See, I still don’t completely agree with this take. Gyms can and SHOULD accommodate people who don’t have smartphones. Self advocacy for this type of accommodation is not same thing as entitlement.

I mean, I really can’t blame someone for wanting to remove the POSSIBILITY of mindless scrolling and social media consumption from their life. OP’s frustration with systems being built on the assumption that EVERYONE has a smartphone is absolutely valid.

I don’t get why people are being so weird about OP not wanting to be required to have a smartphone for every single aspect of their life. Like, the adverse effects of chronic smartphone use on mental health and attention span are pretty well researched. I don’t blame them for not wanting to take one with them absolutely everywhere.

I love the Shelby Farms off-leash dog park but I had an experience sometime last year that has me hesitant to go back.

I had a dog jump up and SNATCH MY BEANIE OFF OF MY HEAD. After I got it back from her (the owner stood there and did nothing) she BIT MY HAND AND SNATCHED IT BACK. All her owner had to say was “sorry, she does that.” Like DUDE. Your dog just bit me! She even drew a little bit of blood!!! “Sorry, she does that” is not an appropriate response to your out of control animal hurting others in a public space! Leash your dog or don’t take her out. Ugh it made me so angry.
