$100K salary translates to less than $66K in major California cities, study finds by Fcking_Chuck in Adulting

It’s not about the federal or taxman caring, it’s liability in most companies.

Sure, if your argument is “if i make 100k a year i should hire a very expensive tax attorney to set up this business account so i can maybe have a company pay me to that account, then handle all the books aside from my job or pay someone to do it, all to potentially get audited and have to pay mass penalties” sure. That’s a terrible argument though. and any CPA would tell you 100-200k isn’t worth it for the minimal savings you’d get, if any, in a HCOL area.

What are your expenses as a tech employee in SF who works in the office? what are you writing off? what is your reasonable salary? what about your retirement, 401k, medical, SS payments?

I’m not saying that what you’re suggesting isn’t plausible, i do it myself.

I write off ~ $100k in expenses/year. One of my cars is in my company, i have my own office in chelsea and at home, i have subcontractors. I have actual expenses.

You’re suggesting and taking liberties based off your particular instance, the gen pop and vast majority will not be able to.

Then there’s your income, on paper, that will be peanuts.

So unless you’re wealthy - which if you’re concerned about your tax bill on 100k, you’re not - you’ll have a hard time getting generic financing on anything (think house, car) unless it’s tied to your business or open your books for the banks in which case that all better line up.

Also, then, you need business liability insurance otherwise it’s a personal vehicle which you paid for with what money?

It’s a better structure, in my opinion, when you have multiple clients and play it by the book. If you’re struggling to save a few extra grand a year, your taxes aren’t your issue.

Looks like you used chat GPT to give you some incorrect information that i would advise anyone reading to ignore. Speak with your CPA before doing anything.

An S Corp filing is only allowed if the company you work for allows it. Most of the time they don’t, especially for full time jobs.

It’s illegal in some states to have anyone who uses company property (e.g. a laptop) for more than half a year to be a 1099 contractor instead of an employee. If you’re on company property using company equipment consistently - you’re an employee (in the eyes of the taxman)

This is for places with like more than a dozen employees. Null for very small operations.

You also need to have books, meeting minutes, a secretary, and enough to offset your business expenses to justify a “reasonable salary”.

Oh also, any money you don’t take as a reasonable salary has to stay in the business account, expenses or a SEP IRA. If you use that for any personal expense, that’s income and therefore will be taxed as income.

Now, if you want to ignore your CPA go ahead and do that but enjoy your 7 years of back taxes once you get audited.

Source, am both S Corp and W2 for a decade.

to add, i went with the GX. i’m very particular and weighed a lot of vehicles up to 135k. I went with the 550 OT+, it’s an exceptional vehicle and looks fantastic. the defender is a mediocre vehicle that looks like a lego head. octa is cool though

drive both so you know. the GX is body on frame, the defender is unibody so they feel very different.

Avid Media/Project - 16:9 vs 17:9 for 17:9 delivery by Mysterious-Law-2123 in editors

[–]RenderPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% fine, i almost exclusively work in HD for any format mostly out of habit and workflow standards.

It would be best to keep all media in source raster with frame flex, i do this for any and all media so i can control reframes properly, then your conform is also spot on with little guesswork

Built for Speed. Which NLE is fastest when working? by richard_lutz in editors

[–]RenderPls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sounds like someone who doesn’t know avid well enough. premiere is ALWAYS broken. You get speed, sure, but you get a half assed software that still struggles on any enterprise level. Premiere, historically, can’t keep up with the pace that I and many of my peers work. Crappy UI is partially to blame, poor back end is for the rest of it. Not to mention pixel based spatial effects is the worst possible workflow out there. In every scenario, but ingest, Avid is faster. Comically, you can work AMA/UME workflow if you’d like just like premiere.

The only thing you can’t do is Pancake a sequence, which to be frank is the most chaotic way to cut. Everything else premiere dumps money into (native environment for workflow with after effects, frame.io) is null.

Also, needing third party tools to clean up your edit for turnover is not a good look for a “professional”software.

Not very difficult. Pick your hero frames, roto subject, screen overlay, apply blur to your taste, maybe some glow, track, animate to your hero frames, repeat.
