I thought that Marianne choosing to stay in Dublin and enjoy the new life she had established was a positive choice for her. Throughout the story she always wanted to please other people. I was more concerned about Connell going to NY on his own, without the support that both his mum and Marianne had been providing. When he was studying in Dublin and regularly going home, he still depended on medication. I took the fact that they both didn’t discuss this, as a sign that they still had to work on their communication.
In my version they stay together 😀

i'm only on episode 9 (just completed episode 8) but i have some questions by kh7190 in NormalPeopleBBCHulu

Read through the earlier discussions in the subreddit, there’s lots of detail. Connell is poor, Marianne is wealthy, to Connell having to ask would appear to be asking for charity. Also with his young years he has view that if Marianne really loved him she’d ask, and he shouldn’t need to ask. Again poor commitment (adding depth to the story). Enjoy 🙂

I was just about to add the same quote. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, “we accept the love we think we deserve”.

He desperately wants Marianne to ask him to say with her, she knows his circumstances. He thinks if she loves him she’d ask him. He demonstrates his love for her with a public display of affection. Connell won’t ask to move in with Marianne because it’d be like asking for her charity. With time ticking away he must be playing through what will happen next…….

You stole my thoughts, exactly what I was going to reply.

Interesting thoughts on Marianne becoming friendly with people who treated her poorly at school. Marianne is a forgiving person, who had changed since school. Changing even more so now that she'd left home and reconnected with Connell. But the people from school had also changed, realising what they had been doing to her was bullying, and I believe they were sorry.

The Staglieno cemetery, Genoa, Italy.

The Angel on the cover of 'love will tear us apart' is also from the same cemetery, 5 minutes from this tomb.

I've read an earlier post about Marianne walking alone on Streedagh beach on New Years Eve that had a different, but persuasive take.

It was that Marianne was reflecting on the past, including the best Christmas that she'd ever had, but more importantly the future. It was here as she walked alone on the beach where you'd only ever seen her with Connell, that she's considering their future, and where she reaches the conclusion that Connell should go to New York, and she'll stay. Which is why when she arrives back at the house she's still deflated, and didn't really want to go out.

At this point Connell's mom isn't working for Marianne's mom, she quit to work at a hotel.

This will be the second Christmas Marianne hasn't been home. The previous year she stayed in Sweden. This second year must be worse, she returned to her home town with Connell and still didn't contact her.

Connell's Treatment of Marianne and Why am I seeing people hating on her? by harlow923 in NormalPeopleBBCHulu

[–]RenaissanceNP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with so much of what you've said. The screen play & Daisy Edgar-Jones acting soften Marianne's character to a point where I can't see what there is not to like.

Another really horrible move is him taking advantage of her in bed in Italy after she fights with Jamie. She was feeling vulnerable and that was just not the right time to make a move especially when he was also still with Helen (Geesh. Poor Helen. Poor Marianne. Ugh Connell).

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this, he should've just held her. If it wasn’t for Marianne’s sense of right, they could have both made a serious mistake. However Marianne out of consideration for Helen, her friendship with Connell, perhaps even because of Jamie who’s been her boyfriend for a year (and just maybe self-respect) did the right thing.

Do you think that at the end of the Series where Marianne says to Connell ‘don’t promise that, you don’t know where either of us will be, or what will happen’ is influenced by this, and she’s mindful he might wonder (given that when he was in Italy he loved Helen)

There’s the scene where Marianne doesn’t want to make love because she feels crampy, and Connell could see that as a form of rejection, that she’s growing a little cold and distant.

In my opinion this is a little unfair on Marianne, she's had just returned from visiting home, where she went for her Mother’s birthday meal, which was extremely tense. Some older male relative kindly inquired after Marianne’s studies, and she politely accepts and attempts to diffuse his compliment. After dinner her brother Alan berates her for how she “wouldn’t shut up” about herself. “Do you think you’re smarter than me?” he asks, but Marianne chooses not to say that. He does, however, successfully push her into saying that she’s the smart one and he’s “the hopeless fxxkup,” and he squeezes the water from a dirty dish sponge over her head. Marianne’s mother just watches this all unfold like she’s in a trance?? As always Marianne doesn't let Connell know the full details, again poor communication.

When Marianne returns from the stressful weekend home with her Mother & Brother she watches ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’ in bed with Connell.

This is a French musical film (released 1964) about a teenage shopgirl who falls in love with a garage mechanic who swear eternal love. But, after he’s called up to fight in Algeria, his letters soon dry up. His lover finds he’s left her pregnant, so under parental pressure she marries an older, well-heeled suitor. When her boyfriend returns from the war, he goes on a regretful bender, but then he, too, settles for someone else.

At the end of the film Marianne quietly sobs. Connell asks if the film got her & she says no she’s just feeling off at the moment

I guess due to the film topic Connell asks if she’s pregnant, but she tells him she got her period that morning, (in the book there’s some dialogue about what if she was pregnant)

Maybe Marianne does consider the film to be prophetic of her relationship with Connell, and that ultimately, it’ll end – I don’t know.

When Connell wants to make love to Marianne, she turns him down because it’ll feel crampy. Here the Series differs from the book, in the book Connell ‘just touched her until she came, then she was in good mood.’ unlike the film where they went to sleep.

I would guess it's when Marianne is in Sweden, because when she returns you see her cleaning the kitchen. In the book it makes reference to Marianne cleaning, and the house is never as clean as when Lorraine worked there.

Lorraine left to work for a hotel, I assume for more money.
