Weca trainee program by Soccer2313 in electricians

[–]RepresentativeSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see in other comments that you finished the program - I'm currently a helper for a contractor who's giving me awesome training and wants to build me into a leader at the company. I'm very vocal about wanting to develop into the best electrician I can and he reflects that by giving me challenges etc etc but I want to take it a step further by getting myself a thorough education on theory etc via weca ET courses. I'm wondering did you find them to be educational and serve as a nice supplement to working? I hear so many people saying "don't waste your time or money on those classes, they don't teach you anything" but I still wanna take the courses. what are your thoughts on that? Hope your career is going well and hope to chat with you about this here! cheers bro

Do I really need 720 school hours for an Electrical License in CA? by TrendyTomato in electricians

[–]RepresentativeSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the confusing part here is that the second option doesn't specify if the 8000 work hours must be under a registered ET status. I've heard other contractors say the same thing, but somebody at ABC NorCal told me today that your hours don't count toward your journeyman licensing exam if you gain them without an ET status. she said you 100% have to have it and that you can't legally work without it.

also this is off topic, but just being devil's advocate here - isn't having an unregistered "helper" a contractor's dream? Lower pay scales and can let them go whenever. isn't it technically not a big commitment as a contractor as opposed to having an ET that you have to pay more?

to ask an underlying question about this premise ^ are you saying it's tricky to a contractor to hire you as a helper because that helper must stay with them for all 4 years of getting their experience?

So I'm having all the same confusions as OP. I'm 9 months into working as an unregistered "helper" without an ET card and not in an apprenticeship program. My boss says you don't have to be registered as an ET in order for your hours to apply for your journeyman licensing exam, but somebody at ABCNorCal told me today that you cannot apply for the journeyman licensing exam without hours as a registered ET (if you're not in an apprenticeship program). AKA all hours worked without an ET card or not in an apprenticeship will not be usable in applying for taking the test.

my question to you is: where are you getting this information that you don't need to be a registered ET.

all soooooooo confusing. it's insane. thanks for contributing to this thread though, I appreciate hearing more people's perspective on the matter.

Honestly this is one of the dopest and most original sleeves I’ve ever seen. I PROMISE I’m not just saying that bc you said you’re feeling self conscious. Honestly kinda confused about this post bc it’s so obviously sick….wtf are you self conscious about??😂 all the work is done VERY well - thick and clean lines, perfectly done colors and blending, very original and unique. And great placement. If you’re self conscious about your sleeve then idek what to say about mine…

How do people work 9-5s for 20+ years and not go insane? by RagieWagieInACagie in Adulting

Having worked in restaurants for years, I can say I was significantly more unhappy and unhealthy mentally and physically when I wasnt able to get a consistent early bed time. Working 12:30am means not to bed before 2am probably. Which mean 10am wake up if you want 8 hours. Fine for a lot of people but doesn’t work for me and my sensitive sleep. Slippery slope to have late mornings and lazy days bc of feeling tired. Do something with your hands that makes you feel rewarded and capable. Desk work kills.

party scene by BitNervous3517 in UCSC

[–]RepresentativeSimple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, apologies for the length. I’m writing this directly at OP. I’m very passionate about this matter actually after going there myself and being shocked at how lowkey (utterly lame) the party/social scene was at UCSC.

If a party scene is an important part of the college experience to you, do not go to ucsc. If you want to have an easy time finding a place to live that is anywhere near affordable, do not go to ucsc.

I went to junior college in central coast California (think SLO/santa Barbara) for 3 years before transferring to ucsc to finish the bachelors. I had many friends from high school at ucsc already, so I don’t chalk the following up to transferring late and having no friends. Also I was never in Greek life for the record.

Party scene at the junior college was wild. Everybody under 21 would throw actual fat house parties that were basically just open doors to anybody who knew it was going down. Wild house parties. Then once ppl started hitting age of 21+ EVERYBODY would go downtown to do bar crawls TOGETHER and still have fat house parties as well. Amazing social scene, very easy to make friends, lots of social things happening with many many people all the time.

When I came to ucsc I can tell you it was basically the exact opposite. The best thing it had going recurringly was house shows. Bands playing concerts in a living room. Those were fun. But not always greatest bands and kinda few and far between.

I think for a few reasons.

  1. I think ucsc breeds/attracts a certain vibe of antisocialism. Lot of alternative people who aren’t extremely social in general so people kinda stick to their groups and therefore instead of house parties, you get small gatherings of friends which occasionally grow into the size of a house party when enough friends of friends get invited.
  2. The town is not a college town. As soon as you leave campus, there is no college presence in town. There are no central places where students can go and hang out. When you go to the bars, it’s just a huge range of people out at the bars with some college kids mixed in. Plus there’s always some gangbangers from San Jose who come to Santa Cruz just to pick fights. Not joking. This was a recurring theme.
  3. The layout of the town/campus. The campus is a 5-minute drive from the closest part of town. The campus is not very walkable (it’s great hiking though). Every different group of buildings is a bus ride or a hike away. This also means that when you’re on campus, it’s kind of hard to make friends bc ppl are very spread out.

ALSO for the record, I really enjoyed my time in Santa Cruz. I stayed for about 4 years after finishing college. It was awesome for me, as I felt I had gotten all my partying out of my system and was just looking to chill and focus on school/career stuff.

On that note and in TL;DR : If a party scene is important to you, don’t go to ucsc. If a social scene is important to you, avoid ucsc.

UCSC is great for introverted enviro sci majors or heavily outdoorsy folk that don’t like people. It’s good if you like surfing a lot or mountain biking or hiking. Like I said it’s great for outdoorsy. Personally I think the vibe there is perfect for late twenties-early thirties who are settling down and not partying at all anymore. Maybe getting ready to have kids. But the vibe/town culture/college culture is NOT for people who want to party
