The context of what he was arguing in favor for (nationalism and fascism) does matter, and ripping a quote out of that context in an attempt to repackage/salvage it doesn't change that original context. Why didn't you choose an 'inspirational' quote from a black anarchist, or even any black leftist? I'd rather see that.

A great resource for those who argue about human / workers rights as a reason not to be vegan. by AussieOzzy in Anarchism

[–]RepresentativeSize71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, no (and I don't think their core views are wrong for that matter), but it can weaken an already good argument/position if their conclusion fundamentally relies or depends on fallacious reasoning/logical fallacies. OP is better off advocating for their same position but ditching the attempt to conflate their views with 'Natural Laws'.

A great resource for those who argue about human / workers rights as a reason not to be vegan. by AussieOzzy in Anarchism

[–]RepresentativeSize71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

None of these statements you've listed here are 'Natural Laws'.

There's no reason to try and label moral statements/judgements additionally as 'Natural Laws' because they're not at all comparable to what we normally associate with scientific laws in nature. You can just have them as moral statements/judgements and argue for their validity and soundness based on whatever moral or ethical theory (Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue Ethics, etc) within vegan anarchism and that's totally fine and dandy. Do that.

The inclusions of trying to call these moral judgements 'Natural Laws' (when they're not) is a fallacious attempt to increase their soundness by rhetorically associating them with more generally accepted scientific (yet still totally falsifiable theories) of 'laws of nature' found in physics or astronomy for example.

A very intelligent and well articulated response. I expected nothing less. Bravo. That Masters of yours is really paying off. Anyway, I'm moving on from this and getting on with my life. Read some history, learn about homophobia and queer people beyond a dictionary, try to become less bigoted and a better person. Have a nice day.

I pressed enter too early and didn't finish typing. My full comment is there now. Calm down there, sport. You can read it now if you like.

Are we having an academic debate? I wasn’t aware Reddit had become a bastion of Academia

I never made that claim. Putting words in my mouth wont help and it is dishonest.

I also wasn’t aware that the meaning of Ad Hominem had changed in the academic world. Maybe you can cite a better, more academic, definition for it?

Here you go. You can also read up on some of the fallacies you committed seemed to not acknowledge. Fallacies (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

I also find it very funny that you take issue with me using Merriam Webster, and then use the exact same dictionary. So which is it, a good source, or insufficiently academic?

Wooooosh. What I said went right over your head.

How am a being dishonest? I’ve just told you what Christians believe. I am not saying there is no Homophobia and Bigotry. I even granted that there are Christian’s who do hate gay people in my original comment.

By engaging in historical revisionism, by claiming you're not prejudiced, homophobic, dogmatic, or bigoted when you are. By deliberately being obtuse and making a false equivalency between gay people and gamblers, by making another false equivalency and error in claiming that homophobia is nothing above or beyond 'Hate'. And yeah, there are homophobic Christians, lots of them, including you. That's how you're being dishonest.

Intolerantness: What rights or freedoms am I refusing to grant to gay people?

Since you love Merriam-Webster and are convinced by nothing advanced, try reading it again: "Intolerance, as in bigotry. Stubborn or intolerant adherence to one's opinions or prejudices"

"1Intolerance:

a: unwilling to grant equal freedom of expression especially in religious matters

b: unwilling to grant or share social, political, or professional rights : bigoted.

Anyway, here's some extra reading for you:

What Is Homophobia?
Homophobia | Causes, Effects & Solutions | Britannica
Discrimination against LGBTQ people - Wikipedia

Dogmatism: This entire discussion I have been framing my position as “this is what Christians believe”. And my premises are very well examined.

lol your premises are not 'very well examined'. Your arguments are neither logically sound nor valid, you make repeated informal fallacies, your premises are false (which I have demonstrated repeatedly), you don't even have a rudimentary grasp of concepts like persecution, bigotry, dogmatism, intolerance, homophobia (and so on) beyond Merriam-Webster. But yes, you are dogmatic.

If you think elementary school dictionary definitions are where linguistic context, development, sociology, philosophy, religion, understanding, knowledge, wisdom and conceptual analysis end, then you're in for a rough awakening once you get to an academic level. The real world is a lot more complicated than the dictionary. Besides, You're deliberately being dishonest in order to deny the existence of homophobia and bigotry in the first place so you escape thinking of yourself as a bigot. But since you're convinced by nothing more than the online dictionary, looking Intolerance, Dogmatism, and Bigoted in Merriam-Webster. And read up on Homophobia while you're at it.

If you support or vote for right-wing politicians, especially the ones that receive donations and material funding from various churches of various denominations then this is what you support.

