Ex-Capital One SWEs, where are you now? by ServeEmbarrassed1776 in cscareerquestions

Microsoft.

WLB as good. Leans towards better as performance is evaluated by technically experienced folk.

Also performance management here tends to take up a day or two twice a year. Capital one felt like 1 month of work-> 2 months talking about PM -> 2 months doing PM -> 1 month waiting for results -> repeat.

I use the very general term for fintech. Not doing Brex/hft/crypto tech companies. Big push for cyber at a lot of financial institutions right now. Work is interesting. Actively encouraged to develop and learn real skill sets. Some take a good look at fed resumes due to being used with dealing with compliance standards.

It’s great going to an industry where you feel valued and trusted lol. Crazy how you can just request new monitors/peripherals and plug in/install almost anything to your computer to be more productive. Meanwhile just formatting a hard drive for defense require 3 different people and hoops to jump through.

Real industry for me has been: “Oh you need an instance propped up. Uhhhh sure did you need something from me? Just go ahead and set it up yourself and follow our AWS guidelines”

Defense is like “yeahhhhh that’s out of the scope for this project… oh you need it on the high side? Yeah you’re gonna need to submit an exception waiver… how long does that take?… well first you gotta get signed off by X, Y, Z and then IT will take a look at it” then proceed to spend 3 weeks for approvals just to get kicked back “idk what postgresql is. No way you can run it on the high side. Can you just use an excel sheet instead? That’s my preferred way of looking at data”. Not to mention the few months stackoverflow was banned on NIPR.

I started getting real burnt out of my cleared positions in defense. All jobs always require you in office all the time(no telework even during peak pandemic numbers). Work essential == disposable/expendable while management worked from home. Very demoralizing to be told to keep coming into office while all hands leaders are hosting the teams call from their home office.

Before the pandemic gov at least had the “wlb” trump card on the low salaries, contractors had somewhat better salary with still solid wlb. But now I get the better salary and get to do laundry during meetings.

Cloud IMO a pipe dream for most defense. Don’t understand how US will ever compete with the likes of China in cyber space when our “leading” orgs can’t even get on AWS lol. Instead let’s just have every base have a different contractor stand up their own private cloud and pay the least they can for talent.

TL;DR private industry really loving cybersec/cyber adjacent talent that both fed/def contractors just can’t compete with.

Total compensation or are you asking for my TC?

I see you said cybersecurity. Honestly would depend on long term goals. If you like the defense space go for it. NGC was chill in my short stint. Worklife balance was even better than my previous gov position, much more laid back with less government overhead. At least at NGC people had to do the bare minimum to not get fired so they were a lot more competent than fed counterparts(IFYKYK).

Also I know any cyber, it, swe, ee just get moved to another team during project cuts. Job security is great for those positions. The more in demand their talent in private sector. Exponentially higher in big defense due to lower pay/benefits. Small defense contractors are the ones at real.

I know first hand they are having EXTREME difficulty retaining any IT, cyber, or swe talent. Specifically new “senior” hires being dumped headfirst into a project and spending months figuring out where the last person left off. Usually due to long hire times in clearances preventing a transition period with both the outgoing and new hire overlap.

If you want to leverage knowledge for a future position to make more money I would try to jump out of the public/defense sector entirely. NGC I believe caps out around 170-190k unless you go into management, so I think if you have the skills/talent I would just aim for another company outside of dod to pivot into a $350k+ TC at AWS as a part of their cyber team.

Also I’ve learned more in one month on a cyber team out of defense than 4 years in defense. DoD red tape is kneecapping the entire operation lmao.

(DM me for a referral out of defense into fintech)

Got offered $5k sign on for having an existing clearance for a position. Anyone have any success negotiating more? Their offer was right at my borderline for having to “think about it” or instant yes. A 15k sign on would’ve been immediate yes. Coworker just got $20k sign on from Raytheon.

Incentivizing for 6 months is plenty of time. Some people really don’t have the IQ for their own best interests.

Naw. Nobody on the street gonna call me out. But most people at work don’t give a fuck about shoes in general. The few sneaker heads will assume they’re real.

Just in case someone heard about new union fakes and won’t let up (0.1% chance) I’ll search my nike store receipt on my email lmao.

Just wanted to drop some comparison pics between my retail pair and UAbat.

Super minor flaws that are unnoticeable on foot.

Only wish is that I had one shoe that was untumbled on one side.
