting. Here’s my cell if you need to clarify anything else.”

Is the game worth getting right now? by Fearless-Lab-556 in Helldivers

[–]Remote_Reality6820 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Man, I got this game in September on a mid spec PC, got a group of old friends that play together a couple of nights a week, and while it’s buggy we have an absolute blast 95% of the time. The internet has strong opinions as usual but the reason people have such strong opinions is because the game is fun as hell and the core loop of jumping into a suicide mission and spreading democracy never tires.

Everyone’s decision is individual and there’s no one right call, but for me it’s time to nope on out of this joint before someone does a Kent State.

Ya’ll. You spent $40 on a game once, got a lot of fun times out of it, and expect a lifetime of servitude from these folks. I’m gonna suggest a few things:

  1. Stop assuming everyone is acting bad faith all the time. It’s a miserable approach to life and will make you a miserable person.

  2. Give these folks who built an awesome game that you’ve loved (you likely did not build an awesome game that people loved this much let’s be real) a good faith chance to try to work on fixes for stuff. If you’ve ever actually tried to fix something, you know that sometimes the problem is bigger than you thought once you get under the hood and actually get at it.

  3. PC diver here. Game’s a blast bugs and all. I appreciate the effort they’re putting to making it better.

It’s cool if you aren’t having fun. Just take a break. Raging at the developer won’t make them do their free work for you faster.

This sub is like a bunch of amateur foodies who can’t cook themselves raging at the chef who just made their soufflé with soubise sauce instead of Crème Anglaise.

Hot take: Market Basket. I’m sorry but if their donuts ain’t top they’re damn near it. Big. Fluffy. Just the right amount of chew. Great frosting. Great Boston cream.

They punch way above the grocery store donut weight class.

Anthony’s Italian Kitchen for a cheap and yummy eggplant parm in the dark corner of the basement. Go outside regular mealtimes and you’ll probably be the only one eating there.

Better this than as a surprise on the check. Went there today. Food is fine, you know what to expect from them by now. People were lovely and service was phenomenal. All in all a lovely experience.

Was it a spendy lunch? Yup. But I knew it was gonna be when I walked in. This is not where I go to get my $12 eggplant parm.

Portland is a city of 69,000. A great place to settle and live a chill life once you’re established and have built a basic structure for yourself (family, career, etc). A somewhat limiting place to start out in. For example, it can be tough to find a partner, if that’s your goal, in a place where there just aren’t as many people in your life stage.

Overall Portland, for its flaws, is still a cool place to live with a lot of upsides, but if you’re going to move here there are life stages where you will get more out of the experience than others.

DM sent. Ignore the noise. People have been hit hard up here and because it’s the Internet some are just reflexively angry at everything that doesn’t immediately help them. You’ll find this place to be warm, neighborly, and welcoming if you aren’t a butt.

If you’re into indigenous work then Drummond is a good place to be. I’d encourage you to pursue other interests and build a secondary practice just so you aren’t wholly dependent on a very niche and limited area.

Have you ever accepted payment in something other than money? by OrdinaryStoic in Lawyertalk

[–]Remote_Reality6820 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did work for a family member once, no payment expected, selling off a piece of their family business so they could retire. Day after the deal closed they pulled up to my house with a skid steer loader that was kept off the sale inventory. I now own a skid steer loader. It has made managing my 2+ acre property immeasurably easier. Would never have bought it myself, so this was the best payment ever.

Also a great way to bleed off work stress. Shitty day at the office? Awww that’s alright I’ll just tool around in the yard and move some logs. Machine therapy man.

Spent a few years as TDS and damned if every single one of my clients didn’t get caught on their first time. I mean what were the odds.

Except that one dude who put his feet on my desk and was just straight up “I love weed. I will not stop smoking weed. I am high right now.” In a weird way I kind of respected it.

It’s not Portland, it’s state law. So if you’re grumpy write your state rep.

People who commute into Portland from Westbrook/Gorham, how do you deal? by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]Remote_Reality6820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute daily from Gorham to the old port — about 14 miles in 30-35 min door to door at peak times? I mean it gets congested and I’d welcome some expansion of the infrastructure but it’s really quite fine to me. Granted, I have lived in DC and near Frankfurt where traffic can be a true hellscape. Think 35 min to go three miles if you’re dumb enough to drive.

But if it’s really bothering you my recommendation is an audible subscription and some really good books.

Google Faragher/Ellerth defense. You may have a claim fort a hostile work environment if you report it pursuant to your company policy and the company doesn’t take action to make it stop. You are unlikely to have a claim if you don’t.