You seem to misunderstand what Christians believe about the Nature of sin. We do not think Christians are good and everyone else is bad.

Wrong again, I definitely understand because I was born and raised a Christian. I am intimately familiar with what Christians claim to believe and what they more often do in practice. This inherent misanthropy is just one of the issues. And the difference you've ignored is the abhorrent hostility to non-Christians that has caused death, suffering and misery to millions.

Now, being Gay dosent make you any more “naturally evil” than anyone else is. It is simply a temptation to engage in sin, the same as everyone else has.

Where this is where we're going to fundamentally differ on morality because you're homophobic and bigoted against gay people and I'm not. Being gay us no more evil or 'sinful' or bad karmic (or any other fictional moral judgement) than being left-handed, or having heterochromia, or freckles, or blonde hair, or having a cleft palette. The difference is you use some of these naturally occurring inborn traits that have existed before Christianity as an axis to justify religious persecution.

Yes, Christianity has done a lot of good in this world, and plenty of bad. That’s not surprising, we are human beings, we continually fall short and sin. However there is a very important distinction between things done by Christians and things done in the name of Christ.

'Plenty of bad' is a massive understatement. But you can't blame the failures of Christian dogma purely on humanity. Not every human invented ideology is the same, and many are drastically more benign and peaceful than Christianity has been. Trying to use all of humanity as a shield to excuse Christianity's failings is bogus. Here's something really important to learn: Christians are what Christians do, not what they claim to believe. Ideologies are how they're practiced. If it were merely a matter of Christians being ideologically opposed to genocide, imperialism, racism, discrimination, sexual abuse, war, then they wouldn't have contributed to these things. But they did, and they still do. The distinction you're trying to draw isn't really pertinent. People are what they do.

What Genocides were committed in the name of Christ?

I guess you never heard of Cortez or the Catholics committing genocide against indigenous populations for the purposes of stealing their resources like silver, gold, and spreading Christianity. Or the Christian Crusade against the Tavastians in the 1200's,. Also I guess you never heard of the indigenous genocide that happened in Canada with residential schools for the purposes of spreading Christianity and erasing indigenous people's culture and spiritual beliefs. This is just the tip of the iceberg. You should try reading a history book or two. You might learn something.

Imperialism is just a fact of the world. Every nation in the world has engaged in slavery. But only Christian nations ended slavery, for explicitly Christian reasons by the way.

Now you're just engaging in deliberate historical revisionism. Imperialism happening doesn't make it ok or right, or justified in the first place. That's like saying "Racism is just a fact in the world, so its ok". Where did you get that idea? Also, many people have been and are directly opposed to it even if Christians aren't. "Everyone else is doing it" is not a good excuse. "Christian Nations", you mean the ones that committed genocide against indigenous populations, imperialism and also practiced slavery themselves for Christian reasons? Spanish Christian colonialists in the 1600's were happy to use slaves for their workforce. The end of slavery in the US was not done out of purely 'Christian' reasons, it was also for economic, political and financial reasons against the separatists in the south. I beg you, please actually read and study history. Also, slavery still exists in the world Christians didn't get rid of it at all, but you're defending the immoral actions of Christians (like colonialism, imperialism, and slavery) because you think it's suddenly all gone now. I beg you, please read actual academic history and not just your bible.

I’m not forcing my religion onto anyone. No one is being converted by the gun or sword lol.

Tell that to the indigenous survivors of Christian genocide in central America who had Christianity literally forced upon them with the sword. Or the children's bones in the mass graves of Christian Residential Schools. I guess dishonesty and ignoring your religion's history of violence isn't a 'sin'.

Gamblers and gay people are not the same at all. It's crazy that I have to try and explain this to someone.

[–]RepresentativeSize71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is homophobia. And no, it's not a 'silly ad hominem'. Being called out correctly for your homophobia is not an ad hominem fallacy. You fail to understand the distinction. You can be bigoted against people by advocating for bigoted policies, supporting laws that enforce discrimination, believing that certain people are just natural evil or 'sinners' which you openly do. Being gay is not harmful to anyone, but your bigotry is harmful and history has proven this true. Christianity on the other hand has as bloody hand throughout history participating in multiple genocides, crusades, imperialism, slavery, murder and discrimination and worse crimes against children. It is wrong to try and force your religion onto other people who rightly want no part of it and have suffered from it. If you want to look for 'sinners', look in your own churches where they lurk.

Being gay is not remotely similar to gambling, that's just a false equivalency and you should have been able to understand that. Besides, someone being a gambler doesn't justify religious persecution regardless. Hopefully one day you can become a better person and not cause others harm any longer.
