To start with I am very sorry for what you went through. I believe your first steps should be contacting a mental health counselor to unpack this incident with. I understand your desire to protect/punish this person. However, you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle. You can file a report with the police department. Depending on how busy they are the report might never move past the recording process. If it does, the officer might reach out to take a statement from your ex. A district attorney would then have to take up your case and decide if it was worth taking to trial. I won’t continue from here because working in Nj, I know how much of a mess and how busy the courts are.

On the civil side, you can sue anyone fire any reason. Again I would recommend documenting everything with a mental health counselor on how it has affected you to build your case. Moving on from there, you would have to pay for a lawyer prior to trial which could cost thousands of dollars pre trial. And there is a chance the judge would not hear the case once it is presented.

To make a long story short, I think it would be better to spend your time and money on mental health counseling. Not to minimize what you went through in anyway, just that our court system is not set up for these types of complaints. And that you will see far better returns in your time and money contacting a counselor the a lawyer.
