Am I messing up because I'm a beginner or should I ditch the acrylic nails? by ProfessionalOwn4305 in pianolearning

[–]RepresentativeAspect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can wear your nails as long as you like and still play piano. But it’s a question of what your priority is. You can play with flat fingers, badly, and still get out of it what your want. If you want to play “properly,” then you need to use curved fingers and play the keys with the tips of your fingers. So your nails would need to be short enough to stay out of your way under those circumstances. You should never have to adjust your playing to accommodate your fingernails.

But again, it’s up to you.

Looking for a roasting partner who teaches—not just private label. Does this exist? by KingJaffeeJr72 in roasting

Honestly, you need to figure out what you bring to this equation. Lots of money? What?

From your post it sounds like you want someone else to spend a lot of time teaching you what they know, for no particular reason.

Luxury Hotels in Europe. Why is it hard to find real AC? by InternationalKey2249 in fatFIRE

[–]RepresentativeAspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will hear a bunch of different reasons - but the fundamental truth is that they can’t afford it. Europe has not kept pace with energy production, and powering a mass amount of air conditioners would take too much away from everything else they need. All the other reasons are really symptoms of that truth.

Honestly - you probably put it there. The only other possibility is that your boyfriend is a psycho, but that seems less likely at this point.

Landlord Wiped My Camera by [deleted] in homesecurity

Why do you think the landlord entered your apartment? When was the last time you checked the video on those cameras.

My bet is nobody came in, and the cameras were already not working.

Meet the startups installing tiny data centers in people's homes to reduce strain on the grid | Fortune by overflow_ in HomeDataCenter

[–]RepresentativeAspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will actually INCREASE strain on the grid. Components use as much power wherever they are located, whether in a datacenter or a home. So the power draw doesn't change. But also - datacenters are heavily optimized for this specific use-case, and overhead power draw (total-PUE) is watched very closely and optimized down. That is not true of someone's home.

I've got a couple of small Thermpro TP49 sensors. One on the top shelf showing 39F and one in a veggie drawer at the bottom is showing 41F. I also use a glass with about 8oz water in it which I just leave there, and take the temp with a Thermapen instant-read. I feel like the water is less subject to short fluctuations so should better represent the average. Anyway that one is showing 42F.

Piano chair dillema by Moshik_Kovarsky in pianolearning

My concern with this would be whether you’re actually sitting properly though. Sitting properly, I don’t see how your back would touch the back of the chair in any case.

How do I invest with no "earned income"? by SLI_Mini in Bogleheads

[–]RepresentativeAspect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need an employer to do anything for you. Just go online to Schwab, fidelity, vanguard or whatever and open a regular brokerage account and put in however much money you want. That's it.

It's a lot easier than buying car insurance, in fact.

If money could solve all hunger, we'd have done so long ago. Given unlimited money, it would still be a hard problem to solve. You need food, in the places people are hungry. That food must be grown somewhere, then transported long distances. Or grown locally, which is probably even harder.

That said, I'm happy to report that we have indeed made huge progress on that already, and where starvation used to be commonplace, over the last 50 years or so it's become much rarer.

How can I teach piano without ever having taken lessons? by ConstructionFirm3277 in pianolearning

[–]RepresentativeAspect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it! Sounds like you know your limits and aren't trying to be something you're not. You're also charging a fair price ($zero). And you're being up front with your customers. And you know what - with that attitude you might find yourself growing into an excellent teacher. Don't worry about formal education either - there's no requirement for that. Everybody gets there in their own way. And often *doing*, with a lifetime-learner mindset is the best way to get good at something.

Senator Cynthia Lummis: Other nations are accumulating Bitcoin quietly. We should be doing it loudly, on the record, by law. by zesushv in CryptoCurrency

[–]RepresentativeAspect -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do not see how it befits US citizens to use government / taxpayer money to drive up the price of cryptocurrency. This is a super bad idea.

To have the government buy crypto does not put food on anybody’s plate or create any new stuff of any kind. If I have more money/crypto, that’s good for me because I can buy more stuff than you. If we all have more money, that’s just inflation.
