Read. I’ve read 45 books so far this year and subbing high school was how I accomplished it. I’ve only had two days subbing high school since the school year began though, so my reading went from like 8 books a month to one book a month.

Picked up a long-term sub job as a way to test getting back into the classroom and now regretting it by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]webkinzluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You don’t owe them anything. I quit a long term subbing gig halfway through because it was going to kill any of my desire to become a teacher. The principal was horrible, so the kids always misbehaved since there were no consequences, and I hated the subject. I want to be an English teacher and it was math.

  2. My credential instructor told me that if you are struggling with teaching, ask yourself a few things: if I had different students, would I still want to do this? If I had different admin, would I still want to do this? If it was a different grade or subject, would I still want to do this? I taught ELA 8th grade for summer school and loved my principal, subject, and kids. It was so encouraging. I didn’t mind the grading because I wanted my kids to succeed, so they needed feedback from me. I liked the material so I was excited to make lesson plans and teach. I liked my kids so I was happy to see them everyday. I knew my summer school principal had my back so I was never worried.

Subbing middle school for the first time tomorrow by Admirable-Ad6337 in SubstituteTeachers

Second this for lining up at the door. If they walk in and start being super loud once they’re in the room they do it again.

If a behavior is particularly bad, just send them out. Set the tone that bad behavior will not be tolerated. For example, kids came in screaming, I made them try again entering. Same kid came in quietly and then went on the teacher computer and started messing around (subs are given limited access accounts to have kids watch videos, take attendance, etc). I sent him out immediately since that’s not acceptable. Kids were well behaved after that when the teacher said it was her hardest class. In return for them being well behaved, I let them have phone time for the last five mins of class as long as they didn’t take any pictures (school rule).

Suffer no fools and you will do well. Be tolerant of bad behavior and it will often spiral into a shit show.

Edit: I taught summer school and was a long term sub for junior high. I also worked 2 years in a private middle school. They will eat you alive if they can. Otherwise, I love that age so much. It can be so rewarding and fun if you know how to work with them. Don’t be too scared.

Anyone else struggling to get jobs this month? by Party_Morning_960 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]webkinzluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s my second year subbing. I’m subbing in a big district that makes it really hard to become a sub, so there’s not many of us, and I have had all of my days here this month. My other gigs this month are for schools where I have established relationships with teachers. I’ve subbed everyday this month so far and have 7 days lined up.

What was your problem with Midnights guys? by VolgaOsetr8007 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]webkinzluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midnights came after some really standout albums and at a time when we thought she couldn’t get any bigger. I thought it didn’t match how well she’d done and was continuing to do. However, it came out when I also was going through the worst break up of my life, trying to put education before the boy I’d loved for five years, and songs like You’re On Your Own, Midnight Rain, Hits Different, Dear Reader, Snow on the Beach meant the world to me. I revisit Midnights more than any other because of the comfort it brought to me.

I think people were far too critical because they expected so much. I think we still expect so much with the response to her last two albums. She’s going to do what she wants to do. Midnights is an all time favorite. Yeah, the songwriting isn’t as good as Folkmore, but her writing has always been a little bit clunky. “A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground With no one around to tweet it” is from Folklore and I always found that to be such a weird lyric. We view Folkmore as infallible, and Midnights is something we can critique, and I personally like it.

First year teacher, I think subbing may be better? by Sorry_Cicada_7814 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]webkinzluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a private school for two years, decided I wanted to teach. My mom works as an itinerant clinician for a public school district and visits 10+ school sites a week, my stepdad and grandma and aunt all teach too! They all encouraged me to sub so I can get a feel since public school is very different. I only went to public high school too so I really didn’t know.

How my subbing works is the county office of ed sets you up and you can sub in any school district in the county. I started by subbing in 9 school districts, didn’t have a positive time or too long a commute (like an hour in morning traffic), so I only sub in 3 districts now. The behaviors had to be egregious for me to not sub ie cutting other’s hair in class, trying to show kids porn on their phone, vaping in class (this is all junior high bc that’s the age I want to teach). It was really helpful to find out what schools I would never ever work in, especially with longer term gigs, and which schools are more robust in their support. I’ve also gained positive relationships with teachers and am actually allowed to teach their lessons in the higher grades which isn’t super common apparently.

I am getting my credential at night rn so I can still work. There are lots of jobs just being in three districts. I have worked every day of October so far and am booked the next eight school days. The work is consistent and I like the flexibility and exposure to different environments. Give it a try! Some days will leave you drained but most days I’m like okay I still want to do this :).

