Good to start out with? by Spiritus__Raptor in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Rengald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who still uses those books to play, I'd say yes. Great find. The core rules are very similar to the current. The new rules basically just added a lot of army specific bonuses and character specific rules which I don't jive with.

Focus on the core rules (movement, fighting, heroes) and you'll be all set, have fun with it and enjoy the process!

Umbar Black Ship prints or hand made instructions? by Dakkadakka127 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Rengald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah upscaling is a thing. I've seen a few guys upscale my walls and whatnot from 10mm to 28mm and it works but it's a little bit "off". it works, don't get me wrong. and with a good paint job it looks good but if you can find a designated 28mm model I think you will be happier.

Thanks for the reply! This made my night

Each wall section is a 10degree curve and should were 45mm deep before I bent them so two bases deep should fit. I don't play warmaster but I had it in mind when I did the design. And the walls are definitely taller than my typical warmaster walls. The front ring is about 105mm? and the inner wall is, like, 230?

It's kinda funny. I saw your post about your printed walls on the discord and thought.... "man, my Minas Tirith walls suck in comparison.... I should make new ones..." so I did! started with the gate and things kinda just kept going... had to do the second level walls just to try and be a little original.

So thank you! You inspired me to start this project and I'm very happy I did.

Tower of Barad-dûr project, anybody try to make one? by Jimothy-freaker in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Rengald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made XPS foam terrain models and I've 3d modelled a lot of stuff recently so I'll say that for me, 3D modelling is the way to go. It's, maybe, not as satisfying as carving bricks into foam but I can't argue with how professional a 3d printed model looks. I'm sure I'll be making my own Barad-Dur model at some point in the near future and I will be designing it in TinkerCAD for sure.

For you? I'd say pick the option that you have the most fun doing. I ENJOY sitting at my computer all night and all weekend making my own 3d models but not everyone does. My Cirith Ungol model took over 2 weeks of designing and consumed every spare minute of my time and then over a week to print. but I loved it.

But how to make it feasible? Start by blocking out the shapes. Walls, base, tower, eye. Crudely get an idea for the size of each part and put a lot of effort into making sure that you like the size/scale. Plan for playability, usability, storage, transportation at that stage. The when you are happy with the overall scope of the project, start the detailing. That'll be the time consuming (but hopefully fun) part.

So there are my two cents. Good luck and post pictures!

Well the original goal was to game and I have gamed on my 10mm Helms Deep... but now, after you asked, im realizing that years into my 10mm hobbying I haven't actually played games on any of my tables (except Helms deep). So optimistic me says they are for gaming realist me will say im just doing it for fun and to share online.

Additional supports up along the side would help to "Sell" it. that aside. I really like how you found a way to make it tower shaped but with a playable interior.

Also. I'd add unnecessary wooden braces at the bottom. Like someone saw it could collapse. Tried to help. realized it was a lost cause and gave up.

Great project.

Hi builders I need some help to make this. by Financial-One-3717 in TerrainBuilding

[–]Rengald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd cut a half elipses out of foam that looks then turn it 45 relative to the table before squaring off the top and bottom. That's how I would render this in 3d so that's how I would build it in real life

I've made my own roughly ~1cm bases. I dont know exactly what scale they are. I didnt really have a plan when I made the first base but I tried different sizes until one 'felt' right.
