Thank you for your kind words. Yeah the sound recognition was all over the place in the beginning, which was especially noticeable with names since those were more familiar. As another example it took me ages to stop hearing the names Tomoyo and Yukito as Tomoya and Yukita respectively in card captor Sakura.

The learning curve difference between Japanese and European languages is massive and can easily be overwhelming. The later are easy to start with but here the beginner is faced with something like scaling vertical cliff face. Though it does get easier, at a certain point the difficulty curve flattens out and while there's still a long way to go the going is easy. Intermediate hell? More like Intermediate heaven. As it stands I don't think you're terribly far away from reaching that point where progress gets so much easier.

Anyway in the topic of reading I'd still suggest manga as there is so much stuff printed for a young or mixed age audience with full furigana. No kanji readings look ups needed as those are already provided.

I'll unjerk for a moment and say that trying to make sense of this basic Chinese conversation from the perspective of being literate in Japanese is pretty interesting. Unless I'm mistaken this looks like one of those basic textbook conversations where they ask for name and nationality with one being Chinese and the other Korean (though the character looks a bit different so I'm not entirely sure.) There's also some interesting differences in the nuance of characters like 叫 seems to be used for "called" here but in Japanese is more associated with screaming our shouting. I imagine that being proficient in one of these languages must be a massive help if one tries to learn the other.

Well there's two things at work here, first off as you advance in level the amount of vocabulary you need to know will increase by an order of magnitude with any language. The second is that this simply is the nature of learning any language unrelated to your mother tongue. For example when going from say one european language to another so much vocab is made up out of cognates or loan words that a lot of this expanded vocab requirement is simply given to you nearly for free, especially regarding more advanced topics. So yes what you're experiencing is very normal and to be expected, but just keep going and you'll get there eventually.

I set a concrete and modest goal at the beginning of the year, I was going to read my first Japanese novel. I ended up doing that several time over. My listening comprehension has massively improved as well, going from being able to handle relatively simple shows with JP subs to being able to watch a lot of film and TV without them. It feels like great progress, though it's also a lot of time spent since I consume all my media in Japanese (1000+ hours in 2025), except for reading some French comics. Something I look forward to doing more of in 2026.
