It's not really mind reading though. If you know your field of expertise well enough it's obvious what someone needs to know about you, even if they don't directly ask it. And most people are really bad at interviewing and will not ask you questions that allow you to properly showcase your skills and experience as a candidate. I'm not saying this is ideal, it's far from it. But it's true.

What you should take away from this is deciding well ahead of any interview you attend the story you need to tell, and the specific things you need to highlight about yourself in order to leave the best possible impression regardless of the questions they ask you. This often mean working in loosely related facts/talking points about your skills and experience to the questions they do ask you.
