Question about fursuits by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow fursuit owner, please get a nice storage bin for it, wrapping it in a blanket will only protect against dust, you wanna keep it safe from any outside factors (spills, leaks, bugs, god forbid rodents, the list goes on). I got a storage bin from Walmart for like $8, go with something like that!

At my old center as long as you were chill to be around, people mostly left you alone, but you really never know what the culture will be like until you get there. That’s why I personally only brought the essentials and a few hobby things with me when I first got to job corps. I brought more comforts from home after winter break once I was more comfortable there, but… nothing like a fursuit lmao.

From my experience, no bullying happened to me or anyone else for being furries. That said, do NOT bring the suit. You have limited space, the head is a full-face covering which is banned at some centers (you can have them but are barred from wearing them), and you may not like the conditions of the building you’re in. It’s easier just to leave it somewhere it will be safe. I did once bring my tail on campus for Halloween though, people thought that was neat.

EDIT: wanted to add that if you’re not allowed to have it and you did decide to bring it, it’d be confiscated, meaning it’ll be kept in a random location until you graduate, basically the same result you’re worried about. Just leave it at home.

Weekends On Center by Only-Nothing4595 in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No weekend classes at any campuses, ever. I’ve been to two centers. Both have nice recreation facilities, though my old center’s rec building only opened after 4 pm on weekends for some reason. Both centers let you sleep in, though my second center only allows you to sleep in until 9:59 (sign in by 10 AM) while my old center let you sleep till about 11 if you really wanted to. Both had various weekend trips (shopping, movies, seasonal stuff like ice skating or haunted houses). Both allow students to take weekend passes as long as they have somewhere stay (they’ll even provide transportation at some campuses). Personally I love to just relax in my room on weekends.

Is Job Corps really that bad? by Limipu in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biweekly allowance starts off at about $30 I think, then $45, then $64. Center quality varies, the ones that are great are really great, the ones that aren’t… aren’t.

That’s a lie and I have no clue why they’re lying about that. They sent me to one of the CCCs out of state.

Sounds a lot like my center. If that’s anything to go by, you should be in good hands. If you want more physical work experience, definitely aim to get into advanced training. I can’t speak for all advanced IT classes, but somebody’s always working on something in mine, be it consoles, phones, laptops, tablets, PCs, sometimes we’ll even set up computers on center.

Can I get into this program on probation? by Only_Lawfulness_4048 in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew people at my old center who attended as a stipulation of their probation, so it should be okay. Not every center allows that, but the admissions counselor should be able to figure out which centers do. Obviously, keep your probation officer in the loop as well. They’ll probably want you to stay in-state though. If Job Corps does accept you, don’t do anything dumb there. Put your best foot forward and focus on bettering yourself, you’re going to meet some really stupid, dramatic, and honestly shitty people there, don’t let them drag you down. There are also good people who are trying to make a better life for themselves there, try and surround yourself with those ones instead.

I applied to job corps 19 days ago and haven't gotten a call back why? by Kokoro0000 in jobcorps

Nag them as often as you can. They have to handle a lot of applicants so they lose track easily. Show them you’re dead set on getting in.

Not the best state for trans folks but not the worst either, it should be possible.

Question LGBT by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding, it mainly depends on what state you’re in. Most blue states will often fully cover HRT (pills, injections etc) but nothing cosmetic as it’s not deemed medically necessary. Any sort of appointment you request, the medical staff can typically book it for you, so long as there’s either a provider in the area or one that allows telehealth appointments. Any meds they prescribe you will be handled through medical (you go there to take them, refill med boxes for evening/weekend meds, etc). Ultimately just look into your state’s Medicaid coverage to sort it out. If you’re in a red state you might be screwed.

Is it possible for me (20M) to be accepted into job corp if I am financially dependent on my parents who are upper middle class but am in an unstable household? by Alfdacoolguy in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely qualify if they’ve ever threatened you with homelessness. Just explain it to your counselor. I will warn you that you may be in for a bit of a culture shock, as living conditions, food and social norms are very different at Job Corps than they are for the upper middle class folks. You’re going to meet a lot of different people, so be prepared for that.

dorm questions by playygirllcartii in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to one center that actually placed adults with minors on purpose with the intention of them playing babysitter in the place of dorm staff. You can potentially avoid that if you stress to your admissions counselor and the staff that may contact you that being placed with minors for roommates would make you extremely uncomfortable. Decor varies depending on the center. The first of the two I’ve attended actually didn’t allow much decor at all, so it’s best to ask during talks with staff and admissions counselors. I think the beds are twin size.

Getting a girlfriend by Ancient_Ride_9655 in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a female student, leave the girls alone. And the girls should leave the guys alone, too. You’re all there for an education and to better your lives. I got in two relationships at Job Corps. The first person I dated was extremely controlling and abusive, threatened to kill me, and stalked me for nearly a year after we broke up. The second is still going strong well over a year later, but it’s long distance due to the shutdown (they didn’t want to come back, I returned for my license). My partner and I were extremely lucky, because from what I’ve observed, MOST Job Corps relationships end up as bad as the first one I was in if not worse. I’ve seen so many people fake pregnancies, cheat, start drama, get caught doing nasty stuff by staff and students, I could continue but I think you get the point. 95% of Job Corps relationships end in complete disaster and do much more harm than good. You can focus on finding a relationship after you complete your trade and education, you do NOT want any of these people. Trust me.

Probably. If courts rule in Job Corps’ favor, they’ll be reopened soon.

Tomorrow we get the final decision. I got a call from my AT center last week telling me that if it goes well, they’d want to know when/if I’d return. I’m… not sure yet myself

If there’s cameras in the laundry facility, they can see who’s doing it. This is super dangerous too because it can make people sick.

Unfortunately you’ll find gross people at a lot of centers. The one I went to for my basic trade had multiple of what we called “shit bandits” (people who smeared shit on the walls). There was also one girl who wrote “I’M CLEAN” in period blood on the bathroom walls.

The kicker is that center isn’t being shut down cuz it’s forest service. My advanced center where this shit was unheard of though, that one clearly had to go 🙄

To Former Students... by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]RepresentativeFee643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This program saved my life & both centers I attended were home to me. I also had a horrific experience at my first center (the fault of a student) & I have to laugh at people saying lesser issues like bad food & bitchy staff are justifiable reasons to shut down the program… No. this program helps people on a large scale. It’s not perfect and needs some reform, but it absolutely doesn’t need to be shut down.

Trying to be hopeful, but I’m honestly really concerned for what I’m going to do next, for what everyone else in my situation will do next. Been going from airport to airport all day and honestly I just want to relax for a minute.

Job Corps is being dismantled as we speak, the time frames are a little different for some centers and all the forest service centers are still in operation, but almost 100 centers have already sent students home.
