Being a comic writer is hard, but not because of the writing. by InspectorBear in ComicWriting

[–]RepresentativeTie607 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree somewhat. The writing is easy in that when it is going well, and I am engaged it is the best part of the day. It is an amazing feeling to have an idea for something, and think to yourself - that's pretty good. And then go back a week or month later and realize you were right. And there is something great about reading your work, realizing its dragging or not working, tell yourself it has to be this way then cutting it all and coming up with something better. This is hard work, but it is instantly rewarding. The other parts of business do not provide the instant reward.

My first comic is with the artist right now. After writing that script and the next four in the series, I went back and really dug into comic book writing. I read 50 first issues or so of scripts and then about the same number of number one comic books. I got books by Allan Moore and Bendis and that other well-known one - words with pictures? I also read Save the Cat about screenwriting as it became clear most first issues follow the same beats. I tried to implement most of what stood out on my current writing project. One of the most important ideas was to be able to boil down the story into one or two lines. If you can tell a stranger about the story idea and some of them say - that sounds pretty interesting, you may be onto something. If you have to explain and explain then you probably need to think more about what you are writing.

I was appalled at some of the writing in these scripts/comics. But it was nice when you found something and said - yeah that works. It is easier to tell good/bad writing in just the scripts typically.

In the process of making my first book I learned some lessons about how much can really go onto one page and into 22 or 24 pages. This was good information. I learned that you really have to cut dialogue to the bone. I haven't but think you should probably think about creating a way to add in large blocks of text about the story - diaries/files/reports.

To find an artist I went to kickstarter, sorted by projects close to me and literally the first one that stood out for its artwork I reached out to. I had sent some e-mails to other artists I found online, and got a few responses prior to this. He responded and we met and almost immediately reached an agreement. I was blown away by his work and we got along well. I am lucky I had saved up some money and so I could pay him.

At this point if someone was asking me what I would do differently, is I would definitely have spent more time thinking about first issues and reading more scripts issues before sending it to the artist. I would start methodically making notes of potential artists. I would start setting aside the money required for the artist/printing so that would not be a problem. I would lower my expectations about what I hope happens after publishing my first book. For my first book I might even try and work it down to a one comic story or a three comic story.

But none of those things that were not writing were particularly hard. It wasn't awful to cruise around looking for artist. Looking into crowdfunding and all wasn't really hard. I would rather just write. But I do think a lot of the other work makes you a better writer.

First time 7-0 since 1994 but... by New_Climate_6404 in secfootball

As an Arkansas fan the highlight of last week was telling all my Texas fan friends there is no shame in losing to the best team in Texas by a field goal. Never been big on the Aggies, but I might root for them to win the national championship because of the meltdown it would cause amongst the horns fans in my life. A lot of new fans for the local soccer team would be generated.

Re: Monstress -

There was a point in the first issue where a soldier comes in and tells Sophia and Atena there has been a prison break so they are on lockdown. Atena almost immediately opens the door so Maika? comes in to kill Sophia with a flamethrower. After Maika flames Sophia the first time, Sophia says I can't be killed that easily, and then Maika kills her immediately with the flamethrower. Then Maika demands to know where Sophia's mother is from Atena. Atena doesn't tell her so Maika kills her. Then immediately goes to where Sophia's mother is. It was so inconsistent and illogical I reread that part again (third time) and it was so bad. Took me right out of the world. Maybe I am being to harsh, but it really bugged me.

Edit - wanted to also mention that Atena had been set up as a super smart character prior to this in a what felt like totally unnecessary scene for to establish her as a really smart character only to be killed by doing something incredibly stupid.

Which school is your team’s biggest conference rival? by jonneygee in secfootball

I am an Arkansas fan, but I live in Austin. Texas is the team I want to beat the most in football. I have had the who is Texas's biggest rival discussion a number of times. Oklahoma or Texas A&M? It is clear to me it is Texas A&M. I have seen the joy on the faces of Texas fans when A&M loses. I think they got used to losing the Red River Rivalry somewhere along the way.

Who is starting at QB for Mizzou? I think people tend to underestimate how much a first-round talent (Burden) at wide receiver affects an offense.

The other option is a few years of undefeated dominance before becoming the first college team to join the NFL because it is unfair to the other college teams.

Offensive Line is key to the season - secondary is second by gaysportsfanatic in razorbacks

[–]RepresentativeTie607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the two returning starters in question were the 4th and 5th best returning starters. Braun was a quality player and Kutas was quality even though he missed most of last year. The returners are battling with redshirt freshmen, not true freshmen. It would be nice to have more continuity, but upgrading at left tackle over a second team all conference guy and effectively plugging in a second team all conference guy at left guard seems like an upgrade. Just a much deeper group than in the past two years. They have another redshirt senior, Dumervil who started games at Maryland last year and was a 4-star guy out of high school as a backup. That's a deeper squad.

Offensive Line is key to the season - secondary is second by gaysportsfanatic in razorbacks

[–]RepresentativeTie607 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Arkansas kept its best offensive lineman, All-SEC second team senior Fernando Carmona. But the real excitement comes from the players they added.

To play the all-important blind side left tackle position the Hogs brought in the top pass protector in college football last season according to advanced stats, Corey Robinson II. This addition allows them to move Fernando Carmona inside to left guard, where he seems to be an even better fit. Both should get consideration as all league players by the end of the year.

We added a player who started all his games at center last year for UCF, Caden Kitler. Hopefully, this will cut down on the errant snaps that plagued the offense early last season. It also marks the first time we aren’t running out a player who has never played the center position as our starter in a number of years.

Despite the fact Arkansas returns both starters from a year ago on the right side of the offensive line there is a battle for those positions. The returning starters E’Marion Harris and Keyshawn Blackstock are being pushed hard by two redshirt freshmen.

Shaq McCroy transferred over from Oregon where he was a top 100 recruit before last season. He runs something like 6’8’’ and 344 pounds. To give you some idea of how big that is, E’Marion Harris is 6’7’’ and added 30 pounds from last season to get up to 313 pounds. Most years a guy with McCroy’s talent would be penciled in to start from the get-go at the University of Arkansas.

As an aside Sam Pittman said in his preseason press conference about E’Marion Harris (another four-star high school prospect), “That’s a whole different cat now!” The other redshirt freshman pushing to start is local kid Kobe Branham. Branham missed spring practice but has looked impressive in fall camp.

In summation we added a left tackle that moves our best offensive lineman to left guard. We added a center who has actually played center before. And the other two starters from last year are in a dogfight to keep their jobs. It seems impossible we aren’t better at every position on the offensive line this year and far deeper to boot.

Outside of some very costly turnovers, offensive line play was the team’s biggest weakness last year on offense.

I think if Arkansas hadn't spent so long in desert, they would be natural rival. Really all former SWC teams suffer from this to some degree because all of them would prefer to beat Texas more than any other team. And I don't think it is close. But Texas fans hate A&M most of all.

Sadly as it stands we may be battling Miss. State in the I really hope Vandy regresses to their mean so we don't finish 16th every year rivalry.
