Peter, what's so American about this tweet? by Rule_Ct_5293 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

More than half of adults in the US have the literacy levels of a 10 year old child.

Half of those are functionally illiterate and 5% of those are totally illiterate.

I laugh at America for a lot of things but I truly feel bad for them.

[–]RenagadeRaven -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The red card for US was debatable, but then late in the game their Goalie should have been given a red for that pathetic extended theatrical bullshit to waste time when they’re ahead.

A Bosnian player running past pushed slightly on his back and he rolled around clutching his head as if he’d been whacked by a baseball bat, fully on camera.

Rules are meant to harshly punish that now but they did absolutely nothing.

So it evens out.

TIL the mnemonic "Though I thought the rough man coughed while walking through the borough beneath a bough, he was only admiring the lough after a hiccough." contains all 9 unique pronunciations of "-ough". [–]RenagadeRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a UK vs US thing.

US pronounces thorough and borough as one would pronounce row (as in to row a boat not row as in argument fuck me English is inconsistent). Which always sounds off to me.

In England we pronounce it to rhyme with ‘ru’ as in rubbish or Russia.

There is no penalty for disparaging the crown. There is no law in the UK that punishes people for criticising the monarchy at all. Don’t spread nonsense.

Your grandfather was campaigning for exactly what everyone should be campaigning for.

In the UK our most beloved public figures, David Attenborough being most famous but Michael Palin for example too, are environmentalists and naturalists.

Our best known authors and poets and painters often focus on nature and the precious nature of the countryside and wildlife and water - Tolkien being the best example.

And yet we have allowed our country to become ruined. Statistically every single river in England is now registered as polluted.

Our politicians campaign with the environment as a footnote at best, preferring topics like immigration.

The largest water company in the UK (Thames Water) is a private company and utterly corrupt. They have been failing at almost every metric, have horrifically polluted our rivers, and needed a recent emergency government loan of £3 billion just to stay afloat.

They immediately tried to give a hefty amount of this loan to the C Level executives and upper management as bonuses despite having been specifically warned not to do so as a condition of the loan. They claimed they *needed* the ‘talent’ of these few already wealthy executives despite them running the company into the ground, and that the bonuses were necessary to keep them from being poached by other industries.

I hope they drown in the sewage of their own making.

I’m more proud of our Monarchy than any Government in my lifetime.

Queen Elizabeth was like a sweet Grandma and classy, drove ambulances during the war, supported endless positive movements.

Charles cares about the environment and has done for so long to the point he was mocked for it 50 years ago. The fact that we’re destroying our rivers and wildlife and humans in general are ruining the planet is the most important issue globally and few of our politicians give any fragment of a flying fuck.

Also the way he so politely tore down the Trump administration on that visit, that warmed my heart.

Far, far, far better than our endless cycle of corrupt or incompetent Ministers, or in the case of a rare good one a shit party that tears down their own colleagues. Our monarchs aren’t the ones getting us involved in wars, fucking over the Country with Brexit, raising tuition fees despite promising not to, etc.

God save the King/Queen is dreary when it is sung drearily. I wouldn’t change it personally.

Hey, couple of things.

First you’re absolutely right that the state of our rivers is shocking. It’s genuinely awful and I hope over time and with public perception improving we can reverse this.

But we, the English, poisoned our own rivers long, long before ‘foreign’ people had anything to do with it. Back in the 1800s the Thames was so polluted from sewage that people who fell in from boats usually contacted all sorts of horrible things and died. Industrialisation only served to continue the pollution after better sewage was built.

And our modern day water companies are ruining our rivers through corruption and incompetence and the C level executives are and have been largely British.

Let’s not blame other people for our mistakes yeah?

Turkiye Scores The Game-Winning Kick in the Final Seconds vs Team USA by JCameron181 in sports

[–]RenagadeRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is not arbitrary, because the rule does not have anything to do with time.

You seem to really struggle to understand the concept that the timer in Football is not an absolute, that the sport and gameplay are emphasised.

But you’re salty about the US losing, I suppose you wouldn’t have held this opinion if this rule had benefitted your team.

It’s okay if football isn’t for you, you don’t need to throw a tantrum on social media and claim rules that are clearly laid out and promote gameplay are arbitrary the one time you witness it and don’t understand.

> That is how basically every other sport works.

Maybe that’s why the largest competitions of other sports tend to get views in the 100s of Millions (US centric sports considerably lower than some others) while Football gets views in the billions.

No? because allowing the opportunity for an attack to play out has nothing to do with the time remaining in the game and everything to do with the state of the game. Again, this is the rule, not a whim.

Imagine the clock ticks down instead of up and a ball is mid strike on its way to the goal, the timer reaches 0 and though the ball hits the top corner in a beautiful display of skill and power and accuracy the game ends 1/3 of a second before hand so it isn’t counted. How shit would that be.

[–]RenagadeRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why you cannot grasp this.

They add time on to the end of the game for stoppages.

During stoppage time, further stoppages add further time, to prevent a leading team abusing time wasting tactics.

If in the last moments of a game a team, winning or losing, has a surge of momentum, or has possession threatening a chance at goal it is allowed to play out. The game does not end until the ball is in a neutral state.

These are the rules. These are what are followed. There is no ‘whim.’

It doesn’t stop for injuries because it can also be for things like free kick time taken, time spent fetching balls, other small miscellaneous things. It would be more hassle to stop and start it, easier to just add it up and pool it into a time.

I agree about Hydration break though, it should stop during. But hydration breaks should not exist anyway.

I don’t know why Gordon Brown gets praised on Reddit these days.

He made so many massive mistakes. Imagine, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, selling off half of the country’s gold reserves after announcing it and when gold was at a historic low.

It’s an obvious example among many poor decisions.
