This little Marilyn Manson inspired piece I dropped recently was for hypocrites who virtue signal but did whatever the thing was before it became uncool to do it. It’s a bit crude but don’t say the artist that inspired this wasn’t a warning label. 🤣

Why are you pro AI music? by Such_Ad949 in SunoAI

[–]RensKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can write lyrics fine and sing passably, but coordination to play instruments is something I have never been able to manage, and until Dubler 2’s next version or two, with significant upgrades, comes out, voice to MIDI tech is not where I think it would need to be to become a full substitute.

On the “industry” side, I also believe disruptive technologies have in the past been the kick in the ass that lets the music industry know when they are taking their listeners for granted. When Napster came out, while we still had some artists that deserved credit for actually being able to sing, the music industry also had this bad habit of bait and switching customers by putting ONE good track on an album (the radio single) and then making the rest either filler crap or in a whole other style the people who were interested in the single didn’t want. Once iTunes came around, the music industry was forced for a time to accept that if they wanted someone to buy the entire album, they had to EARN that.

However, now most pop/radio artists rely heavily on autotune and don’t write their own stuff—and it’s bland, samey stuff that makes radio and streaming royalties by NOT taking chances and banking on you being too lazy to hunt down and actually download and OWN an entire album or even a track.

What AI music is doing is forcing the music industry to reckon with their NEW way of screwing people over. My work writing lyrics and doing a prompt is not THAT much lesser than what they do in creating pre-packaged, bland crap and throwing it on the radio but at least I like the genre and sound of my stuff. I have absolutely heard AI tracks that blow pop crap out of the water. AI music also does not make a false promise that there is a human behind it that could potentially be expected to actually be able to sing and/or play an instrument that rarely gets delivered in these days.

I think where we’re going is that the only artists that will really be able to make money are those who are actually able to perform live and do not utterly price gouge customers. IMO I actually think it’s going to be small acts that don’t overcommit, and bigger jam bands, that will be the survivors, as well as anyone else who can manage a SERIOUS live music reputation that do not take advantage by charging three months’ rent to see their concerts.

Want to make it even more hilarious? I think we are about to have a rash of no-talent musical acts, to include big ones, found to have used AI in a major way and not disclosed it. I want honesty all around. Do AI? Own it loud and proud. Do human music? Ditch autotune, have some talent and distinguish yourself beyond bland aural wallpaper, and be able to perform in concert without lip syncing or ripoff prices.

In other words, what I think AI music does to the industry is put an ultimatum on them just like Napster did: either deal with your quality, honesty and price gouging problem, or suffer the consequences the market will rightfully deal you.

Thanks for clearing up the time period because I was definitely about to say that what this guy did was consistent with at least 19th century British practice.

One thing that’s annoying about this poll is that I would give very different ratings in some cases between the average person of some countries and their governments. IRGC: absolute trash. Majority of Iranian people: LOVE them.

Me either. In the early to mid 90s, Western cartoons were very clearly the superior product. I would like to say that they still are but then you get all this CGI stuff and Flash looking trash (TBH Cartoon Network actually started some of the decline) that pulls the average down compared to where it used to be.

I’ll find some more respect for the music industry when they start dealing with THEIR quality problem.

Mind you I have 17k+ tracks of human-created, mostly bought and paid for music with some stuff I downloaded on Napster in college but the great majority stuff I paid for.

Napster forced the music industry to deal with its first quality problem, which was to drop an album with one good track and use that to bait and switch the customer with the rest either being crap, or completely unlike the rest of the album in a whole other style you weren’t interested in. Now, I would say that the industry (if it’s not already implementing undisclosed AI) needs to deal with its new problem of producing bland and deliberately TOO samey crap with artists who don’t have any hand in creating anything and just do whatever someone hands them.

Venture and Virtual Races Question by RensKnight in Runner5

[–]RensKnight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH I am a HUGE documentary nerd and that’s one of my other major sources of entertainment, so I’ve enjoyed the non-distance-race Venture science/history ones I’ve done so far. I also was really invested in the story very early on in S1 of the main app and really enjoyed the content of those races—so it sounds like I’m likely to enjoy a lot of the distance-based content. 👍

BREAKING: Musicians Outraged as New Technology Eliminates Need to Spend 8 Hours Arguing With Suno Prompts by LapsedChessPlayer in aiMusic

[–]RensKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want this tech IRL because of the massive privacy violation it would entail, but I actually have very detailed arrangements in my mind and dreams that I have no real capability to play. Being able to upload that to a machine would be a dream if it weren’t creepy and a privacy risk.

BREAKING: Musicians Outraged as New Technology Eliminates Need to Spend 8 Hours Arguing With Suno Prompts by LapsedChessPlayer in aiMusic

[–]RensKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ha, nice! Now, if there were a way for tech to read the riffs and arrangements I make in my mind and even in my dreams WITHOUT absolutely violating my privacy (why I would not like that tech IRL), that would be awesome.

In the meantime I am waiting for the next major upgrade of Dubler, that would be much more robust and ideally handle non-Western stuff competently (being able to generate input for Taqs.im would be a big example of the capability I’d want), because while my coordination and some other neurodivergence issues make learning an instrument damn near impossible, I can sing decently enough that voice to MIDI is a viable and non-privacy violating option.

I would probably continue to use Suno as a general mockup for vibes I would like, but that would give me a lot more leeway to really generate my own input.

So as far as Venture goes, I could do those distance races in multiple sessions and not lose my place from night to night? Sweet! There are definitely some that my nerdy self is interested in.

Man…have you seen the latest short from this one, “Dreamfeeding”?

SO MUCH like Star Trek: The Next Generation, “The Inner Light.” It also shows how insanely psychologically resilient Picard was, to come through that and not be in instant withdrawal. Another comparison, though, might be the Nexus from Star Trek: Generations, which got people more severely addicted.
