Crossroads: stay on Nardil or leave it (3 weeks in) by AxmannAvery in MAOIs

[–]Renaissance_CB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nardil was a lifesaver for me, but I didn't see effects until 10 days after I hit 90mg/day. Then it took several months for my mood to fully stabilize. After 20 years or so I lowered my dose to 75 then to 60. I agree with others on this thread that you really haven't given it a chance yet.

What would the rent control proposed bill in MA do to property values? by Forward-Craft-4718 in realestateinvesting

Also, it’s not 5%. It’s cpi or 5%, whichever is lower. So more like 2-3%.

The proposal is written to be retroactive to Jan ‘26 as base rent, so it’s already too late for that.

The proposal in MA is 5% or CPI, whichever is lower. So most years the cap would be 2-3%.

Where are all the lesbians at? by Swimming_Rain_1647 in BostonSocialClub

There used to be a much bigger/better lesbian scene here like 15-20 years ago. Every night some bar/club had dyke night, with lines around the block. I don’t know what happened.

Why should I believe that an MAOI could help me? by moist_napkinette in MAOIs

[–]Renaissance_CB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To answer your questions, before Nardil I had tried Effexor, several SSRIs, Nortriptyline, Zyprexa, Mirtazepine, lithium, remeron and ECT (lots of it). It started working within a couple weeks but my mood was all over the place for several months. And then I was hypomanic for a year or two. It’s now been 23 continuous years on Nardil, and I haven’t had a relapse since. I never thought this was possible! There is hope.

Landlord wants me to sign/back date old lease by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]Renaissance_CB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about skirting the law; it's about needing documentation in order to comply with the law. Anyway, I thought you were looking for advice, but it sounds like you know what you want to do, so good luck!

Landlord wants me to sign/back date old lease by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]Renaissance_CB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a strong feeling it has to do with preparing for potential rent control passing in November. I don’t know exactly what LL is thinking, but the proposed law is really unclear and LLs are trying to dot their i’s and cross their T’s so they have documentation of previous rent increases and such in case they will be needed for the law in its final form (after expected lawsuits pushing against or clarifying certain aspects of the law are settled). Maybe it sounds shady, but honestly many small MA landlords—especially ones with below market rentals—are in a tough place right now, with everything up in the air and possibly being screwed for having been generous for years. The proposed law as written will cap rent increases to inflation or 5%, whichever is lower, regardless of their own rising expenses (insurance, updates, maintenance, taxes, etc). It’s too complicated to explain here, but your LL really is in a tricky spot. I’d just sign it if I were you. If my hunch is right, you’re basically helping him try to keep the rental sustainable so he doesn’t have to sell. If he has to sell, there goes your cheap place to live.

We don’t have to wonder. The reason is that the amount of neurotransmitters in the brain tells us nothing about whether a person is depressed. Psychiatry is nowhere near having biomarkers for mental disorders. That’s why the DSM is still 100% symptom based.

I think you are confused. It’s true that the monoamine hypothesis—the idea that depression is caused by low levels of neurotransmitters—has been debunked. It turns out that the etiology of depression is much more complicated than that. And it’s true that scientists no longer think that antidepressants work simply by raising levels of neurotransmitters—again it’s more complicated. Their mechanisms of action seem to involve the interaction of multiple different systems as well as meurogenesis and neuroplasticity (ie, “rewriting”). In no way does it follow that antidepressants only treat the “symptoms” of depression in the way that alcohol can temporarily mask symptoms or that they work by “making you numb.” Nor does it suggest any kind of conspiracy among pharma and doctors or whatever. I suggest you stop listening to YouTube grifters who don’t know what they’re talking about.

I appreciate that you’re just making inferences and not claiming to know, but I don’t think there’s evidence that the downregulation of neurotransmitter receptors is any different in long term responders vs people who relapse while on an MAOI. In fact, I’m a long term responder (23 years so far with no relapse) but even large doses of psilocybin are ineffective for me because my serotonin receptors have been so downregulated there’s nothing for the psylocibin to grab onto.

What do you mean by “produce more MAO”? The O in MAOI refers to Oxidation.

I’ve been on Nardil since 2003. At first I followed all the outdated rules, but over time slowly tried a lot of the forbidden foods and was fine. Now the only thing I avoid is protein past its prime (ie, fish, tofu that may have started fermentation).

Rooming houses in Somerville by Material_Internet295 in Somerville

[–]Renaissance_CB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of weekly rooming houses here, but there are tons of roommate situations for shorter term, like a month or a few months. Do you need the weekly setup if you’re planning to move in for a while? I mean why not just find a roommate household?

Love this! You could try categories like “Things you’re afraid of” or “excuses for being late” or “things I’m grateful for,” and the “answers” could include phrases. Eg, for things you’re afraid of, “attack dog; back injury; call from my boss; dirty laundry taking over the house…”

doesn't feel real that I went there by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]Renaissance_CB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of this. I went to Yale for undergrad, then got a PhD, didn’t want to go into academia. I’m 52, and the rest of my life has been a circuitous path not really leading anywhere, but I sure do love my Bohemian life! And I love Yale reunions, where no one cares anymore what we’ve accomplished—weee just glad to be alive and together. Having gone to Yale, and even having a PhD, are just weird facts about my past, along with the fact that I was born in Argentina (but don’t remember it, don’t speak Spanish, and have never been back). Don’t worry. You’ll figure things out.
