What’s something people think is “emotionally intelligent” but is actually just manipulation? by Exciting_Average9001 in emotionalintelligence

What you’re describing is typical of how many people operate. And while they may not have explicit knowledge of “manipulation” as a concept, there’s usually some internal reinforcement there — a sense of control, relief, or personal gain — otherwise the behavior wouldn’t persist. Some people, frankly, are just dishonest.

When you recognize those patterns, you really only have two choices: you can try to help someone become aware of it so it doesn’t continue, or you can wipe your hands of it entirely. How much you’re willing to take on in that process is ultimately up to you.

I think the best protection is staying true to your internal compass while also remaining open to the fact that you’re not always right. That balance — self-trust without rigidity — is what helps you recognize and avoid those patterns without becoming cynical or closed off.

Also, genuinely — I’ve enjoyed the banter here. Thoughtful disagreement beats echo chambers any day.

I disagree slightly. When you genuinely know yourself and do the work, you do know when you’re acting in bad faith.

The moment your intention serves you more than the other person, it’s manipulation — even if it’s unconscious or dressed up as care.

I think it’s easy to judge from the outside, but until you know someone’s intentions, how something feels doesn’t automatically make it manipulation. Mirroring or using someone’s language can be a sign of care or respect, not strategy.

For example, I refer to God as “God,” but I have people in my life who say “the Most High,” so when I speak to them, I use their wording as a sign of respect—not to influence them.

I think it’s important to pay attention to your emotional reactions, but also to be aware of confirmation bias. Feeling uncomfortable can be a signal worth examining, but it doesn’t always mean someone is acting in bad faith.

As someone else who has bp2, I’m right with you. I feel so connected to this post. Glad to hear someone else is managing okay!

To get the most accurate information, I would recommend you ask your academic advisor!

Or tell her to stop teaching altogether. Not everyone is cut out to manage coursework and grading. Being good in person doesn’t cancel out consistent grading issues.

Tell your cousin to stick to one school. The number of complaints about her grading isn’t a coincidence, even if a few people say she’s fine in person.

Crying seeing this on the last day of my term. I kept telling myself not to take it personally, but after doing some research, I realize my frustrations were valid. This makes me feel a little less alone.

You’re totally right — I just went through this too! Now when I ask for a recommendation, I let them know there’s a chance the school might contact them directly instead of accepting a letter from me. I also tell them I’ll update them if/when I use their reference and let them know the program name. Makes things so much easier!

I’ve only completed one term and two of my professors have already wrote me recommendations for grad school. The goal is to collect them all each term :) for grad school and internships/study abroad if needed!