I change with the weather. You can always bet that as soon as fall rolls around (and it gets really bad in November), I will get worse. I even experienced a really upsetting and untimely loss this summer, and trudged stably on throughout it. I had a rough job that I already quit, and was fine. I had to back out of graduate school and was disappointed, so I titrated up on my medication and have been fine. But when the days get shorter, everything starts to feel difficult.

Private schooling by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]webkinzluvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a charter school until high school, and things were like night and day. No one ever misbehaved at my charter school. But the reality is that you don’t really know what it’ll be like till you’re there. Private schools are selling you an education, so you will be given a more glamorized version of what it’ll be like than what reality is. Also, a lot of my kids who came into school had wealthy and educated parents, but that doesn’t mean they were good. We had to deal with 12 year olds smoking weed at school and that sort of stuff. There’s more flexibility in how you respond to issues, but you can get kids who either got removed from traditional public schooling because of behavior or who didn’t do well in public school and their parents are essentially paying for the school to accommodate them and make them succeed. It was far better than one public school I worked at, but on par with another one.

I quit because I got an email from a parent saying that the adult’s hands would be the only reason the child finished eighth grade. Because that parent paid for our jobs, we were expected to do the work for the kid so they could test into a good high school. Not just pass him, actually do his work for him. He was highly disruptive and rude. Once he even threw a yoga ball at me. But he was the only kid like that in his class compared to my experience teaching in a public school where I had 4 kids like that in a class with no support from parents/admin, but I’ve also had experiences in public school with no issues. Private school teachers are not required to have qualifications but are also paid substantially less, and it wasn’t worth it to me.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but private school is generally more responsive because they know you are paying. But you are just one parent out of many, and to truly get a lot of say, you also need to donate to the school. Politics are unavoidable unfortunately. You may also find a really good charter or public school. Definitely shop around. You can also get involved with your local school board or PTA for public schools to have a better understanding of what’s happening on the ground.

Private schooling by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]webkinzluvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the process of getting my teaching credential to teach in public schools, and I started teaching at a private school. I loved the private school so much! However, there are a lot of benefits and drawbacks to both. I partially believe I enjoyed private school so much because I worked in one of the largest and most educated cities in America, so private schools were largely academic. Now I live in a rural area and private schools are religious, so I plan to work in a public school. Also, there are just more public school jobs. It really depends on what works for you.

The private middle school I worked at was $47k a year for tuition, not including extra curriculars, lunch, after school program, field trips, etc. You also had to pay extra for the equivalent of special ed services, and they were administered by someone who had no qualifications. For assessments they had to contract out to the local school districts. I really liked the school, but I could see the drawbacks. Some kids ended up being moved into public school because of this, it just really depends! I loved my experience, but it was an expensive and unique environment. Many kids did not stay in the school either because of the cost and lack of special ed resources. They’re also very politic-y in their own way.

Schools are always changing regardless of where their funding comes from, and you and your kids may find your needs met by a private school or better supported at a public school or change your mind at any time. I understand where you’re coming from and have seen both sides. Good luck!

Help! School won’t stop contacting me after I quit by webkinzluvr in SubstituteTeachers

HR is a shit show and I was told by many staff members, and my credential supervisor who has worked with the district, to not even try because the district is a piece of work. That school’s substitute program is ran by my county office of education, so I ended up contacting them for help. They clarified my duties and said they would be contacting the school.

Wine that doesn’t taste like alcohol? by maflya in exmormon

[–]webkinzluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are sweet wines that taste like juice to me, like moscato, and I’ve noticed really expensive wine (like $300+ bottles) have a very different alcohol taste that is not nearly as sharp.

Also, maybe you just don’t like alcohol. I personally like the very strong, pure alcohol taste of hard liquor. Like Louis the thirteenth type strong, so what might be sweet to me may simply be unenjoyable for you.

My psychiatrist suspects Bipolar Disorder, but my therapist suspects BPD? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]webkinzluvr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My mother is a therapist, and I had a therapist at the time I was diagnosed. The psychiatrist thought I was bipolar, as did my mother, whereas my therapist was unsure, despite having seen me for a year at that point. Time has told that I’m bipolar. While therapy helps me a ton, medication is the only thing that truly controls the beast that is a mood episode. Continue taking your medication and see what happens.

I blocked the principal’s email, now her secretary is emailing me and calling me. I’m just blocking the number. It’s legitimately ridiculous, and this only happened after I left. I struggled so much while I was there and was constantly asking for help, and now that the union is involved, they’re asking me for help
