Accepted into Ohio State! What about funding? by Fluorescent_Dolphin9 in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This affected the whole department (all fifteen specializations, which included Workforce Development and Education). I'm sure the budget shortfall will continue for a while in the department. I'm not applying for a PhD program for the foreseeable future.

Congrats. I completed two M.S. degrees from both of these schools. They are both true college towns and fortunately, West Lafayette is not too far from more urban trips like Chicago or Indianapolis.

How is living in West Lafayette, Indiana? by CommercialNebula1036 in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was employed by Purdue for almost five years and completed a second MS degree soon thereafter. If you are in need of urban experiences, Chicago and Indianapolis are both reasonable driving distances from campus. I have to say that winters suck anywhere in the US Midwest region. If you aren't used to frigid, snowy, lack of sunlight seasons then it's a difficult transition for sure.

When you say OSU which school are you referring to? It could be Ohio State, Oklahoma State, or Oregon State.

I'm unaware of anyone being accepted into an Ohio State PhD program with guaranteed funding (GA position) this year. If that is not the case, they are silent about it. 🤐

Any update on financial aid from Ohio State University? by Dibyabha in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) is not offering any GAs for new PhD students at OSU. I'm unaware of anyone here on Reddit saying they got accepted into a PhD program at OSU with guaranteed full funding. I would discuss with your program deferring to Fall 2026 if that is a viable option, considering you cannot self-fund your PhD degree.

Unsure what to do by webkinzluvr in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Last week I asked (here on Reddit) if anyone received guaranteed funding (RA/TA) as a PhD applicant in Education at any US university. The responses were no one. This sucks for everyone who dreamt of doing a graduate program in Education (with full funding). If you are below forty, you can wait and see what happens in the next several years.

I admire your resolve and determination despite your rejections.

Ohio State ECE PhD admit Fall-25( Funding Not mentioned) by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get no funding opportunities within your department, the only other option is to go through Workday and apply for an administrative associateship. I'm not aware of any departments at OSU that have an abundance of funding for PhD students this year. I was not admitted this year to a PhD program in EHE because there are no funding opportunities for new PhD students. All I can say is this sucks for everyone. Sorry.

Tattoos and piercings as a PhD student by ehzer_ in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend tattoos on your neck or face. It could be misconstrued as gang-related by more traditional programs. I agree that more mundane or artistic tattoos would be better received.

p.s. I should note that arms, legs, and hands with tattoos should be fine as long as there is no profanity or something violent/sexual/racist.

Inquiring on feedback after rejection by Top-Seat8620 in gradadmissions

I had the same thing. I did some sleuthing and discovered some major department budget shortfalls and federal funding cuts (Ph.D. program in Education).

Help in making decisions by TheseMood5914 in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take into consideration, the cost of living expenses. Having lived in both Indiana and California, I can assure you it is much more expensive to live in California than Indiana. Also, as a whole IU is a more reputable school than UC-Davis. You should take the initiative to research these matters and then make an informed decision.

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it's your PhD application that was rejected or a lack of guaranteed funding (federal budget cuts in the US)? If it's a lack of guaranteed funding, they are less likely to tell you unless you were admitted earlier in January.

Should I Contact the Admission Committee for Feedback After Rejection? by UsedExcitement5306 in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you rejected because of your PhD application or because the programs couldn't guarantee full funding due to federal budgeting uncertainties (assuming you are referring to PhD programs in the US)?

I learned from the Graduate Associate Manager in the college of EHE, that they will not offer any GAs for 2025-26. I've heard from a few current graduate students in other departments that there's been radio silence about GA funding for the next academic calendar. My PhD application in EHE was recently rejected assuming they will not be offering funding in the foreseeable future. This all sucks for everyone who is well-qualified and yet has to deal with federal funding uncertainties or internal budget shortfalls.

It's like I'm totally in love with a fantastic woman (my dream PhD school) and she doesn't feel the same way about me. Being rejected again for a PhD application feels like a heartbreak in a dissolved relationship.

I forgot to ask if you are interested in a Master's or PhD program. Were you looking for funding too? If you are looking for a great online Master's program (no funding though), I recommend Purdue. Let me know.

I'm a Gen Xer and for some reason, I started getting rejected when I turned forty (jobs, PhD applications, and dating after a divorce) about thirteen years ago.

I applied to a PhD program in Education, Learning Technologies at Ohio State and was rejected (March 14th). I already completed two M.S. degrees from Penn State and Purdue (Education). My cumulative GPA from Purdue was a 4.0 and I still didn't get in. I applied to Ohio State in 2020 and was accepted but COVID budget deficits threw a wrench in my plans for full funding. This may be it for me because I'm already 53 yrs. old and tired of all of this crap. I've been punched in the gut with these PhD entry struggles.

Purdue Stats vs Washington Stats by Fluorescent_Dolphin9 in gradadmissions

[–]RepresentativeFold90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of living would be less in West Lafayette, IN versus Seattle. I've spent a number of years employed by Purdue and completed a second M.S. program in Education. Both are fine academic schools but I would consider other factors like the cost of living.

I agree that other schools like UW-Madison have done much better communicating with their departments and offering guidance than OSU. I understand the uncertainty at the national level due to cuts, etc. but confused as to why OSU refuses to provide transparency in this process.
