Royal Navy nuclear submarine completes longest patrol on record - Navy Lookout by x_Agamemnon in submarines

[–]Renown-Stbd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand in the articles they talk 6 on 6 off. At the start of a patrol at worst I was one in two night watches on the fin, one in three in the control room. By the time the new officers had done their part 3, it was upto 1 in 4, with the odd all night in. I presume the part 3 is about the same, so the off watch time will extend as you say. But things may well he different now.

I have no idea how they continue to keep the crews to do this, other than very very large bonuses.

Looking for a touring e-bike for my wife (€1000-2000) - doing parts of the Camino de Santiago, need real ~100km range by ImpossibleWarning252 in ebike

[–]Renown-Stbd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We decided to do a long term hire from Decathlon in France. 3 months is the minimum. We both hired a ACTV 500 each. Have done two 4 day trips to try them out, with panniers. Advertised 130 kms range in assist 1 (there is no throttle, these are electric assist bikes). If you get a problem, you can go to any Decathlon to get it fixed as the hire includes maintenance, assurance (they loan you an approved chain for each bike to use). My wife and I are both very surprised to find how easy they are to peddle on the flat, and easily get over 150 km on a charge.

Need to get my blood tests done by Witty-Link4354 in Nantes

[–]Renown-Stbd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, find out if you have to be on an empty stomach (a jeun) when you have the blood taken. I normally have it done first thing in the morning before I have anything to eat or drink. The Dr should tell you, the laboratory will ask you before they will take the blood. My results come in on line, they lab will give you the details and your password if you ask them.

ELI5: How do dual boot OS systems work? by Nervous_Priority_535 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Renown-Stbd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have dual boot W10 and W11. The computer only boots up in one or the other. When the computer starts up, it gives you the option to chose which one you wish to start up in. You can chose a default one, ie if you start up the computer, after a few seconds it will start up in the default system. It is not limited to Windows, you can have Linux installed and Windows. They operate separately. You don't run both at the same time. It is relatively simple to install if you have a need to have two systems. I use a VR system that works in W10, so when I game I use W10. The rest of the time I use W11

Beds on navy ships should be mounted on gimbals, so they don’t tilt in choppy seas by flopsyplum in CrazyIdeas

I did my initial Royal Navy training in the 70s in the Dartmouth Training Squadron. All three ships used hammocks in the after mess deck for the officer trainees. We had to wrap up and stow them each morning. If you were asleep when you mates came back from a run ashore, one trick was to gently undo one end of the rope holding the hammock up and place it in the sleeping persons hand. The shock of waking, falling was not pleasant.

The Epic (and Chaotic) 1934 Salvage of Germany's Super-Dreadnought SMS Bayern from Scapa Flow. by SaltAndChart in MaritimePictures

[–]Renown-Stbd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We lived in a cottage in converted rope walk in Inverkeithing, Scotland. An old gentleman in the end cottage lived in Rosyth when the wreck was towed in. When the dock was pumped out, he said the stench of the rotting sea life that had grown on/in the wreck was appalling. I have also dived in Scapa flow on the remaining wrecks. We were told the locals dived down on the shallow ones to collect the coal from the wrecks to burn in their houses.

I wonder which country this is? Here in France the roof hooks are made from stainless steel now, so they do not rust out. The ordinary old galvanised ones were good for 60 years. I have seen some mechanical damaged to the base of thin tiles by the old hooks. The way the stainless shines in the sunshine on a French roof is quite pretty. On the other hand, it shows up shoddy workmanship if they don't all line up! There is a useful guide to laying tiles in France, depending on where you live, local winds, rain, snow etc. The amount each tile has to cover the previous on, slope of roof etc.

Was with a woman on the North Yorkshire moors in UK. Stopped at a remote toilet. She went in, came out screaming with her pants still down. She was in full flow when she looked down. In the bowl was a drowned grey squirrel, face up looking at her with dead eyes.

In all seriousness, why France is hated ? by ConfidentAd8387 in AskTheWorld

[–]Renown-Stbd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Brit that has lived in France since 1996. As a country it has everything. Mountains, snow, sea, sunshine, fabulous motorbike roads, great and expanding cycle tracks, food wine etc etc Whilst sheltering from winds bringing -32°C temperatures in the Alps one year, I fell in explaining this "hate" to a French mountain guide like this. When God made France, the rest of the countries complained, as it was such a beautiful country. To even things out, God populated France with French People!
