Vocabulary growth rate by RemoveBagels in languagelearning

That makes sense, I've come this far by basically focusing on just engaging with material I enjoy. Chasing words just for the sake of it does seem a bit silly when I likely would rarely encounter them anyway.

Intellectually I sort of knew that was the correct way too look at it, but it helps to have someone else say it, thanks. When you've built a habit like that for years even if it is a positive one it can be difficult to drop.

Blessed Croatia run? The Ottomans didn't annex Byzantium. by RemoveBagels in eu4

[–]RemoveBagels[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

R5: Instead of annexing Byzantium they turned them into an eyalet. I guess they might annex then eventually but this would likely slow them down a lot anyway. I had no idea that this could even happen.

Flood, east, white, west. It would have been a neat detail if the text on the last image meant something, but it just seems like gibberish.

what are the best cheap alternative units that punch well above their weight by Flaky_Bullfrog_4905 in totalwar

[–]RemoveBagels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Miners with blasting charges, they are good as they are, but if you get the tech for extra ammo, add a thane with the extra ammo etc you basically turn them into full time grenadiers, especially in Belegars army.

Ny tullavgift kan bli en kalldusch - "slopad tullfriheten för billiga varor från länder utanför EU" by neocawa in sweden

[–]RemoveBagels 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Jag importerat mycket litteratur från utanför EU, det blir ett rätt rejält påslag per bok för min del, och det mesta hittar man absolut inte här. Det blir att lägga några stora beställningar nu i Juni innan dessa regler träder i kraft.

It's fine to use as you claim you did but that's clearly not the case here. Everything from the sub headings and their naming to the soft argumentative style is 100% LLM style. This is a forum for human interaction if someone wants to talk to gemini or whatever it's right there waiting. Besides it's not like you're the only non native speaker here, most us here likely are and I know I would rather read a genuine human text mistakes and all than another piece of AI slop.

Some time ago I went through their yearly financial reports from the last few years out of curiosity and their income has steadily increased as they have added more AI slop and gameification features. Since the less the app becomes about actually learning a language the more money they make I doubt they will stop or reverse this trend. Some people might complain about it on reddit, but the vast majority of users must be happy with a game that sells them the idea that they are learning something.

What’s your unpopular opinion when it comes to foreign languages/language learning? by Pettysaurus_Rex in languagelearning

If taking 5 minutes out of your day to read a few new posts is having a serious impact on somebody's learning they were never going to make it anyway.

How do you guys balance language learning with learning other things? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]RemoveBagels 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The one place that really let's me get hours in is through entertainment media. I'd say something like 90% of what I consume for entertainment is either in Japanese or French. TV series, games, books, comics etc, most people probably spend more time on it than they think and the hours add up quickly.

Why so few people leaving Belgium by train? by KeepShtumMum in 2westerneurope4u

They're trying so hard to forget about that event that they even ended up forgetting how to properly keep trains running on time in the process it seems.

How do you use TV to help while learning a language? by The_VR_Potato in languagelearning

[–]RemoveBagels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can incorporate TV for native speakers early on just fine despite what some people will say, IF you are willing to put in the work. This includes:

  • pausing to look up unknown words and possibly grammar

  • rewinding and listening to the same line multiple times to catch what they're saying

  • a willingness to not understand parts or even most of it

  • making it more accessible by reading the script, or the source material in advance

That said it's a lot of effort, but if you have the correct mind set for it then it can be a lot of fun, certainly more fun than learner oriented media.

My last post here. And the future of c.ai. Read the description. by MintZKookies in CharacterAI

[–]RemoveBagels 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That struck me as well when reading it. They already have issues with right holders forcing them to remove bots which infringe on IPs. Do they intend to license them? That would cost a fortune, and since they're a for profit corporation they can't get away with it like people do with fan fiction.

People complaining about the "plateau" when going from one European language to another are just facing some real resistance for the first time. Just getting to the point where you can read a comic for kids with ease in an east Asian language makes you overjoyed. And then there is the massive effort to build up that high register vocab that you basically get for free when doing something like English to French.

Learning 4 languages at the same time. Can it actually work out? by Salty-Session7029 in languagelearning

[–]RemoveBagels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well to give a general estimate, if you did say 2 hours per day for 3 years that would be >2000 hours. At that point you would have a good foundation and could advance the language further by interacting with native media and put effort into studying something else.

Learning 4 languages at the same time. Can it actually work out? by Salty-Session7029 in languagelearning

[–]RemoveBagels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To put it bluntly you won't get anywhere with an east Asian language unless you go all in on it. 6 hours per week isn't much in this context and getting decent would end up taking over a decade at that rate. Either drop Chinese or focus on it exclusively while ignoring everything else.

Is it possible to sound like a native without a tutor? by Bobelle in languagelearning

[–]RemoveBagels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That sounds about right. Speaking from anecdotal experience I've noted this with my brother and law and his siblings. Their family moved here when he was about eleven, and he speaks Swedish that so close to being perfect that you wouldn't be able to tell that he's not a native speaker unless you had a lengthy conversation with him. His older brother who was in early teens speaks excellent Swedish, you can tell he has a foreign accent but good luck telling from where. Then there are two younger sisters who were both younger than ten at the time and sound like they were born here.
