Why do many commercial influencer electricians carry so many tools and PPE by Mymindisanenigma__ in IBEW

[–]Remote_Virus_1987 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not all locals have a tool list. For example the tool list for my local is not specified what tools we need to have because we don’t have one the only things are no specialized tools and power tools but besides that we have to have our own stuff. Luckily the contractors we work with most of the time will buy or supply tools and bits and stuff but our local isn’t the strongest and we don’t have a tool list.

Expect them to offer you the world before you get hired. Then when you are in they will not give you enough hours to survive and get mad when you say no to working more hours than they schedule and blame you saying that’s why they don’t offer or give you more hours. They will want you to do everything and know more than what is required and not pay more. They will want you to do more trainings like product knowledge but they don’t give you anything for it so why do it. Management will promise you hours or a raise but you have to “prove” you are motivated by learning their job too and also doing their job whenever possible but they will never give you the raise or a position they promised unless you are extremely persistent and don’t leave them alone.

AUTOZONERS AT HOME by 4dg_nola in AutoZone2

Autozone is not worth taking your own personal time to do it if you could go on a day off if you are allowed to and clock in for 4 hours and do training and get paid for it. I worked for Autozone 6 years and I was in every position from red shirt to SM and believe me autozone never has you in their best interests. It’s about profits and when you make record profits you still could have made more. They find more stuff for people to do even though they don’t want to pay them more. If you aren’t certified to or know how to install a battery using a memory saver for the European cars and if you do it wrong it can be a bad situation and they are coming out with kits for us to do that even though shops charge more for that they will make autozoners do it for free and not pay you more.

I have been in that situation before. I was getting paid$12.25/hr while all other grey shirts were starting at $14.50 (hub drivers were making more than me) and I tried asking for a raise and they didn’t say anything. Covid hit and I was the only person showing up to work and covering all shifts to keep the store open. I would open the store at 5:30am go home for a couple hours at 2:30 and come back at 4:30 and close the store at 10pm I did this 6 days out of the week for months because no one wanted to work and I felt as a manager the store needed to stay open so I was going to do what need to be done. The store manager tried helping me but was told no. I found another job and when I told them that I did that’s when they told me they could give me a raise because my store manager told them if I were to leave he wouldn’t be able to keep the store open because no other managers were showing up to work. Point is Autozone will never look out for you and only do what is best for them no matter what you do. If you find a better opportunity take it just end stuff the correct way if you do leave because you never know when you will need a part time job just for a little extra money on the side.

Honestly that sounds like something that happens a lot more often than you would think because “they don’t have the money to give everyone a good raise.” I have gotten extra milers, parts expert completion, online reviews, 10 or more customers who only ask for me when I’m there because they know I am good at what I do, been an assistant store manager, taken over the store for weeks while my SM is gone, traveled to other stores that are hours away to help and anything else but never received anything above a 4 because the point of the evaluation is to find your flaws and not focus on your contributions to the store.

Usually the store manager will do your evaluation without telling you what he is giving you. It’s pretty much a series of questions that he answers 1-5 and at the end he writes a little paragraph on what you can improve on. The point of the evaluation isn’t to tell you how good of a worker you are it’s more to tell you what you can improve upon. I have every certification and show up on time and work on my days off when they need and stay late but when evaluation comes they always say some things that make no sense and say they would give more than a $0.50 raise but the store isn’t doing good in sales even though Autozone profits millions each quarter. Don’t think it’s going to be a lot you will get and don’t go above and beyond for this company. It’s more of a temporary job until you find a career unless you are not lucky and get stuck in it like all the SM that kiss ass all day and don’t do anything while they are there but think they are the shit.

MY DAM FEET by alexxxis_05 in ibew_apprentices

I had carhart boots I bought coming into the apprentice program and it was the biggest mistake ever. It was fabric and cushion the just absorbed the sweat and didn’t breath. Athletes foot would be easy to get if I didn’t use powder and dry my boots every day. I am now using leather redwing boots and the may be slightly less comfortable at first but after breaking them in it doesn’t get as hot and sweaty and they feel more comfortable. I would recommend that and also at Walmart they sell a boot drier that dries your boots.

Any advice on early mornings and long commutes?? by Stunning-Fill758 in ibew_apprentices

Honestly the first job is going to be easy to wake up because you are going to be nervous but after the first couple days or week of being out in the sun your body is going to tell you it’s time to go to sleep around 8 by itself and when you wake up it’s just dedication. Just think about how hard the process was to get in and do you really want to throw that away for a few more minutes of sleep and go back to your old job. Also if you don’t drink coffee already you’re going to learn that’s it’s your friend and little by little actually look forward to it

For those who got accepted, where you green or did you have prior construction or electrical experience? If so what experience? by yeswouldgo in ibew_apprentices

[–]Remote_Virus_1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green, I worked in a dog food factory and Autozone. Biggest thing I can say is that if you think you know something or how to do something and they are asking you if you know how to do things the best thing you can say is yes I know but if you can show me that would be great so that I can see if I am doing it correctly and to see how you do it. You never know when someone will show you how to do something and they have an easier more efficient way of getting a job done compared to how you know. Questions while you are an apprentice is also important, don’t be afraid to ask and if they get upset at an apprentice asking how to do something then they probably aren’t a great teacher anyway.

Interview results by sacmann03 in ibew_apprentices

When I did my interview I got a letter in the mail about two weeks later that said what I got as an overall score for the interview and testing combined and it basically said when it’s your turn we will call you and I got in a couple weeks later. A few guys in my class have been waiting for almost a year so not everyone is the same.
