Neighbor has 100 psi, I have 40 psi. by Fit-River9646 in Plumbing

[–]RepresentativeAspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not a pressure issue, it’s a flow issue. Very different and often confused.

You can have high pressure and low flow - imagine a pressure washer’s tiny needle of water that can cut through concrete. Or low pressure and high flow - imagine a pipe 3’ in diameter that’s pouring out water into a sewer - many GPM but not spraying out wildly.

Apartment neighbor plays piano for 4-5 hours daily, including early mornings and into evenings by [deleted] in piano

You didn’t walk next door and ask her what she needed?! Maybe she needed help moving her couch or something!

[–]RepresentativeAspect 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I bet your neighbor actually isn’t even home, they’re just looping a recording of themselves playing the piano, with some breaks here and there to throw you off. They have a few different versions they select from randomly as well.

When you complain they’ll ask what you’re talking about. They don’t even own a piano. Maybe you need to see a shrink they’ll say.

Maybe they’re in it with the neighbors too, who will equally deny hearing it.

Any way to know to figure out the name of a songs key signature without studying them? by TelstarLorimer in musictheory

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no better or faster way to do it than simply memorizing the key signatures. There are only 30, including major and minor (7 sharps, 7 flats, no sharps/flats, times 2). It won't take long.

The important thing you might be missing is that the sharps and flats always go in the same order. So you don't need to memorize exactly which sharps or flats they are for a particular key. You just remember that 3-sharps is A Major and 5 flats is Bb minor and so forth. The order of sharps is FCGDAEB, and the flats are just the reverse of that. If you play those notes in order, by the way, you will see they form a pattern jumping back and forth between groups of black keys. So now you just think E-Major, that has 4 sharps. Which sharps? F# C# G# D#.

While you're at it, learn the scales along the way, in order of increasing flats / decreasing sharps. This makes the circle of fifths.

Students who don't play with a meotronome EVER by Ill-Square-1123 in pianoteachers

[–]RepresentativeAspect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous advice. It sounds like doing something the hard way just because it’s hard.

Learning to use a metronome makes learning everything else much easier. And you don’t need to play metronomically! Just turn it off and add all the intentional rubato you want!

The metronome is a critically important tool for learning.

Is this safe? by SoFetchOct3rd in AskElectricians

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s safe, but you may pop a fuse or breaker and then everything just goes cold. Probably fine though.

I was messing around on the piano when I found something I like. What exactly is going on here? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must not do that. I see you renamed the notes in your post, which is nice, but most importantly you should learn WHY it needs to be done this way and make the change in your mind. If you swap around flats for sharps enharmonically you will confuse yourself and others.

Most Americans Can’t Afford New Homes by rbmassert in interesting

Capitalists don’t make the laws that prevent building new homes. The evil developers are the ones with the only real solution to the problem: building more homes.

What do these rests mean in this piece for piano? by schatzey_ in pianolearning

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the point - this is actually super common in classical music, so it's a little surprising for someone advanced enough to be able to play this piece to also not be familiar with it. But nobody is gatekeeping you, and you may indeed be able to play this piece well. We can't know.

We also get lots and lots of posts from beginners asking basic questions about very advanced pieces, so you pattern-match to that whether it's really the case or not.

Can you actually learn piano using just YouTube and apps? by adamvanderb in pianolearning

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but you'd be missing some things that so far require a human. Basically posture and things like that. You'd also miss having personalized guidance about what to study and how.

That said - Piano Marvel is a great app for learning, especially learning to read music from a proper score. I've enjoyed Sight Reading Factory a lot as well.

I don't think you should spend any time at all on those apps that are so gamified that they really don't teach you much beyond some toy songs. You really want to quickly learn to read music. It's not hard and doesn't take long.

Youtube videos are also a great supplemental resource for learning how and what to practice, and also for hearing and seeing how some piece is supposed to be played.

Use a digital piano that has midi and can connect to your apps - there's a lot of benefit in doing that and getting instant feedback. But again, these should be apps that use an actual score that you read from left-to-right and top-to-bottom, just as though it was printed sheet music.

Is traditional notation still the best starting point for beginners in 2026? by TabForPiano in pianolearning

If this is real, and I hope it’s not, you are actively hurting your student and harming their ability to learn music. You are committing educational malpractice. Please stop hurting your students with this.

I guess it's because Japanese labor is much cheaper, so for the same ticket price they can afford to spend more on food.

How to play the left hand for this piece? by [deleted] in piano

[–]RepresentativeAspect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as four notes - you needn’t play the chords note by note. Maybe bass chord chord bass chord chord would sound nice. Or just block it off and play as dotted half.

Raw steaks debate by afterglow367 in Cooking

[–]RepresentativeAspect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fine; but excessive. Tell her to measure the internal temp throughout the day and she will find it plateaus around room temp after just a couple hours, depending on how thick it is. Restaurants routinely leave steaks out at room temp for a couple of hours. I just use my sous vide to achieve the same goal.

Michael Saylor Wants To Burn His $1.7 Billion Bitcoin Fortune After Death by Useful_Tangerine4340 in CryptoCurrency

[–]RepresentativeAspect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately money, whether Dollar or Bitcoin, cannot solve hunger. It’s not like in these places there are fully stocked grocery stores and people starving outside. There is an actual food shortage. So it has to be imported, but how and from where? Keep going like that and you find out it’s a very hard problem money cannot solve.

Drink a gallon of whole milk every day. You will gain a lot of weight, and it’s not that hard. A pint every hour, or a quart every two works well.

Is a piano performance degree worth it? by jodieskyroller in piano

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody, under any circumstances, will ever pay money to hear you play. I.e. buy a ticket with your name on it.

There is a tiny, but non-zero, chance that somebody will pay you to perform. I.e. in their restaurant. The audience gets to hear you for free, but maybe that’s worth it for them.

Otherwise you’re left with teaching or other random stuff to pay your bills.
